NATO warns Turkey against buying Chinese, Russian air defense systems

NATO may avoid sharing ballistic missiles intelligence with Turkey if the naiton decides to buy Chinese or Russian systems for its missile defense program

Ankara would have to operate without NATO’s intelligence information on incoming ballistic missiles if it chooses to buy Chinese or Russian systems for its national air and missile defense program, officials of the Western alliance have warned Turkey.

Participating in the ongoing competition to win Turkey’s national air and missile contract are the U.S. partnership between Raytheon and Lockheed Martin, with their Patriot air defense systems; Russia’s Rosoboronexport, marketing the S300; China’s CPMIEC (China Precision Machinery Export-Import Corp.), offering its HQ-9; and the Italian-French Eurosam, maker of the SAMP/T Aster 30. Turkey is planning to make its selection late this year or early next year.

Many Western officials and experts say that since the Russian and the Chinese systems are not compatible with NATO systems, their potential eventual victory might provide them with access to classified NATO information, and as a result may compromise NATO’s procedures.

But despite this criticism, Turkey so far has ruled against expelling the Chinese and Russian options, saying there is no need to exclude them from the Turkish competition.

One Western expert countered that “if, say, the Chinese win the competition, their systems will be in interaction, directly or indirectly, with NATO’s intelligence systems, and this may lead to the leak of critical NATO information to the Chinese, albeit inadvertently. So this is dangerous.”

“NATO won’t let that happen,” another Western official told the Hürriyet Daily News on Monday. “If the Chinese or the Russians win the Turkish contest, their systems will have to work separately. They won’t be linked to NATO information systems.”

This was the first time NATO has strongly urged Turkey against choosing the non-Western systems.

“One explanation is that Turkey itself doesn’t plan to [ultimately] select the Chinese or Russian alternatives, but still is retaining them among their options to put pressure on the Americans and the Europeans to [lower] their prices,” the Western expert said.

Turkey’s long-range air and missile defense systems program (T-Loramids) has been designed to counter both enemy aircraft and missiles.

NATO missile shield

Turkey’s national program is totally separate and independent from NATO’s own plans to design, develop and build its own collective missile shield.

The Western alliance decided during a leaders’ summit meeting in Lisbon in November last year to create the collective missile shield against potential incoming ballistic missiles from rogue countries. Ankara agreed to the decision only after the alliance accepted a Turkish request that Iran or other countries would not be specifically mentioned as potential sources of threats.

NATO now is seeking to deploy a special X-band radar in Turkish territory for the early detection of missiles launched from the region.

Senior U.S. and Turkish officials discussed the matter in mid-July in Istanbul on the sidelines of a visit by U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and both sides reported progress toward an eventual deployment of the X-band radar on Turkish soil.

Ideally, in the event of a launch of a ballistic missile from a rogue state, it would be detected by the X-band radar, and U.S.-made SM-3 interceptors – based on U.S. Aegis destroyers to be deployed in the eastern Mediterranean and later possibly in Romania – would then be fired to hit the incoming missile mid-flight.

Western racists have decided that Turks are "not European enough" to join them in the EU, but want to forbid Turkiye from colluding with the East too? What kind of bigotted logic is that?

that's pretty stupid.....so it's OKAY that the French sell NATO-standard Mistral-class destroyers to the Russians; but it's not okay if Turkiye pays money to induct a system from the Chinese?

NATO has become a joke. Even people in NATO countries agree with that.

they've lost vision; they ran out of steam

NATO was set up as a consortium of member-states who belonged to the ''f*ck you soviet union motherfucke*rs'' club....

but that club seems as good as dead now. You have member states selling naval destroyers to the Russians....speaking of which --- where was mighty NATO when Georgia was getting invaded during the war of South Ossetia?? They just sat idly, ''expressing concern over the aggression'' and ''appealing for calm''

and that was just months after NATO expressed interest in inducting Georgia into the NATO club!!!!!

NATO IS A JOKE

yes sir nato is a joke and they come and voilate our territorial sovereignity every now and then and we just sit idle like gays,??i hear nato helicopters came and attacked Pakistani checkpost and killed Pakistani soldiers and left...
and we hear Pakistan has lodged a protest..some times when more of out soldiers are killed by nato we hear Pakistan has lodged a strong protest?lol
sir this is a joke...we are fooling our own people.....pro americans are on all top positions....to them the future of their children in the west and kick backs and commissions is more valuable than the self respect of their fellow country men and peers.....
if we have have to lodge protests against armed and bloody incursions that are kiling Pakistanis then we shoud stop wasting money on defence...like this atleast we would be honest and Curse of God might not show up on the faces of our leaders anymore who people vote in...

if the dear leaders -- who are representing Pakistan and are supposed to be the 'commanders in chief -- dont have self-respect or a modicum of dignity, how can you expect NATOs to show any respect?

all i can tell you --- if you're a citizen of Pakistan, then value the power of your vote in 2013.

by the way, Pakistan did suspend the supply routes after the incursion incident -- both in 2008 and this year as well. There have been several misunderstandings between both sides; but essentially it is Pak leaderships jobs to find ways to tend to them.

p.s. the government in principle, allows many of those incursions and NATO obliges......if wikileaks and news sources are to be believed :)

Turkey has an impressive technical know how, engineering and R/D infrastructure. It can buy Chinese or Russian bare bone systems and integrate its own NATO compatible command and control system. End of the day all missle systems fire on the same principle. Its only a difference of radar and control system.

Well that is very wrong of NATO to simply threaten like this when France and other countries are selling weapons to Russia itself. Knowing Erdogan, he will do just the opposite; buy the Russian S-500 system without anything. This is the beginning of splitting between NATO and Turkey...

I think he Should buy the Russian S300. It would be a much needed slap on NATO for their double standards and meddling in Turkey's internal affairs.

One doesn't understand as to why Turkey remains in NATO.

At every step the Europeans are humiliating Turkey.

They are not even admitting Turkey into the EU when others are sailing in.

And Turkey has been a NATO ally from 1952, IIRC.

What does EU got to do with NATO ?

What does EU got to do with NATO ?

Core members of NATO are western Europeans and they are led by the U.S. what they do doesn't go ahead without the backing of the U.S.
What is happening now isn't just about NATO having issues with Turkey. It is more of the case The U.S. is not happy about Turkey dealing with China and Russia. Heck they would be upset too when India starts exporting technologies! Just you watch.

I simply fail to see how EU ''humiliated'' Turkiye?

and what does EU or EU membership have to do with Turkiye and its existing membership in NATO --- an organization which is on the decline and is very much likely to be disbanded within the next 5-10 years
