WASHINGTON - Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama said Wednesday that he would possibly send troops into Pakistan to hunt down terrorists, an attempt to show strength when his chief rival has described his foreign policy skills as naive.

The Illinois senator warned Pakistani President Gen. Pervez Musharraf that he must do more to shut down terrorist operations in his country and evict foreign fighters under an Obama presidency, or Pakistan will risk a U.S. troop invasion and losing hundreds of millions of dollars in U.S. military aid.

"Let me make this clear," Obama said in a speech prepared for delivery at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. "There are terrorists holed up in those mountains who murdered 3,000 Americans. They are plotting to strike again. It was a terrible mistake to fail to act when we had a chance to take out an al-Qaida leadership meeting in 2005. If we have actionable intelligence about high-value terrorist targets and President Musharraf won't act, we will."

The excerpts were provided by the Obama campaign in advance of the speech.

Obama's speech comes the week after his rivalry with New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton erupted into a public fight over their diplomatic intentions.

Obama said he would be willing to meet leaders of rogue states like Cuba, North Korea and Iran without conditions, an idea that Clinton criticized as irresponsible and naive. Obama responded by using the same words to describe Clinton's vote to authorize the Iraq war and called her "Bush-Cheney lite."

The speech was a condemnation of President Bush's leadership in the war on terror. He said the focus on Iraq has left Americans in more danger than before Sept. 11, 2001, and that Bush has misrepresented the enemy as Iraqis who are fighting a civil war instead of the terrorists responsible for the attacks six years ago.

"He confuses our mission," Obama said, then he spread responsibility to lawmakers like Clinton who voted for the invasion. "By refusing to end the war in Iraq, President Bush is giving the terrorists what they really want, and what the Congress voted to give them in 2002: a U.S. occupation of undetermined length, at undetermined cost, with undetermined consequences."

Obama said that as commander in chief he would remove troops from Iraq and putting them "on the right battlefield in Afghanistan and Pakistan." He said he would send at least two more brigades to Afghanistan and increase nonmilitary aid to the country by $1 billion.

He also said he would create a three-year, $5 billion program to share intelligence with allies worldwide to take out terrorist networks from Indonesia to Africa.

Typical election time chest thumping war cries. I suppose in more primitive cultures it would be all about "showing your superior manhood" and "ferocity" to edge out the competitors. Not sure how Hillary would cope with that... some people would suggest that she would cope just fine..:D

The unfortunate thing about most American politicians is that they do not understand the world. They are like goldfish in a bowl.

Having seen "war" waged by the US in Panama and other bannana republics, they think everything will be a cake walk.

And unfortunately, they never learn lesson from history. They thought Iraq would welcome them with garlands and women lining the streets and kissing the liberators! Sadly, soon they learnt that the Iraqis were not overjoyed with the liberation since all the invasion could achieve is breaking down a working, even if warped in freedom and democracy, system wherein the otherwise disciplined citizens swelled the ranks of the militants being jobless! The resultant is a Holy Mess in reply to ObL's Holy War! Interestingly, ObL's terrorists during Saddam's time was conspicuous by their absence.

Now, Obama (not Osama) advocates a march into Pakistan!

Where will he get the troops for this military adventure? They have already scraped the bottom of the barrel. And what is the Pak Armed Forces like? Bedraggled bannana republic soldiers? Asking for trouble, that is what Obama is doing!

It's the time muslim countries should think to form a military alliance e.g. Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Iran, The Gulf Arab States and Turkey etc to counter the menace of Imperialists and Zionist which can catch them unaware at any time and at any moment. See the West and the US itself. With all their military might and technological advances they are still forming alliances incl. NATO to counter "unknown" enemy even after fall of Soviet Union and end of the cold war.
As long as Khilafa was there nobody dared, even British or US to bring and settle Jews on their lands, let alone the creation of Israel. Nobody dare to see towards the holy land of Arabian peninsula, nobody dare to bring there Naval fleet in Arabian Gulf etc. It was the religious duty of muslims to protect the institution of Khilafa and as long as they were under this umbrella nobody was successfull in harming them in the way they are being harmed and destroyed today. Whatever is happening today to them is from God for their negligience to keep the Khilafa intact. Our unity in the form of Khilafa is the key for our safer future as well as for the world peace and justice.
Time is running out fast for us. Even we start from now on, we can be a formidable force and nobody can undermine our strengths and potentials and no "OBAMA" will dare in future to issue such humiliating warnings.

Quran says: ‘Hold tight to the rope of God, altogether and do not separate. Remember God's gifts and blessings unto you all, when you were enemies; remember how He forged your hearts together in love, and by His grace, you became brethren.’ (The Holy Qur'an 3:103).

oh God there will be no last alliance!
Maybe it was just an act on Obama's part to show how tough he could be as a leader(well he could be though).

Kbaghdaid,

Be practical.

The repeated conventional wars in the Middle East is worth taking into account.

It was only the guerilla actions of the Hezbollah Shias which stopped the Israelis short. It is believed that the Israelis were motheaten in their defence forces and yet they had their bravado and resting on their past glories alone to egg them on

It may interest you the hi tech weaponry is only available with the West. So, where are you going to get it from, if you get tough with the West?

And after what Osama has done, all will be afraid to give weapons if you start talking about the Caliphate and any Islamic Treaty Organisation like NATO!

Do you think that the West, Russia or China would like to have an Islamic threat to challenge them? Remember all those countries have Islamic problems. Blame Osama that it will never come to pass.

In other threads you have quoted the scriptures as the sole guidance to governance. Someone [The Wisdom Tree(?)] drew your attention to the realities of Statehood. Read that. One one side you don't want realities of modern statehood and only religion (you criticised Musharraf and BB as anti Islam and secular) and yet on the other hand you want to have hi tech weaponry and a NATO like Islamic alliance. Where are you going to get the weapons, ships and aircraft from? Following the religion alone will not get you these goodies!

You know what, I'd love to see them try, nothing more would please me than seeing predator drones being shot down by Anza's, and JF-17's being scrambled to intercept F-16's/tornado's. I really don't reckon the USA has the ba*ls to go into Pakistan unilaterally, that too for limited strikes.

In the air, the US will rule supreme. Of that there is no doubt.

But in a ground attack, is where the US will have all the problems.

US air and ground work in tandem sir, constant barrage of air to ground munitions and cruise missile attack from deep in Arabian sea.
Pakistan is no pushover by a long shot, you have fought them and i am sure you agree.
But US war juggernaut in full-speed is quite a force to be reckoned with. Its just a matter of weeks before it is all over.

PS: US will never attack pakistan, it is effectively under their control and you could call it the 51st state of US

I know the US tactics and their operations wherein firepower is the criterion. But this is mountains and they have very little experience. It is totally a different kettle of fish.

Also fire-power in the mountains is not very effective since there will be overs and unders.

First of all the Caliphate will be there to secure the border of that area under them. If the Caliphacy comes into existance from Morocco to Pakistan, the Nuclear missiles of Pakistan will be spread from east to west and whole of Europe and Israel will be under its range and after achieving the ICBM capability US also can be targeted. With this deterrence no one will dare to attack that large nation, rich in resources (with Oil reserves on No. 1 position), large population, controlling the nerve centres of the trade routes etc. US will die for peace then.
