KARACHI: The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Sunday clarified that there is a prescribed procedure for the presentation for the Test mace to the team topping the rankings.

Misbah-ul-Haq’s side has become only the fifth team after Australia, England, India and South Africa to top the ICC Test rankings since these were introduced in 2003.

Misbah-ul-Haq: “To top the table, which boasts some great teams and players, is something to be very proud of”

• David Richardson says Pakistan’s No.1 ranking is very well deserved and a testament to the quality of cricket it has consistently played over the past few years

• “The past few weeks of Test cricket have been incredibly absorbing with some high-quality competitive series being played, exhibiting what is so special about Test cricket,” says the ICC Chief Executive

Pakistan became the top-ranked Test team with the rain-ravaged fourth and final Test between India and West Indies at Port of Spain almost certain to end in a draw on Monday.

India needed to win the series 3-0 against the West Indies to remain the No 1 Test team regardless of results of other series following Australia relinquishing their top position after being whitewashed 3-0 by Sri Lanka last Wednesday.

Pakistan defeated England by 10 wickets at The Oval last week to draw the four-match 2-2, result which lifted Misbah-ul-Haq’s men to second in the ICC Test Championship standings just one point behind India who currently have 112 rating points.

But India will slip to 110 points if, as widely expected the fourth Test in Trinidad — where just 22 overs of play were possible on Thursday’s opening day — ends in a stalemate.

Therefore, Pakistan will automatically displace arch-rivals India to assume top Test team position with a difference of one point.

An ICC spokesman told Dawn from Dubai that a suitable time will be worked out between the home board of the top-ranked team and the ICC before a mace-presentation ceremony is held.

Each time a team tops the rankings during the season, the mace is passed on to it,” the spokesman pointed out.

It is a symbol of excellence for any team to top the ranking. In recognition of such an occurrence, the ICC and the home board [in this case the Pakistan Cricket Board] will plan the presentation event which would require the presence of all stakeholders including the captain because the mace is presented to the man leading the team.”

Misbah is presently on vacation in Norway while some of his Pakistan team-mates, including ODI skipper Azhar Ali who is also the Test vice-captain, are preparing to play England in the five-match One-day International series from Wednesday.

“Since the West Indies-India game is the last Test for a while, the top-ranked side will get the mace in due course. Unlike in the past few years when a team has held the mace for a considerable period on the basis of its being ranked No 1, the situation this time is quite different,” the spokesman remarked.

“With a busy schedule to follow, there is possibility of the mace changing hands depending on the outcome of series being played at the time around the cricketing world.

ICC Chief Executive David Richardson congratulated Pakistan on achieving the number-one Test ranking. “Misbah and his side deserve our heartiest congratulations. The number-one ranking is well deserved and a testament to the quality of cricket the team has consistently played over the past few years.

“The past few weeks of Test cricket have been incredibly absorbing with some high-quality competitive series being played, exhibiting what is so special about Test cricket. The battle for the top ranking has made it even more exciting for all fans.”

To mark Pakistan’s number-one Test status, it will be presented with the ICC Test Championship mace. The details of the presentation ceremony will be announced in due course.

The battle for the number-one ranking between the two traditional rivals will resume in September/October when New Zealand will visit India and Pakistan will host the West Indies in the UAE. Both the series will be three-Test rubbers.

The Test team rankings are updated at the end of each series. The ODI and T20I team rankings are updated after each match.

While the team at No 1 spot gets the opportunity of holding the mace, the prize-money among the four top-ranked is distributed on the April 1 cut-off date each year. The No 1 team receives $1 million, second-ranked side $500,000, the number three earns $200,000 and the fourth-ranked $100,000 in recognition of their performance,” he added.

ICC all set to present ICC Test Championship mace to Pakistan

By Raza Khan

Pakistan leap frogged to number one spot in the International Cricket Council Test team rankings after the final Test match of India and West Indies was washed out. As a result, ICC is all set to present the Test Championship mace to Pakistan who have achieved this feat for the first time.

Australia were whitewashed by Sri Lanka with a 3-0 defeat and as a result they gifted the top rank to India last week. India had already won the four match Test series against West Indies but they were required to seal it with 3-0 margin in order to stay at the top.

Pakistan on the other hand managed to level the series after grabbing a convincing victory at The Oval against England. They triumphed over the hosts by 10 wickets and jumped to the second spot with one point behind their arch rival India.

The final match at Queens Park Oval saw only 22 overs in which West Indies lost two wickets after 62 runs. The teams were not able to play again at the venue due to poor conditions in the aftermath of rain and India failed to finish with a 3-0 margin.

As a result Pakistan leaped to the number one rank with a one point difference with the second placed arch rivals.

ICC is planning to present mace to Pakistan in a presentation ceremony when the time is decided between Pakistan Cricket Board and ICC. The ICC spokesperson stressed that everyone including the captain needs to be present who will receive the mace. He stated to media, “Each time a team tops the rankings during the season, the mace is passed on to it. It is a symbol of excellence for any team to top the ranking. In recognition of such an occurrence, the ICC and the home board [in this case the Pakistan Cricket Board] will plan the presentation event which would require the presence of all stakeholders including the captain because the mace is presented to the man leading the team.”

The Greens skipper is currently on a vacation to Norway with his family whereas some of his teammates including the Test vice-captain Azhar Ali is set to play five match One Day International series against England.

The ICC spokesperson also emphasized that India Test tour to West Indies was the last game for a while and thus mace will be presented to the new number one team. He also stressed that there is possibility of the change of ranks with the upcoming busy long format schedule but since the top ranked teams gets opportunity of holding the mace, they will present it early.

Horrible choice for a Cup
Looks like a traffic pole

Or something that would attract , electricity from Tesla's many experiments

However , #1 in Test Ranking , just amazing achivement considering Australians seemed to have mastered the Art of retaining #1 position for long periods of last 10 years

The Million Dollar price offer is a decent incentive for Teams

Well million dollar incentive I just noticed is for team remaining 1, 2 & 3 top ranked...at cut-off date April 1 each year. So yeah first 3 best teams gets the prize money.

Pakistan will get test mace cup and has to retain no.1 or top 3 spots to get prize money until 1 April.

All Pakistan has to now do is to hold on to that spot.

Misbah-ul-Haq, Pakistan's Test captain, has expressed confidence in international cricket returning to the country soon, and said it was ironic his team's rise to No. 1 in the ICC rankings had to be accomplished without home-crowd support.

The ICC chief executive David Richardson presented Misbah with the Test mace at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on Wednesday, after Pakistan had risen to No. 1 for the first time since the current Test rankings were introduced in 2003, by virtue of their 2-2 draw in England this summer. Pakistan are the fifth side after Australia, England, India and South Africa to top the ICC Test rankings.

"There is nothing better than being No. 1 in the Test rankings," Misbah said. "It's one of the best days in my life; the happiest day in my cricketing career. And there can't be a better location to receive the ICC Test Championship mace than this ground where we last played a home Test seven years ago. It is ironic for both the players as well as the fans that the journey to the No. 1 position has been outside Pakistan.

"The players have missed on the crowd support, while the spectators have been unable to watch live some magnificent team and individual performances. But I am confident that things will change and international cricket will soon return to Pakistan.

"I would like to congratulate everyone who has been part of this achievement and part of this journey; every individual, every coach, every selector who has worked hard for this No. 1 position.

"The families of the players have really sacrificed a lot too. We have to spend almost six to seven months out of the country without them and that's difficult [for both parties]. Credit should be given to the families. It's a proud moment for all of us and I hope we can go together at the top for a long period."

Apart from a visit by Zimbabwe in 2015, no Full Member country has toured Pakistan since March 2009, when gunmen attacked the bus transporting the Sri Lankan team to Gaddafi Stadium on a morning of the Lahore Test. Since then, Pakistan have had to host their home fixtures at neutral venues, primarily the UAE.

"Being part of a team that is ranked No.1 in Test cricket is a pinnacle achievement for any cricketer. Pakistan is a deserving recipient of the mace," Richardson said. "It is all the more impressive that it has reached the number-one Test ranking despite not being able to play a series in front of its home crowd since March 2009.

"Today is all about the team, today it's all about Misbah. One of the things that makes Pakistan one of the most watchable teams in the world is the fact that they've got a man for all occasions. They've got batsmen who can deal with a tight situation, and on the bowling side, you can't prepare seaming wickets against them because they've got the seamers to exploit those conditions, left-arm and the right-arm and of course you've got a world class legspinner, so you've got all the ingredients for a top team and we are looking forward to Pakistan if not staying at No. 1 then certainly challenging for good many years to come. A strong Pakistan side is good for international cricket."

Pakistan face a challenge to hold on to their No. 1 Test ranking. India, presently No. 2, will displace Pakistan if they beat New Zealand in the upcoming three-Test series at home. Pakistan's next Test series is in October against West Indies in the UAE. The team that is No. 1 on April 1, 2017, will receive $ 1 million from the ICC.

"The next target we have set for ourselves is to finish as the No. 1 Test side at the April 1 cut-off date," Misbah said. "It is not going to be easy as we have series against formidable sides like the West Indies, New Zealand and Australia. But instead of getting overawed by our opponents, we need to trust in our abilities, focus on our strengths and try to be as consistent as possible."
