NEW DELHI: Continuing with its Operation Rahat, the IAF's old but gigantic heavy-lift Mi-26 helicopter has flown four sorties since Friday to airlift 17,500-kg of equipment, including two bulldozers, required by the Border Roads Organization (BRO) to reconstruct roads in flood-ravaged Uttarakhand.

"The two bulldozers were heli-lifted from Pitthoragarh to Bangapani, which is 96-km away,'' said an official.

Overall, the IAF helicopters and aircraft since June 18 have airlifted about 21,560 people and thousands of kg relief material in around 2,790 sorties.

The Mi-26 is the world's largest and most powerful helicopter capable of lifting up to 20 tonnes. Having inducted four Mi-26s from Russia in the late-1980s, IAF is now left with only two of them.

They have used for heavy-lift operations, including the airlift of artillery guns to the Kargil heights during the 1999 conflict with Pakistan. "The Mi-26 will continue to operate in Uttarakhand to maintain supply of aviation fuel and rescue work as well as provide heli-lift to heavy equipment of the BRO for repair and construction work,'' said an officer.

I want that Russia upgrade this gaint with fuel efficient engine, modern avionics & communication system, new trasmission & other neccessary upgades to give a hard competion to other heavy lift helicopters.

This is where Mi-26 is better than chinook.

yap but got more advance and no CG problem in chinook which beat mi26.. if you have only one arm you can only life one item at a time though you have have stronge Muscle can lift more weight... mi26 ca lift one item at a time if you load more mi 26 will have CG problem where as in chinook roter on sides and have 3 hooks i guess so three item of diffrent weight without CG problem..

Its not the only problem. M-26 are Largest yet Very Costlyto maintain. And more over supply of spares parts are not avail. If russia want to upgrade it will cost more for its upgrade on a project which has very less demand. ! Not a good idea .

The CH-47F and Mi-26 are radically different helicopters. The Chinook uses a tandem rotor layout compared with the Mi-26's conventional helicopter layout with a main and tail rotor.

The Mi-26 is much larger, with a maximum take off weight of 56,000kg (123,000lb) compared with the Chinook's maximum gross weight of 22,668kg.

The Chinook, however, can be transported in the hold of the C-17 Globemaster III, of which India has ordered 10 examples. Boeing says this greatly enhances the CH-47F's ability to be deployed to distant locations.

They note that the CH-47F used in the India flight trials flew into India aboard a C-17 and was able to conduct a flight just hours after arriving.

Mi 26 is bigger Yet The CH-47 Chinook helicopter has been around for nearly 50 years, but 50 years later it is still an amazing aircraft. Here are a few of the things that make it amazing:
Twin 60 foot rotors give the helicopter amazing lift – it can haul up to 28,000 pounds of cargo either inside or attached to exterior hooks.
It can carry up to 33 seated passengers, 37 people total with crew. Given it’s cargo rating, you could cram on a lot more people.
It has two gas turbine engines producing nearly 4,000 horsepower to drive the rotors.
Just over 1,000 gallons of fuel on board give it a range of over 400 miles.
Lack of a tail rotor makes it more stable in windy conditions and also allows for a rear cargo ramp.
The rear cargo ramp makes certain things possible that would be impossible for just about any other aircraft. For example, the CH-47 can hover over water and a boat can drive right in for water extraction, like this:
