National Games end amid colourful closing ceremony


PESHAWAR: The Pakistan Army continued to rule the roost by lifting the winners trophy for 24th consecutive occasion, Wapda claimed the runners-up title while hosts Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were awarded the fair-play trophy as the 31st National Games ended peacefully with a colourful ceremony here at the Qayyum Sports Complex on Friday.

Featuring around 7,000 athletes and officials from across the country, an impressive closing ceremony brought the biggest national sporting gala to an end with Pakistan Army clinching the overall first position securing 4,276 points.

Wapda (3,599 points) obtained the second position overall in the week-long extravaganza while the third spot went to Pakistan Navy with 1,239 points.

In all, the Pakistan Army grabbed 219 medals, including 110 gold, 74 silver and 35 bronze medals, followed by Wapda with 201 medals (87 gold, 56 silver and 58 bronze) and Pakistan Navy with 47 medals (11 gold, 18 silver and 18 bronze).

The closing ceremony was graced by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Amir Haider Khan Hoti. Those who were also present at the occasion included KP Information Minister Mian Iftikhar Hussain, Sports Minister and chairman of the organising committee Syed Aaqil Shah, President of the Pakistan Olympic Association (POA) Lt Gen (r) Syed Arif Hassan and representatives of different national sports federations and those belonging to the KP Olympic Association.

The participating contingents from Army, PAF, AJK, Balochistan, Fata, Islamabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Navy, Police, HEC, Punjab, Pakistan Railways and Wapda assembled at the ceremony after its formal inauguration.

Amir Haider Khan, the chief guest, announced the closing of the Games amid a tremendous display of fireworks. The chief guest gave the Quaid-i-Azam Trophy to Army, the overall winners.

Army’s Kiran Khan, the South Asian Games silver medallist, was declared the best swimmer and was awarded a special trophy. Kiran created a new national individual record by clinching 13 golds at the Games, bettering her previous tally of 10 golds.

Wapda’s Maryam Babar, who improved her record in triple jump (from 11.53 to 11.66), also received a special prize.

Wapda lifted both men and women’s trophies in judo.

In the women’s events, Wapda ended at the top with 96 points which they captured by virtue of five gold and two silver medals while Army finished second (79 points) with three gold, two silver and two bronze medals. Punjab ended third with 50 points (three silver and three bronze medals).

In men’s event, Wapda topped with 111 points which they secured after winning seven gold and one bronze medal, followed by Army (60 points, two gold, one silver and three bronze) and Railways (56 points, one gold, three silver and two bronze).

Meanwhile, Army also sealed the overall trophy in the boxing event with 100 points (five gold, two silver and one bronze), Wapda emerged as runners-up with 70 points (three gold, one silver and three bronze).

Navy secured the third spot (45 points, three silver and three bronze medals).

Sindh’s Aamir Khan (64kg) was declared the best boxer.

In Mardan, Army won the baseball gold with an 11-9 victory over Wapda. Police claimed the bronze.

Wapda, meanwhile, captured the volleyball gold beating the PAF 25-17, 25-18 and 25-13 in their last league encounter. Navy received the bronze.

Earlier, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa finished fifth after they recorded an upset win against defending champions Police 3-0 (25-23, 25-18 and 25-21) in their last group match at the PSB Coaching Centre. With this loss, Police finished last in the six-team contest.

In the women’s table tennis, Ayesha of Wapda lifted the singles gold beating her team-mate Louiza Irshad 4-3 in the final while the pair of Salim Abbas and Yousuf Raja from Wapda won the men’s doubles final overwhelming Asim Munir and Faryal 3-0 (11-4, 11-9 and 11-7).

Wapda also claimed gold medals in the men’s doubles and mixed doubles events.

Army also dominated the swimming events with 445 points (16 gold, 13 silvers and four bronze medals). Wapda (200 points, one gold, four silver and 11 bronze) clinched the second position while Navy (77 points, one silver, 2 bronze) third.

These teams were followed by the HEC (74 points, two gold, one silver, one bronze) and Sindh (one bronze, 21 points) while Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan and Islamabad ended without any medal.—APP
 
Allah ka shokar hai, no unpleasant event took place, otherwise events like these are easy targets.
