New carrier needs time to be ready

(Source: China Daily) 2014-09-26

The People's Liberation Army navy marked the second anniversary of the commissioning of the aircraft carrier CNS Liaoning on Thursday, but experts said more time is needed to hone its combat readiness.

The CNS Liaoning, a refitted Soviet-era carrier, was commissioned in Dalian, Liaoning province, on Sept 25, 2012.

The ship has engaged in research and training missions, and it continues to sail the oceans, PLA Daily said on its micro blog.

"We must be able to protect our territorial waters and win possible conflicts," Senior Captain Mei Wen, political commissar of the carrier, told the newspaper.

"While in the open seas, we must make sure that we are able to sail as far as we want and can safeguard our turf.

"We must be strong enough to maintain the nation's overseas economic interests and strategic channels."

The vessel has just completed its first maintenance stop at a Dalian shipyard, a process that lasted five months from mid-April, according to an earlier report.

The crew and pilots of the carrier-based J-15 fighter jets have been put through a succession of rigorous training programs and tests over the past two years.

The vessel's largest mission took place in December in the South China Sea. During a 37-day exercise, the carrier conducted more than 100 drills and training procedures designed to test the stress resistance of its structures, its sailing speed in deep water, its navigational capabilities and the reliability of its weapons and equipment.

It also took part in a formation drill with other Chinese ships and submarines, a move many observers believe indicates that a carrier battle group has taken shape.

However, it will take years for the CNS Liaoning to achieve full combat capability, said Zhang Junshe, a senior researcher from the PLA Naval Military Studies Research Institute.

The crews of the carrier and the other vessels and submarines, as well as the pilots, will have to learn to work effectively with each other, and this is likely to be a slow process, he added.

"This is understandable as the navy designated the ship as a platform for research, testing and training. It must have spent most of the past two years testing systems, finding defects and coordinating operations with aircraft.

"In addition, the limited number of aircraft in the PLA navy that are suitable for carrier-based operations also restricts the ship's training operations."

Wang Ya'nan, deputy editor-in-chief of Aerospace Knowledge magazine, said: "The basic functions of the CNS Liaoning's systems have been tested, so the next stage will focus on testing its combat capability and improving the pilots' skills.

I think that CNS Liaoning was always intended to be mostly a training ship, more than an operational carrier. It takes a tremendous amount of 'corporate knowledge' to operate aircraft carriers effectively and secondly, the Kuznetsov class was not really a full aircraft carrier design, the Russians designating her an, "aircraft carrying cruiser", even with China's modifications, she will only carry a small compliment of fighters, (24).

Kiev class was the aircraft carrying cruiser, while the Kuznetsov are considered full carriers, just not full sized carrier, not that different from the medium sized carriers operated by other countries. Of course with the limited amount of air wing on board, its role will be primarily restricted to air escort, and that severely limits the potential of a carrier group. I think China has long planned to operate full size carrier with Liaoning being merely a stepping stone.

Ugh..............At this rate, I feel like I am going to be so old (70+) by the time China has multiple nuclear-powered supercarriers in the Pacific Ocean. Probably be on a wheelchair while watching their debut into service.

No, you will NOT see the Chinese Navy, in whatever name in the future, as a true blue water navy. Your children may or may not see that.

China can build five carriers right now but if the PLAN sail with those five ships, there will be five capital disasters at sea. You must allow one crew to gain peacetime operational experience, which will require years beyond the average enlistment period, then disseminate what they know to the next crew, allow them to learn and refine flaws, and disseminate to the next crew, and so on.

And how many years did USA took to achieve a true blue water navy?

i'm sure it won't take that long. Probably by 2025 - 2030.

And how many years did USA took to achieve a true blue water navy?

Technically speaking, rather early. In 1801 the United States had sent 3 Naval Squadrons, which were aided by the Royal Swedish Navy's own frigate squadron to bombard and bring into conclusion the Barbary threat in North Africa.

The United States Navy proved itself as a capable international naval power early on in the game. Then again, you have to understand that it was, for a long time, infused with British maritime doctrine and culture, considering it was founded as an English colony. America thus inherited the military cadre of the Mother Country, the British Empire.

And here is a list in sequence of USN carriers...

Note the timespan between carriers constructed prior to WW II.

The US have nearly 100 yrs of carrier experience. And the Chinese members here believes the PLAN can achieve the same level in their lifetimes ?

The United States Navy is the only nation in the world to have real carrier warfare experience, as well. The Imperial Navy and the United States Navy practically wrote the strategies of carrier warfare during the deadly dance of Great Pacific War

Your big mouth know that because...? LOL Talking is something we don't do. We will let our action do the talking. Right now, since we haven't finish our building a new carrier, talk is cheap for us. When it comes to dedication and devotion to dominant in something we want to do, we WILL achieve our goal. Book it, my friend! LOL

No one can predict how the future will plan out, everything can possible happen when one look far into the future, doomsday scenario might or might not play out, great achievement can exceed or fall short from expectation, China naval brass can only plan ahead and prepare for the worse but they will never let a likely chance with deadly mishap from stopping China build up their blue water navy anchor by a aircraft carrier.

well,I agree with @gambit .most of the countries who are operating Carriers, they're doing it for decades.Carrier operations need extensive amount of experience.there will be crashes, lives will be lost.even USN,who're operating Carriers for nearly 100 years now, regularly experience this kind of incidents.technology made Carrier Operation a lot easier than the earlier times,so probably casualty will be quite less.but it is still one of the most complex.

I remember, only few days ago, some report surfaced that PLAN lost probably 2 crew who died when trying to land on carrier.Chinese members tried to twist the word that English media misinterpreted.but it is only normal.earlier days, fatality rate was much much more high.

some weird crashes, and not the most fatal one....

Typical Indian loser mindset. This is the type of mentality that make India a sick country and backward. Always fear of failure and question your ability to overcome obstacle. May I remind that that our determination had NEVER FAIL us.

China build up their blue water navy intended for their aircraft carrier to operate long into a foresee future, China obviously will be very carefully on how to speed up their learning curb with minimal risk of any deadly accident cause by human error operating the aircraft carrier.
