Over 10,000 Indians Facing Food Scarcity In Saudi Arabia, Says Sushma Swaraj

In a humanitarian crisis, over 10,000 Indian workers in Saudi Arabia are facing severe food shortage due to financial hardship after losing their jobs and the government has ordered its mission in the Gulf nation to provide food to them besides other assistance.

Late in the evening, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj appealed to 30 lakhs Indians in that country to help their "fellow brothers and sisters", asserting that there is nothing "mightier" than the collective will of the Indian nation.

"We have asked @IndianEmbRiyadh to provide free ration to the unemployed Indian workers in Saudi Arabia," she said in a series of tweets. Ms Swaraj said Indians in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait were facing various problems relating to their work and wages and that the "matters are much worse" in the former.

Her initial response came following a tweet by a man who said around 800 Indians were starving for the last three days in Jeddah and sought her intervention.

However, later, she said "The number of Indian workers facing food crisis in Saudi Arabia is over ten thousand. It is not 800 as is being reported." Minister of State for External Affairs VK Singh will soon travel to the Gulf nation to assess severity of the problem and try to resolve it.
Ms Swaraj said a large number of Indians have lost their jobs in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait and that their employers have not paid wages and closed down their factories.

"As a result our brothers and sisters in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait are facing extreme hardship," she said, adding while the situation in Kuwait is "manageable", matters are much "worse" in Saudi Arabia.

Ms Swaraj said Minister of State for external affairs MJ Akbar will take up the issue with Kuwait and Saudi authorities. "My colleagues @Gen_VKSingh will go to Saudi Arabia to sort out these matters and @MJakbar will take up with Kuwait and Saudi authorities."

The Indian Consulate officials have already left for a highway camp near Jeddah where hundreds of workers need assistance.

The Consulate, in association with the Indian Community in Jeddah, has already distributed 15,475 kg of food stuff and other items.

"I appeal to 30 lakhs Indians in Saudi Arabia. Please help your fellow brothers and sisters. There is nothing mightier than the collective will of Indian nation," Ms Swaraj said.

is India govt ....... with all due respect concerned about people hungry in India ..... i m prety sure that number exceed this one ............ its just a stunt to have a greater say in Gulf countries to counter Pakistani effect ......... as telling them ......... we also have labour in gulf its not just Pakistan

Well it is not job of saudi government to provide financial assistance to foreigners. They were there for work so they can leave any time and maybe indian government can help them.

Yes they have already send the food , Foreign minister for state Rtd. Gen VK singh is on his way to sort out the issue but 10000 is huge number.

They are helping even we have a 3 million strong diaspora govt has also appealed them to help the people but the issue how this happened how 10000 people lost their jobs in one go . you are right Saudi govt cant do anything just can help in getting the due payment of workers .

If this situation is true why not evacuate??? Indian government seems to be intent on keeping the workers trapped in Saudi..For so many people to go hungry and starve is near impossible in Saudi if not all together impossible...

I will not discount the theory that many of these workers are responsible for their plight..they came on so called "free visas" to work free lance in lucrative construction market on a short term them and then it collapsed as government is pushing forward re-structuring and many of these workers were officially "ghost" as they were registered under various contractors but actually running their own free lance shows..Once their "ghost" employees are busted and system closed they can no longer get paid...or find any free lance work..as they are effectively illegal...there are too much black marketing and racketeering in the contracting sector..almost run exclusively by Indians..and government has attacked it with a massive blow to drive out irregularities..

I truely hope those people get their hard earned wages but i wouldnt bet on Saudi generosity to pay them. Many saudis firms have gone bankrupt due to the financial crisis

True, they are foreign citizens so it's not the responsibility of the Saudi government.

The only concern is they are blue collar workers supporting their families back home , they spend money to go to saudi for work , if the dupe them then its really wrong .

If they have valid visa then no one can stop them to pursue their employers and hope Saudi govt will help them for their payments but again they are poor and deserve some good treatment , If they are illegal then Saudis will deport them anyways

You are not supposed to spend money to go to saudi..Indians are the fore front of visa racketeering and they have distorted the complete market..
