Navy in trilateral war games

NEW DELHI: The Indian, Japanese and US navies will conduct, for the first time ever, trilateral exercises in the Pacific Ocean in April.

Apart from displaying India's naval ambitions, it will be a first in many ways. Most important, it will be the first time after the 2004 tsunami that the three countries will be seen courting each other.

Incidentally, foreign minister Pranab Mukherjee will visit Japan from March 20-23 to give greater teeth to a strategic relationship that gives both India and Japan crucial wiggle room in foreign policy.

It comes from both countries needing a lever to balance China, as well as converging economic and strategic interests. It will be the centre-piece of the new-look relationship when Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe visits India in another few months.

Before Mukherjee's visit, Japanese senior vice minister N Asano will meet the MEA leadership here on Friday. Both countries will announce that Japanese foreign minister Taro Aso will represent Japan at the forthcoming SAARC summit here in April.

Both countries are ramping up the level of engagement, particularly in the regional context.
