In a brief report published by the Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad, a Pakistani-government-funded think tank, more details of Pakistan's new Chinese submarines have been disclosed. The report also assesses Pakistan's pursuit of developing nuclear submarine and desire to acquire ASW capability.

Excerpts:

To counter Indian naval buildup, Pakistan agreed to purchase eight new submarines
from China in March 2015, which will be equipped with a Stirling-cycle Air-independent propulsion (AIP)
system and will be able to carry up to three nuclear warhead-carrying CJ-10K land attack cruise missiles
(LACMs) each.

It has been assessed that Pakistan’s nuclear submarine is likely to be based on the Qing
Class Chinese SSK (diesel-electric submarine). Highly advanced electric propulsion system of Qing Class
Chinese SSK will enable Pakistan to replace diesel engine power generation with a nuclear power plant.

In 2014-2015, Pakistan signed an agreement with a German firm “Rheinland Air Service (RAS)” to
upgrade two Pakistan Navy-regional air transport (ATR-72s) into maritime patrol aircraft (MPA) with
anti-submarine warfare (ASW) capabilities. According to the Ministry of Defence Production, these ATR-
72s will be ready for Pakistan by 2017-2018. Furthermore, it is possible that a third ATR-72 will
ultimately be sent for conversion, especially since the platform is considered a key part of the Navy’s
Aviation Vision 2030 plan.

This report indicates Pakistan will acquire nuclear submarines by replacing diesel engine power generation with a miniaturized nuclear power plant. This is exactly what is being developed under Project KPC-3.

No. of Chinese submarines (to be procured) was increased from six to eight. I believe two may be converted into nuclear-powered subs..

According to the Indian folks nothing in Pak occurs beyond their knowledge. And, if they can't ceritify Pak can't develop reactors. I think they thought in the same frequency for the IRS (US taxation service) scams too. But they might have conveniently forgotten that only 14K (10K civil + 4K military) British officers ruled over 300m intelligent Mr. Indians for over ~200 years without blink of an eye...

I think it is already rumored that last two of the 8 won't be type 039 subs but would be of different class.

If last two are from a different class, then they are certainly Qing's. Qing being the world's largest conventional submarine can be converted into a nuclear one. By the time these Chinese submarines are ready for PN service (after 7-12 years), the development of a miniaturized nuclear power plant by Pakistan would be complete. :pakistan:

This will give Pakistan at least a 2nd strike capability as well and go a long way in strengthening our strategic defenses.

Bro, don't take them seriously. They make a lot of delusional, ridiculous and outlandish claims. These guys claimed that Pakistan would NEVER EVER become a nuclear weapons state with or without Chinese assistance. One of them also stated that india is far more advanced and developed than China. And that they have a more advanced space program than NASA.

Pakistan WILL become a strong and powerful nation no matter what our enemies say or what their fantasies maybe.

Yup seems like it. Now the timeline of these subs makes even more sense.

there about the same size . i thought the a90b dont have torpeado tubes big enough to launch the babur.
as for the cj-10k vs babur. it would be cheaper to buy an slcm than develop your own, but that contradicts that some well informed users here have said the babur slcm has been tested. as for range, pakistan being the country that it is, im sure you wont have too much difficulty squeezing range out of it. wont be surprised if the current range of the babur is 1000km+
