Brands That Made 2016 Better

A round up of brands and designers that stood out for the better.

2016 has been a pretty awful year and it’s not quite over just yet. It’s been a year characterised morbidly by death. From favourite gorillas to rock stars, the year seems to have taken more than it gave back. However, not everything coming out of 2016 has been a total disaster. We discovered some new brands that made the year a little more bearable, at least style wise. Here’s our round up of brands and designers that stood out for the better.

Odd and Eve

2015 and 2016 saw a profusion of new footwear brands specialising in hand made shoes while reviving traditional craft. Our favourite to emerge though has to be Odd and Eve, an Instagram and Facebook based business that sells the dreamiest, hand painted Peshawari chappals. While the open toed footwear might be a bit inappropriate for cold climes, the Odd and Eve slipper is the perfect accessory for summer when you can pair it with eastern or western wear for a unique look. We’re particularly bowled over by the attention to detail on their designs.

Esfir

175255_1_031625_mag.jpg

This Karachi based jewellery brand has our heart. From its bird cage earrings that practically every starlet and fashionista wore to its latest collection of fashion forward baubles, Esfir carved a space for itself in our sartorial memorandum. Whether we wanted something traditional with a contemporary update or trendy interpretations of accessories that were the global rage, we could count on Esfir to find what we were looking for.

Karachi Candle Company

175255_2_031625_mag.jpg

We could wax on (pun intended) and on about what makes this brand great. Not only is this local brand a dupe for more expensive candle brands that we tend to import it also only costs a fraction of the price. Though they only stock in Karachi at Ensemble, the brand offers delivery all across Pakistan. Our favourites from KCC include a cucumber and melon scented candle that seems to encapsulate summer in a jar and a jasmine and lotus candle that brings balmy nights into your bedroom with its heady fragrance. The candles are super scented and tend to last forever.

Aura Crafts

175255_3_031625_mag.jpg

We’ve never shied away from admitting that we’re total beauty junkies. Cosmetics, skin care, hair care; you name it and we’re obsessed. It only makes sense then to have a beauty brand on the list. Aura, a Lahore based organic beauty brand, offers naturally enriched beauty solutions for everything ranging from anti-ageing to glowing skin. We can’t live without their activated charcoal soap which keeps our skin clean without stripping it of essential oils.

Blood Orange

175255_4_031625_mag.jpg

We’re definitely glad to see pajamas being relegated back to nightwear but in all honesty we’re quite glad they became all the rage because it gave us one of our favourite sleepwear brands of the year. From Blood Orange’s slinky silk pajamas to their cosy new velvet editions in celebration of winter we love their nightwear so much we’re guilty of wearing it to work and even toothed airport.

LAHORE: Much like many other collections being churned out by Pakistani designers these days, Erum Khan’s latest luxury couture ensembles are inspired by all things royal. Nawabzaadi – Khan’s line for Bridal Couture Week (BCW) 2016 – exhibits a contemporary grandeur and is reminiscent of the Mughal culture, with warm colours and heavy embroidery.

4-1483085442.jpg

Tapered tops with sharara pants, floor-length jackets, belts and what can only be described as full-on-full skirts, complete the collection. Overall Nawabzaadi explores a new aesthetic for brides, such as a dupatta draped on one shoulder and a choli peeping out from underneath, consciously.

In fact, the different fabrics used have been displayed via deliberate draping, which is the prime focus of the collection. Nevertheless, it’s the craftsmanship that is its highlight, along with the designs of the embroidery. Gotta, marrori, succha, tilla, mirror and coin works add an extra, traditional touch to the ensembles.

LAHORE: Designer Shiza Hassan’s latest collection is a veritable ode to the craftsmanship of the Persians. It draws inspiration from one of their most notable art forms: carpet weaving. The practice – now nearly 2,000 years old – reached its peak in Iran during the Safvaid Era and has stood the test of time.

Hassan’s ‘The Silken Bride’ focuses on various elements of carpet weaving. Iconic shikargahs, the tree of life and geometrical patterns serve as the underlying stories of the designer’s ensembles.

There is an abundance of motifs depicting hunting scenes, vases, arches, medallions and Persian architecture, along with vine interlacement – all paying homage to different cultures, tribes and artists of the empire.

“I wanted to portray beauty by developing a thematic series with The Silken Bride. The entire collection represents my personal desire to step out of my comfort zone and evolve,” Hassan told The Express Tribune. “The clothes are as much contemporary as they are historical. I’ve worked with clean cuts, fused, traditional and oriental details to create pieces that will be timeless.”

Pakistani tennis star Aisamul Haq Qureshi, who also happens to be Hassan’s brother, serves as the face of the collection. “Shiza actually asked me to model for her menswear line. I guess, like all sisters, she thinks I am very handsome too,” Qureshi joked, while speaking about his experience. “The shoot itself was a lot of fun and the location was very interesting. We shot at Shahi Hamam in old Lahore which truly encapsulated the beauty of the city and added character to the pictures.”

Hassan launched her pret-a-porter and couture label back in 2014. Two years later, she showcased her bridal collection at the PFDC L’Oreal Paris Bridal Week 2016. “As her brother, I am very proud of Shiza. As a Pakistani, I’m very happy to see our fashion industry progress and evolve. I was very impressed by the professionalism when I walked the ramp.”

Hassan uses traditional techniques like zardozi, kaamdani, dabka, naksi and mixes them with contemporary cuts, dangling chains, metallic leaves, pearl detailing, tassels, crystals, braids and fringes to add more feel. There are jackets, flap shirts, bustiers, flowing lenghas and shararas in the mix too.

Hassan is a strong proponent of preserving one’s culture, tradition and folklore. “I have always embraced my love for traditional crafts. I believe one should think out of the box, experiment and then focus on that,” said the designer.
