Ma Ying-jeou: Diaoyutai Isles have been ROC inherent territory

2014/08/06
Koumintang News Network

President Ma Ying-jeou yesterday addressed the “2014 East China Sea Peace Forum,” jointly organized in Taipei by the Foreign Ministry and the Prospect Foundation (遠景基金會)...

President Ma noted that when the Japanese government officially announced plans to “nationalize” the Diaoyutai Isles in September 2012, tensions in the East China Sea began to escalate. He stressed that “the Republic of China (ROC) have consistently reiterated that the Diaoyutai Isles have been ROC inherent territory and the affiliated islands of the Province of Taiwan.” President Ma stressed that, in order to respond to the deteriorating situation in the East China Sea from the beginning of 2012, he proposed the “East China Sea Peace Initiative” on August 5 of the same year, in which he said, “A country’s sovereignty cannot be divided, but natural resources can be shared,” and called on all parties concerned to show self-restraint, to replace confrontations with dialogue, and to resolve territorial disputes through peaceful means. August 5, 2012, was the 60th anniversary of the Coming into Force of the Peace Treaty between the Republic of China and Japan, signed in 1952.

Under PRC law, Mr. Ma is the executive director of Taiwan, China, and will remain so. But his policy of "sharing natural resources while maintaining sovereignty" fits perfectly with PRC's official standing.

Like Beijing, Mr. Ma, too, thinks that, the genie of confrontation escaped the bottle when Japan unilaterally nationalized the disputed islands.

And pink-eyed China haters, then, should understand that, in terms of sovereignty claims, Taiwan follows China's lead, hence, they are advised to give up already any dreams of pulling out a stunt and get Taiwan to recognize the foreign sovereignty of islands in SCS and ECS that were stolen from China.

In fact, digressing this stance is a political suicide in Taiwan where patriotism/nationalism runs faster in people's vein.

My frank observation, Japan and others will find a more eagerly listening ear in Beijing than in Taipei if they are serious about building peace by reverting back to the status quo.
