A pregnant woman committed suicide after killing her children in Islamkot town in Tharparkar district, Sindh, when she reportedly jumped into a well along with her two children, thus resulting in the death of all three.

Initial reports suggested that Sabhri Dohat, 35, resident of Onyaro village near Islamkot town, threw her eight-year-old son Amir Hassan and three-year-old daughter Kali in the well before jumping herself.

Later the villagers took out the three bodies from the well. The bodies were brought to rural health centre Islamkot, from where they were handed over to their relatives.

According to the villagers, the reason behind this extreme step taken by Ms Dohat, who was pregnant at the time of her death, could be some domestic issues and extreme poverty.

No police report had been registered till the filing of this story.

It is pertinent to mention that during the past four years of droughts in Thar, more that 300 people have reportedly committed suicide.

A local activist Ali Akbar Rahimoon told Dawn that in most cases the victims threw themselves in the wells adding he feared that trend was on the rise in arid zone of the country mainly due to incurring droughts.

“The main reasons behind such extreme steps were poverty, hunger and domestic feuds,” he said. He lamented that mostly such incidents went without any probe or investigation by police.

Commenting on this, SSP Tharparkar Sarfaraz Nawaz Shaikh was of the opinion that the heirs of the victims avoid to register such cases.

“However, I have directed SHOs of all areas to register the FIRs of such incidents,” he added.

The chief executive officer of Health and Nutrition Development Society (Hands), Dr Shaikh Tanweer Ahmed, highlighted the need to focus on the health and nutrition issues.

According to him, such issues are becoming the major cause of “mental disorders and other problems among the inhabitants of the desert”.

Dr Tanweer urged the concerned functionaries of Sindh government to focus on the basic issues of the vulnerable region to avoid such incidents and the unabated deaths of the kids.

Would that I never read this news :(
I wish it never happened....how a mother commits suicide with her kids ..
When poor will realise that instead of throwing up their lives like that if they get some courage and take at least one corrupt guy with them, the situation will start to get better in days.

Govt should look Tharparkar region seriously these people are the most unfortunate ones in Pakistan no water no livestock no jobs nothing.
Feeling sad.:(

results of over population..best welfare one can do for poor is give them birth control..and infact no welfare trust is doing that for them..instead everyone is keen on cash and material donations to hand over to poor...benazir income support scheme must be made conditional to birth control and family size limitation...

Suicide is haram, but at least she was protected by nuclear weapons from enemy invasion. Other countries will be expected to provide more aid for such social requirements, while Pakistan spends its own money on ever-expanding debt servicing and more military capabilities. Talk about misplaced national priorities!

Wow!! PPP is party of assholes and bastards!!

Kal bhi bhutto kutta tha ajj bhi bhutto kutta hai!

Are you for real?

That is what happens when your priorities regarding your countrymen are not right.
When you have a food and water security crisis in certain parts of your country/ provinces. When your healthcare strategies are a continuous streak of failures. When your educational system is nourishing the divides among your nation. When you actually think as a businessman and not as a leader of the nation. When you siphon the budget money of one area to another as a strategy to strengthen your vote bank. When you keep on building cancer hospitals in every province to capture the big money when the maternal and child health is one of the most neglected areas and needed an urgent attention and your countrymen keep on dying due to accidents and trauma because they can't get an adequate care due to lack of trauma care centers.

Unfortunate is the word that you should be prepared to use on a regular basis for this nation.
For them to pay you the taxes and for you to "enjoy it", you have to keep them alive.
At times, the insensitivity gets to become so prominent that one feels like that it's a dirty population control ploy that is in action here.

What's more, when everybody insists on keeping the present course with the same misguided priorities, it only makes it even worse.

When you have a food and water security crisis in certain parts of your country/ provinces. When your healthcare strategies are a continuous streak of failures. When your educational system is nourishing the divides among your nation.

That is all very painful to see for those who still care.

When even Ghari Khuda Bakhsh still does not have a pukka road so that jiyalas can reach easily for offering prayers at Bhutto's and Benazir's graves what do you expect people in Tharparkar to do when even breathing becomes a burden.

Is it possible to submit a case, and get the supreme court to dismiss PPP govt over negligence?

The fact that 300 people have committed suicide in Thar alone should be proof enough that the Sindh government has done nothing to alleviate the conditions of those in extreme poverty.

How long before we blame Hindia and JewSA for this too?
