ISLAMABAD – The Saudi Arabian ambassador Abdul Aziz Al-Ghadeer had revealed in an interview that his Kingdom had given bigger amounts to Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) led government in Pakistan as compared to the recent gift of $ 1.5 billion.
Ghadeer was giving the interview to an English daily when he made the revelation.
He criticized the condemnation of political parties in the Pakistan over Saudi gift to Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) led government.
Categorically stating that his Kingdom has no favorites in Pakistan (in terms of political parties), Ghadeer described that during Crown Prince Salman bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud’s visit to Islamabad Saudi Arabia donated $ 1.5 billion with the condition that the source of donation should not be identified.
“We stand with the people of Pakistan and have worked with all governments. Saudi government had given bigger amounts to the PPP government during its five-year tenure,” he added.
Ghadeer wondered why there was no criticism of the Saudi money in past. He asked Pakistan’s political parties to cooperate with each other instead of becoming rivals.
On March 19, PakistanTribe reported that the federal finance minister and leader of PML-N Ishaq Dar asked those who were criticizing the government for receiving $ 1.5 billion from Saudi Arabia to feel ashamed as it was not something happened for the first time.
Pakistan had received $ 1.5 billion from Saudi Arabia earlier in March 2014. Government officials were giving contradicting statements ever since. Federal information minister Pervez Rasheed and adviser to Prime Minister on foreign affairs Sartaj Aziz maintained a stance that Saudi’s fund was nothing but a gift for the people of Pakistan.
President of Pakistan Mamnoon Hussain, however, said that due to high chances of international pressure on Pakistan, the terms and conditions of this funding could not be made public.
