    Product Description

The Phoenix Project addresses both immediate and emerging operational threats to the M60 Main Battle Tank using a modular and flexible approach to improve shoot-on-the-move capabilities, as well as increased lethality, mobility and survivability. These upgrades are achieved at a low technical and operational risk and at a lower cost.

    Pre-Upgrade Status

Old fire control system (TTS), slow in engaging targets.
    105 mm Main gun.
Unable to acquire and fire on targets while moving.
Thermal sighting system is not stabilized.
Armour protection level is not suitable to the foreseeable threat.
Engine Power and suspension system overdue for upgrade.

    Post-Upgrade Status

Ability to acquire both moving and stationary targets.
High rate of first round hit probability.
    Improved protection and survivability.
    Improved mobility and maneuverability

    Upgrade Specifications

    Phoenix Shoot-On-the-Move Upgrade
True shoot-on-the-move capability, day/night target acquisition, and improved first round hit probability are achieved with Raytheon's Integrated Fire Control System (IFCS) upgrade.
    Phoenix Lethality Upgrade

Significant improvement in the firepower and lethality of the current M60 platform is achieved through the replacement of the M60 105-mm rifled gun with RUAG land Systems L50 120-mm smooth-bore Compact Tank Gun (CTG).

    Phoenix Mobility Upgrade

Improvements in M60 acceleration and cross-country capability are achieved with the mobility upgrade provided by L3 Communications.

    Phoenix Survivability Upgrade

Survivability is improved through the addition of the armor protection scheme for both the M60's turret and hull. The protection scheme can be reconfigured to changing threat conditions.

LEDS - Land Combat Defense System

LEDS 100 is an enhancement of the system that adds a wind sensor, an infrared jammer and two High Speed Directed Launchers (HSDL), one on each side of the turret. These can be used to employ countermeasures directly towards the threat rather than covering an entire sector. LEDS 200 represents a further evolution of the system and employs a signature management system ("stealth"), a threat acquisition and tracking system and active countermeasures. This configuration will be further enhanced with the introduction of "hard kill" missiles that can be deployed from the HSDL in addition to systems existing "soft kill" capabilities.

Saab Avitronics and Mowag introduced the Land Electronics Defense System (LEDS) at Eurosatory, installed on the Piranha III EVO armored vehicle. The system integrates various defensive capabilities, from signature management, through 'soft kill' by using countermeasures to 'hard kill' utilizing counter RPG interceptors. According to Saab, the LEDS 50 version of the system was ordered by the Dutch Army in 2005 for its CV-90 tanks and is under evaluation in several other countries. A version of the system designated LEDS 100 equipped with two high-speed countermeasure launchers deploying Galix family pyrotechnic countermeasures produced by Lacroix. The system was recently tested by Jordan's King Abdullah II Design & Development Bureau (KADDB), installed on a modified M-60.

Hard kill equipped LEDS 150 system configured with Mongoose hard kill missiles on the Piranha is scheduled to undergo live fire tests in Switzerland later in 2008. The Mongoose is designed to kill incoming High Explosive and HEAT projectiles at a distance of five meters from the protected vehicle. With integration and close association with Mowag, a subsidiary of General Dynamics European Land Combat Systems, LEDS is well positioned to provide an attractive ADS solution for all operators of Piranha based vehicles, including seven European countries, the Canadian Army, the US Marine Corps and US Army (Stryker). The company is optimistic about the chances of the system to be considered as candidate for the British FRES program, Saab Avitronics has committed to offer LEDS for possible selection as part of a possible future solution for the FRES program.

Of course Abrams still more powerful than Phoenix. I think old M-60 is useless against modern tanks and threats, but this upgrade turned it to a totally new tank.

This upgrade costs three or four times as the Jordanian upgrade costs, no one would consider this upgrade as it's not feasible. Jordanian upgrade costs 750000$ for an upgrade that makes M-60 Phoenix compatible with the NATO standards. Some other sources say it costs 420,538.61$.

We've paid 170m for modernization of 170 tanks but it was an emergency measure. Still waiting for Altay and Leopard2NGs to take their place :)

The only thing Pakistani tanks could take is the ERA, nothing else is compatible with Pakistani tanks, as this one represents the western tanks while Khalid MBT represents the eastern.

Both Alkhalid and Alzarrar have MIL 1553 databus, making them modular systems compatible with Western and Eastern subsystems, they already have a high percentage of Western systems from Germany, France, Italy etc.

    That's really interesting.
However, it still falls under the category of Western tanks, 4 crew members, M68 rifled 105mm gun, American designed and made engine, optics and electronics...etc, almost everything added to it is American except for the chassis.

I didn't say they aren't in par with Western tanks in terms of quality, I meant they are mainly based on Eastern doctrine of tanks designation, in terms of lower height, lighter weight, 125 mm main gun, 3 crews, auto loading system...etc.
