Pakistani engineers overhaul AWACS jet bombarded in attack

I think Chinese technology is catching up fast with Swedish technology, may be in years to come we may not be dependent on West to that an extent.
AFAIK Pakistan has bought some AWACS from China(ZDK-03) that has better range and detection as compare to SAAB AWACS.

Over price issue.

Not compatible with F-16 and Mirages so we have to use two platforms for JF-17 ZK# and for rest we have to use Saab.

All fighters equipped with link 17 can communicate with zdk-03 including mirages and f-7s. The f-16 can do the same but through GCS as the Yankees don't want us to toy around with link16.

I dont know why such a perception exist. Perhaps due to less technical knowledge of how communication occurs. F-16 and SAAB can communicate directly. Both are compatible with each other. Then Pakistan has made ZDK-03 and chinese origin JET talk with SAAB over Link-17. If chinese jets wants to communicate with american jets, they will communicate via SAAB, not through GCS

Apparently, fresh graduates out of NUST can do projects of such a level quite easily.

It was not a political statement.
Pakistan is not considered to be "safe" for Western Engineers, so noone wanted to go.

The EriEye are Jet aircraft ???

That's really stupid thinking if someone think like that.............those engineers must have worked inside of Military base camps and even reside inside of military cantonments not on the road workshops............so there was no issue of security....... The only issue that can be guessed is Price negotiations...

The AWACS affair has nothing to do with India.
I know people working for SAAB and discussed it with them some time ago,
and noone was interested in spending time in Pakistan.
Did Pakistan offer to ship them to Sweden for repair?

Today's industry has in recent days revealed that three radar plane model Saab 2000 defense group Saab previously sold to Pakistan seriously injured in a terrorist attack. On August 16, 2012, a group of Taliban fighters into an air base Kamra, several mil outside Pakistan's capital Islamabad. DI say they attacked three Saab 2000 aircraft, which was equipped with the Swedish-developed radar system Erieye. The plan had been manufactured by Saab in Linköping and the Erieye radar built by Saab in Gothenburg.Reportedly DI destroyed one of the planes completely while the other two received serious injuries. Military of Pakistan stated the same day that a military aircraft injured in a rocket attack.
On August 21, the country's defense minister said that one of its Saab 2000 aircraft, the Saab 2000 AEW & C (Airborne Early Warning & Control) has been lost. Pakistan bought in 2006 four Saab 2000 aircraft from Sweden for more than 7 billion, of which three with Erieye radar. The contract was then carried out with the help of Swedish government export credits. The first plane was delivered in 2009 and the remaining years 2010-2012. According to DI, the company after the attack now count on new deliveries of maintenance and spare parts to Pakistan, worth 1-2 billion.

Meanwhile, sources for new technology that Saab has been difficult to recruit engineers who want to work in the terror stricken country because of security risks there. Foreigners who have been active in Pakistan has previously been targeted by the Taliban.

The country has been in was also rocked by bombings since militant Sunni Muslims with ties to al-Qaeda and the Taliban carried out attacks. Sebastian Carlsson, Head of Saab, would not disclose anything about the situation in business discussions with Pakistan. -Bolaget Never comment on any future deals, he says. As to the question whether he can confirm that it has been difficult to recruit staff to Pakistan, he said that the company always needs to hire and that this year needs to hire 500 new people. The latter is mainly due to the large order from the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration on new fighter aircraft, the Gripen E.

2007 stopped the ISP, the ISP, arms exports from Sweden to Pakistan, citing violence and unrest in the country. While the Authority accepts deliveries made as a result of earlier weapons contracts. In 2012 was carried out according to the ISP's own statistics five deliveries due to Pakistan at a total value of 615 million.

Seems like you never been in Pakistan that's why you are posting such posts are trying to create an image that in Pakistan every street Terrorists are walking with Guns like Hollywood movie...............you are far away from reality........Pakistan is country of more than 200 Million peoples........and there was only 0.2% of the population effected by those terrorists mostly on those areas which are near to Afghan border.......but now even those areas are 95% cleared by Pak Army... so stop listening and telling others fairy tales....

No, I post it because that is the explanation given.
Check the thread, and You will find a link to the article I read (posted by someone else)
If there were no security issues, the AWACS planes would not have been blown up in the first place.

If you look at it from the viewpoint of an engineer:
Why would You pick moving to Pakistan as the best alternative for Your life?

I can think of many better options.

This guy has a very tainted image of Pakistan. I guess he has been fed a lot of negative publicity by his media. He has been arguing with everyone.

Everyone understands the real reasons. Sweden is trying to appease India. They have an interest to sell their Gripen fighters.

why link 16 is so complicated?

I don't know the details about link-16/-17 but they are not compatible,
so a link-16 based fighter cannot communicate directly with a link-17 fighter.
The SAAB AWACS has link-16 inherently, and Pakistan has apparently added link-17 as well.
By adding a router in the AWACS you can forward messages on one link system to the other,

Guys .
Can we please stop this useless debate about whether the Swedish Engineers did not want to come to Pakistan due to financial, Security or other reasons. The job is done Finished!! Lets leave it a t that.
If you want to know the perception in the West is based on news and media outlets which convey an image of Pakistan as an unsafe country. this is true and sitting from the outside one cannot emphasize how scary the concept of someone going to Pajkistan is for some Pakistanis and also foreigners and Europeans. So from perception point of view I can verify that thought process. Whether it is reight or wrong is another debate.

The job is done indeed, but the airworthiness and the quality of the repair has been certified by PAF internally and by itself, not by the manufacturer, correct?

If the maintenance is under Saab even if the repairs were carried out in pakistan it would have to be certified by Saab for them to be able t oblige their commitments on insurance and other issues(maintenance and repairs). So the likely scenario is the planes were repaired locally and the reapirs certified by Saab as satisfactory for them to comply with Saab standards.

As long as the repair is certified, it is all good.

So what's the story behind this SAAB 2000? According to planespotters net, this former Crossair/Swiss/Polet SAAB 2000 was acquired by PAF in April 2016 and registered as J-029.

Sorry I cannot paste the link here, just search j-029 on planespotters(dot)net and you can see the history of this airframe including current registration and ownership
