PLA's Type 052D destroyers can beat Vietnam's Su-22s: report
Staff Reporter 2015-04-23 15:06 (GMT+8)

China's Type 052D guided-missile destroyers have the capability to intercept and shoot down the the People's Air Force of Vietnam's Su-22 fighter bombers should a future conflict between two nations over the disputed South China Sea take place, according to the Beijing-based Sina Military Network on Apr. 20.

The former Soviet Union provided 180 MiG-21bis fighters, 40 Su-22M3 ground attackers and six Su-22U trainers to the People's Air Force of Vietnam in late 1979 to replace its obsolete A-37 attackers and F-5E fighters captured from the South Vietnamese Air Force at the end of the Vietnam War. Later, Vietnam received an additional 32 Su-22M4 ground attackers and four Su-22UM3 trainers in 1988. They were once considered the most dangerous threat to Chinese ground forces in the border region between the two countries.

During the Johnson South Reef Skirmish in the South China Sea in 1988, the Su-22M3 and Su-22M4 were not deployed against the vessels of the People's Liberation Army Navy, though Chinese sailors were warned about the aircraft. Flightglobal, an online news and information website related to the aviation and aerospace industries, said Vietnam currently has 38 various types of Su-22 in services. More than 50 of them are in storage.

With an attacking range of 500 kilometers, Vietnam's Su-22s are capable of operating over the disputed Paracel and Spratly islands. Vietnam introduced a total number of 24 advanced Su-30MK2V fighter bombers from Russia to replace the obsolete Su-22 in recent years. Yet this number is not enough for Vietnam to decommission all of its Su-22s. In a future confrontation between China and Vietnam over the South China Sea, the Su-22 attackers are unlikely to survive an attack from the PLA's modern destroyers, the report said.

Strange logic and comparison. Su-22 or any other plane could be shot down by ship-based anti-airplane missiles that does not depend on the size of the ship.

I never hear anything like this "an attack from a destroyer to a supersonic fighter".
If you want to dig more on this, refer what Vietnamese pilots training everyday "fly at sea level altitude" and launch attacks at distance 50-120km.

The ship size decides the SAM size they could bring, the radar decides how far they ship could detect incoming target.
Small ship can't bring helicopter.

Su-22 are obsolete. It is long known they cannot survive type 52D air defense.

An interesting situation.

Anything in China's military inventory is invincible, no matter where and what the source.

The moment it is discovered in someone else's inventory, it becomes totally vulnerable and not fit for military deployment.

You shall go YouTube and check out HJ-8 ATGM or FN-6 or M-99 Chinese heavier gun video. The rebel all praise of Chinese weapon and their effectiveness in the name of Allah before you come back with these statement again.

I really am not concerned about the details. I am pointing out a constant factor in these posts.

And what is effectiveness in the name of Allah doing here?

When i saw thread Title, I thought there is Naval flotilla with that name.... I am just surprised with the comparison. .. every Surface flotilla consists SAM network. ... But intercepting an Jet with destroyer is new thing for me.... @Penguin ...

U forget CIWS to defense missile incoming ... and usually there's a 052C/D+054A tast fleet not a single 052D alone.

Vietnam has not only 6 fighters. Don't forget our submarines.
CIWS can shoot a single coming missile with low chance to intercept it. That's all

As you should mention that Vietnam never shoot a single missile if we want to sink your destroyer.
That's why our Molniya has 16x KH-35UE and always travel in couple ; Bal-E system has 32x KH-35UE and our 6 fighters would shoot 12x AShMs.
====================================
Tell me how far a 052D could detect some couples of fighters fly at low altitude, ie 500m above sea level?
If harmful foreign fleet is 400 kilometers from our coast, it takes 15 mins for our Su-22 to approach the attack position 100+ km away from the fleet, speed at low altitude, 1,400km/h

Good morning !!! Zhanjiang

Will China going to give PN these:
2 Type_052_destroyer (Type 052 destroyer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
1 Type_051B_destroyer (Type 051B destroyer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
2 Type_052B_destroyer (Type 052B destroyer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
For Gwadar

Or it will be like:
10 Type 053H3 frigate - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
4 Type 053H2G frigate - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
with upgrade kits
As these are potent platforms with upgrades as single OHP which Pakistan has doesn't have any good potential in it.

As PN F-22P has no future coming a head and good possibility is that it should be sold at a good cost to Algeria which already owns 4 of these similar types.

The one Type-051B DDG and two Type-052B you mentioned (as well as four Type-956) are now being refitted in shipyards under a modernization program. The two Type-052 DDG you mentioned (as well as two Type-051C, six Type-052C) are next to be refitted.

Note sure about any refitting programs of Type-053 series yet.

About transfer of these DDG/FFG to PN, no report yet. I think it's an idea worth exploring.

So there is only a good chance of Type-053 series which I think PN might not opt as we have F-22P which is an improved version of it and new too.

But If China give this for Free:

10 Type 053H3 frigate - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
4 Type 053H2G frigate - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

then PN might pay for the upgrades as this will allow the PN to integrate latest VLS based missiles and other sub systems which are not present on the current F-22Ps and also will allow them to give back the OHPs to US or may be to Turkey or Bahrain with US permission.
