The main opposition party could support an amendment bill in the National Assembly that seeks to lift restrictions on lawmakers with dual nationalities – but with strings attached, sources told The Express Tribune.

The issue of lawmakers’ dual nationality – the latest bone of contention between parliament and the Supreme Court – has not only created unrest among the treasury benches, but in the opposition as well, forcing the two to work together to resolve the issue.

The Supreme Court is currently hearing a petition which seeks to disqualify those lawmakers who hold dual nationalities. The apex court has so far suspended the membership of former interior minister Rehman Malik, and PPP’s Farahnaz Isphahani and Chaudhry Zahid Iqbal.

According to sources, PPP’s chief whip Syed Khurshid Shah approached the senior leadership of the PML-N to seek their support for moving the amendment, which could accommodate lawmakers currently facing trial over their dual nationalities.

The sources said that, in the first meeting, the PML-N refused to support such a move. However, following the second meeting, it decided to link its support for the bill with negotiations for a larger package that would include issues such as the appointment of the chief election commissioner, appointment of care-taker setups in the centre as well as in the provinces.

When contacted, PML-N’s Central Joint Secretary Engineer Khurram Dastgir Khan told The Express Tribune that the time to make long lasting amendments in the Constitution has passed. He added that, if the government moves a bill alone, the PML-N would definitely oppose it.
PML-N’s dual nationals

According to sources in the PML-N, the party is reluctant to support the bill since it believes that it would be seen as a hurdle in the way of the implementation of rule of law by the Supreme Court. On the other hand, not supporting the bill would create problems within the party, too.

According to sources, the PML-N has around 28 MPAs and 23 MNAs who hold dual nationalities. However, only a few have been summoned by the court.

The dual national lawmakers are said to have approached Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif to convey fears of being disqualified and were assured that their reservations would be conveyed to PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif. Sources said some party members also met Nawaz, who advised those whose names have surfaced to contest their cases before court, while those whose names have not been disclosed to remain quiet till further directions.
Amendment

Sources in the PPP said that the party, with the support of its allies, has prepared a draft of the proposed amendment in the Constitution to protect dual nationality holders.

According to details, the draft has been sent to PML-N’s senior lawmakers. An amendment has been proposed in Article 63(1)(C), which says that a person shall be disqualified from holding membership of parliament, if “he ceases to be a citizen of Pakistan, or acquires the citizenship of a foreign State”.

On the other hand, the PML-N’s think tanks are contemplating whether or not to oppose the bill, since it may face a backlash from overseas Pakistanis.

Long live democracy and Western nations whose passports they all hold.

Asliyat samnay arahi hai!!!

IMO, this bill should never be allowed to come into existence as a amendment.

Because by this, we would allow foreign nationals to rule over us like Kings.

im sure they will stand with their partners this time too... When comes in power PTI will re-amend this.

:lol::lol:
Only Khwaja Asif and Anusha Rehman were summoned by the courts and it took just one hearing for SC to decide that both just have one Nationality and that is Pakistani

are foreign lotereys are part of PPP, PMLN has no interest in passing that bill...talk about it when this happens

Its not a matter, of opposition to anyone!
Its clear even IMran is ready to accept that, with his 80% financial supporters who all are dual national pakistanis, he shouldn't be saying no? After all his sons are dual nationals!
Also its the very bad habbit of our. Uneducated Nation who follows every non, issue. With JAZBAT.
Pmln or ppp or pti all are same page on the issue, its the dam judiciary playing. Black jack on every political issue in pakistan, trying to discredit politicians, democratic system every thn & now!
I think pmln should go ahead , with it & approve it, just try to check other side of the coin.
Its good to have dual nationals in our , assemblies at least, to get international ideas & international demands from our society, also its very helpfull, to understand the international & stratigical atmosphere around us.
If we feel fear, our national security thn , we can ban them,to become our president, primeminster, fedrl minsters, governers , chief minsters & from all the sensetive posts.
Khwaja asif , is verstyle politician , with ver cool & educated mind , no matter in which party he stands today, certnly pakistan needs him in our parliment.

WTH, if they are threaten in Pakistan (so they can run away to US any times) then why the hell they even need to b a Leader of Pakistan? Lead pakistan, correct this security system so not a single pakistan should think about dual passport (& single nationality holder dont think they are left alone by their leaders). And that will not happen if this Constitution Point is not implemented for all politicians.

I am in favor of single nationality holder leader. So in favor of the bill.

.

PML-N has 28 MPAs and 23 MNAs dual nationals. In today's core committee meeting President Zardari was briefed PML-N wants to negotiate. @akchishti journo

that is actually typical of PMLN ... who doesnot know about the noorkushti between ppp and pmln ?

so far they have been riding on samjhota express quite smoothly- no wonder be it corruption or common interested the two corrupt and incompetent parties will continue to back each other.

and I am quite sure they will continue to do so- and even in this case if PMLN doesnot want, the number of members having dual nationality may independently vote in favour of the bill.

who is NawazSharif to control them from Germany?

Can someone please mind telling me what is pti's stance on this issue???? i'm not aware of their stance on this issue... btw they also have few dual nationality holder in their ranks holding top positions in their party ranks.....
