What's new

Pakistan Army fires 11 serving officers including Generals for corruption.

Dear all a bold step on the part of Pakistan's Armed Forces. IMHO, there should be no part corruption going to play in any institute or politics in Pakistan.

There should be no ifs and buts, simply no corruption in Pakistan by anyone.

COAS Gen Raheel Sharif sacks 13 army officers, including a Lt General, a Major General, five Brigadiers, on corruption charges.

This meaningful and concrete action is like a breeze of fresh air in the suffocating environment created in Pakistan due to corruption and its absolutely shameless defense.
Let us hope he continues this good work and ensures that Military culture becomes second to none in terms of professionalism.

At least we have some hope and it is good that Military has taken initiative instead of protecting its own, which has been an old accusation of all its critics.
Now the onus lies on Government and other political parties to at least start cleaning their ranks; instead of prating about who was more corrupt.
In context of Panama leaks, we have hit an all time low in terms of the shamelessness of our Political elite to defend their corrupt acts of unbearable proportion. They are become unbearably stubborn in defending the murder of this nation which they are perpetrating.
They are making the State look like a joke which protects the people who are leeching off the bounties of this land. This perception of lawlessness, injustice and absolutely flagrant violation of all norms of decency being created due to the antics of our political elite is always going to hurt us even if the economic factor is taken out of the equation.
What is giving more and more ideological space to the extremism that plagues us?
Is it it not this diminishing confidence in the State/Government which creates the self styled Shariah courts of JUD or Laal Masjid and even Swat?
We cannot defeat these terrorist scum if we are allowing such corrupt people to run the organs of the state and become its face.

P.S. I think we shall have new conspiracy theories about how this is also an ISI plot to destabilize government in wake of Panama leaks...our nation can be trusted to give a serious thought to any conspiracy theory, no matter how lame.

RAWALPINDI: In an unprecedented move, Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif dismissed 12 army officers from service over charges of corruption on Thursday, military sources said.

Five brigadiers, three colonels and a major general are among those dismissed by the army chief, DawnNews reported.

There has been no official confirmation regarding the incident.

The development comes two days after the COAS said "across the board accountability is necessary for the solidarity, integrity and prosperity of Pakistan", adding that the war against terror cannot be won unless "the menace of corruption is uprooted".

Gen Raheel said "Pakistan’s Armed Forces will fully support every meaningful effort in that direction which would ensure a better future for our next generations."

The army chief's call for across-the-board accountability comes as Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is embroiled in the explosive Panama Papers which count his family among other global political elite with undeclared offshore assets.

Opposition leaders have demanded a probe into the scandal, with some calling for the PM to step down.

Quarters close to the PM’s Office say PM Nawaz is determined to have his three children cleared of accusations of money laundering and tax evasion in the aftermath of Panama Papers leak.

Politicians and analysts weigh in
PML-N's Zubair Umar said that while the army chief's move was laudable, only the PML-N and prime minister should not be targeted. He called for holding "corrupt elements" within the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) and PPP accountable as well.

PTI's Shah Mahmood Qureshi appreciated the development, terming the move a signal that Operation Zarb-i-Azb and the war against corruption will not stop. "This action will bring more credibility to the state's security in carrying out an across-the-board operation."

Defence analyst Hassan Askari while speaking to DawnNews said the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), the Federal Investigation Agency and other agencies will be pressed to take similar action regarding bureaucracy.

Awami National Party's Zahid Khan said the Panama leaks was an example that the civilian leadership always tries to delay such actions, adding that people will "not tolerate such double standards anymore".

Jamaat-i-Islami's Ameer Sirajul Haq said the civilian leadership should stand united against "economic terrorism" like it stands against militancy and terrorism after Army Public School massacre. He said the government was "still confused about forming a commission over Panama Papers".

The army chief's actions will have repercussions for civilian institutions and corrupt politicians under the microscope would be probed transparently.

Security analyst Talat Masood while speaking to DawnNews said the Army chief has "set an example for politicians to follow" and the decision would "build pressure on politicians as well as the judiciary to root out corruption".

"This decision has come at a time when certain sections were apprehensive about the involvement of Pakistan Army in civilian matters," Masood.

"Accountability per se is not a political issue, but then the national conversation at the moment is about the excesses of elected leaders. Perhaps a better way to interject itself into that conversation would have been for the military to start the so-called across-the-board accountability process itself.

Surely in offering the military to greater financial scrutiny, a positive example would be set that politicians would be under legitimate pressure to follow.

Yet, where the military errs, the political class inflicts damage on itself — and the wider cause of democracy."

In a first, Army chief General Raheel Sharif on Thursday dismissed 11 military officers over corruption, Express News reported.

One lieutenant general, one major general, five brigadiers, three colonels and one major are among those dismissed by the Army chief.

There is no official confirmation of the dismissal as yet.

Army chief calls for ‘across-the-board accountability’ in veiled reference to Panama leaks

The development comes days after the army chief said “across the board accountability is necessary for the solidarity, integrity and prosperity of Pakistan”, adding that the war against terror cannot be won unless “the menace of corruption is uprooted.”

“Across-the-board accountability is necessary for the solidarity, integrity and prosperity of Pakistan. Pakistan’s armed forces will fully support every meaningful effort in that direction, which would ensure a better future for our next generations,” General Raheel said during his visit to the Signal Regimental Centre in Kohat on Tuesday.

The move is widely being seen as “tightening the noose” around Nawaz Sharif.
The army chief’s statement had followed Panama Papers revelations shrouding the prime minister’s family among many other prominent political figures holding off-shore wealth.

Around 220 Pakistanis, including three children of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, have been named in the massive leak of documents from a Panama-based law firm.

Prime Minister Nawaz has rejected any allegations of money laundering, claiming that his children have legitimate businesses abroad, and has called for the establishment of an inquiry commission.

Rs4.3b NLC scam: Military probe finds two ex-generals guilty

In August last year, a long-delayed but much awaited military probe into the Rs4.3 billion National Logistics Cell (NLC) scam had found two former generals guilty of illegal investments in the stock exchange. Following the inquiry, military’s media wing, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), said that in light of findings of the inquiry, the two accused retired generals were punished under the Pakistan Army Act.
