AFP: NATO supplies in Pakistan remain blocked

PESHAWAR, Pakistan — A blockade of the main land route for NATO supplies from Pakistan into Afghanistan continued Saturday as queues of trucks and tankers formed at the border crossing, officials said.

Pakistan halted the convoys on Thursday after officials blamed cross-border NATO helicopter fire for the deaths of three Pakistani soldiers.
"The situation is the same. The border is blocked for NATO supplies," an official at Torkham, the main border crossing in Pakistan's Khyber district, told AFP by telephone.

A senior security official in the northwestern city of Peshawar also confirmed that convoys were suspended for third day but said negotiations to solve the problem continued.

"Long queues of trucks and oil tankers are waiting along Torkham and in the adjacent areas for the reopening," the official at Torkham said.
NATO said aircraft had entered Pakistani airspace Thursday in self-defence and killed "several armed individuals" after the crews believed they had been fired at from the ground.

It was the fourth such strike this week by NATO helicopters pursuing militants into Pakistani territory in actions that have been condemned by the government.

Khyber is on the main NATO supply route through Pakistan into Afghanistan, where more than 152,000 US and NATO forces are fighting an intensifying Taliban insurgency.

The Pakistani government said it was investigating Thursday's incident in the Kurram district of the northwestern tribal belt, which Washington has branded an Al-Qaeda headquarters and hub of militants fighting in Afghanistan.

I think lifting the blockade so soon is a mistake. Americans understand money and I think as a strategy we have to make it non-profitable for Americans to attack Pakistan. On each violation, block their supply for prolonged periods till they are conditioned into not attacking us any more like how you'd tame a wild animal.

The Hindu : News / International : Pentagon in talks with Pak to re-open its Afghan supply route

The Pentagon has said that it is in talks with the Pakistani officials to resolve the issue of blocking of NATO and US supply line to Afghanistan, but noted that they have developed alternate routes and this was not an immediate national security issue.

There is no immediate impact from the Pakistani move, Pentagon spokesman Col David Lapan told reporters.

“Right now, (it’s) too soon to tell because, obviously, we don’t know how long that might last. We are in discussions with the Pakistani government in the hope that we can resolve the issue through discussion,” Lapan said.

Other crossings along the Pakistan—Afghanistan border remains open to NATO trucks, he said, adding they also have air routes and a northern land route to keep supplies flowing.

About half of the cargo needed by US troops in Afghanistan flows through the two Pakistan border crossings.

Pakistan yesterday closed the Khyber Pass supply route for US—led NATO troops in Afghanistan after a coalition helicopter attack killed three Pakistani soldiers at a border post.

Lapan, however, said that it was the Pakistani border troops that fired first at the US helicopters and the fire was returned in self—defence.

“Even the statement that the Pakistanis put out indicated that their forces used rifle fire at the helicopters as a warning. And, well, if you fire at a helicopter in a combat zone, they’ll usually take that as hostile and return fire,” Lapan said.

State Department spokesman P J Crowley said ISAF is working with the Pakistani Government to investigate the incident.

“There has been an incident along the Afghan—Pakistan border. We take seriously our responsibilities as a partner, and there’s a review ongoing and we are working with the Pakistani Government on both of these issues,” he said.

LAHORE: Officials of the Pakistan Army and NATO forces launched a joint investigation into the border incursions that killed three Pakistani soldiers on Thursday, as blockade of NATO supplies from Pakistan into Afghanistan continued on Saturday for a third day.

According to a report, the investigations, to be led by officials of the Pakistan Army, would also include US army officials. The investigating team would visit Afghanistan to carry out an inquiry and hold talks regarding the attacks, the report added.

Stern action would be taken against those involved in the cross border attack. The three Pakistani troops were killed in an early morning raid on Thursday when NATO choppers fired at a Pakistani military post 200 metres inside the border in the Kurram Agency.

Pakistan halted the convoys on Thursday as a reaction to the deaths of the three soldiers.

Apologies are cheap, blood is not.

We need some sort of state level assurance that attacks in Pakistan would cease.

US, Pak close to supply route solution

US and Pakistan are close to finding a solution to Islamabad's recent ban on a crucial American supply line to Afghanistan, the White House has said. "We are in discussions and working with the government of Pakistan to address the concerns relating to the closure of the border there. We believe we are close to producing some results on that and may have more on that in the future," White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said.

The discussions in this regard are happening at the Foggy Bottom headquarters of the State Department between the diplomats of the two countries, he said.

"We're working government to government. We have expressed our condolences for what happened several days ago in Pakistan with ISAF and their forces. We're working through the border closing right now," Gibbs said.

Since Thursday, Pakistan had blocked a land route for NATO convoys carrying supplies to Afghanistan after officials blamed a cross-border NATO helicopter attack for the deaths of three Pakistani soldiers.

Meanwhile, both the State Department and Pentagon said the ongoing blockage of NATO supply route to Afghanistan by Pakistan in the last few days is not having any impact on US operations across the border.

"I'm not aware that the closure of this one gate has had any material effect on our ability to resupply our forces. It hasn’t been a problem," State Department spokesman PJ Crowley said.

"I can't speak to the reasons why that particular route is currently not available, but it has, last time I checked, not interfered with our ability to resupply our forces in Afghanistan," he said.

"Just to clarify, I'm only aware of one particular gate that remains closed. We do have multiple routes into Afghanistan. The flow of materiel through Pakistan to Afghanistan continues, but this is an issue that we continue to discuss with Pakistan," Crowley said.

"We are continuing to have the dialogue," said Pentagon spokesman Col David Lapan but specific details of the dialogue were unavailable.

"As they indicated last week to us that the Pakistani military was concerned that rising tension might cause security concerns. And that was the reason behind closing that particular route," he said, adding the Pakistani authorities were concerned about violence inside the country.

Approximately 50 per cent of the US supplies to Afghanistan goes through Pakistan, Lapan said.

Well, yesterday was watching few of the current affairs program on the Pakistani dish channels and all are surprised about the strict reaction this time the govt has shown. This was not expected, in other words for this many days the supply would be blocked.

It seems things have gotten serious this time, as last time also, they killed 14 soldiers with an airstrike, if we let them go easily this time, next time they will do more violations.

I hope, we keep it blocked for atleast another week, it will really be a good message to the NATO and US, that you don't mess and then expect no reaction from us.

I have heard that the other route has also been blocked. Lets see what is cooking in there. After what has happened in last few days, Kiyani would be in for a real tough time if he resumes the supplies without any compensation and formal apologies from US/Nato.. I hope he keeps them block for another 10-12 days!

One dead as Nato supplies torched in Quetta - GEO.tv

Even if the other route isnt blocked they are not going to get much,as apparently Pakistan has stopped bothering too much about protecting the supply line.

Well,NATO and ISAF need to realize how much Efforts Pakistan put in to keep teh supply line going.

I agree with you about the potential and determination of the people of Pakistan.

However, war is ugly, for both sides, and is best avoided, unless absolutely necessary.

Needless bravado or machismo should have no place in situations such as the one presently evolving in relation to the NATO attacks and supply line issues.
