LAHORE – Although uncertain about on-time polls, major political parties of the country have started electioneering in Punjab, where law and order situation seem to be relatively better.
The PML-Q, which has its top leader in the position of deputy prime minister, held public meetings as a starter to prepare itself for a real election drive in Chakwal, Sambrial, Vehari, Narowal and party’s high command home town Gujrat.
The PML-Q leadership under the command of deputy premier, Chaudhary Pervaiz Elahi after completing preliminary election exercise in the potential constituencies of North and Central Punjab, would hold public meetings in South Punjab in the next round. The PML-Q, despite its ongoing talks with the PPP over seat adjustments, is issuing party tickets and directing the nominated candidates to start campaigns.
The PML-N, overly feels comfortable in Punjab, has invited applications from the aspirants of party tickets for the general elections, however the major focus of the PML-N is Sindh as the ruling party of Punjab with the cooperation of some individual political figures, PML-F and nationalist parties desire to defeat the PPP on its home ground to form a coalition government in Sindh. However, the PML-N chairman also held public gatherings in Punjab.
The PML-N chief had made marathon rounds of Sindh recently and held meetings Nawabshah, Sukkur, Larkana, Dadu and Hyderabad and would take up more tours of the Sindh soon.
The PTI, which has serious doubts about the on-time conduct of the general polls, also started preliminary election campaign to keep the party at par with its major opponent the PML-N.
Imran Khan, PTI chairman in a round of Punjab held public meetings in Chakwal, Attock, Toba Tek Singh, Faisalabad and Lodharan. While, Imran Khan seems to be the first political leader who would start round of the volatile province of Khyber Pukhtunkhawa as part of its starter election drive from Peshawar on March 3.
Despite all the PTI efforts to muster support for the general polls, it has not announced a time frame to start the process of inviting applications from the party men aspiring to get the party tickets.
The PTI leaders said that they hoped that parliamentary boards at centre and provinces would be formed in phases by the first half of the March to invite applications for party tickets to give a free hand to the party candidates to kick start election drive.
The MQM, which desires to establish its foothold in Punjab has divided the province in Central and South Punjab focusing the general elections and held around five public meetings at the central and southern party offices, which were addressed by MQM chief, Altaf Hussain.
The MQM, however is focusing more on the South Punjab as it has small support pockets in Multan, Bahawalnagar, Bahawalpur and Lodharan comprising settlers’ community in the urban centres of the mentioned cities.
Fazl convenes meeting: Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman has called a meeting of General Council on February 23 (Saturday) at Jamia Madnia Lahore to review preparations for forthcoming general elections. The meeting will conclude on February 24.
JUI-F Information Secretary Maulana Amjad Khan said that participants would review prevailing political situation and devise strategy for next general elections. He said that all provincial presidents will present their reports. He said that the decisions regarding election campaign and seat adjustment with other like minded parties would be taken. He said that delay in polls would push the country toward chaos. He said that the JUI-F would not leave the field open for secular parties and would fully participate in the elections.
