Chief Minister Siddaramaiah seems motivated. Let's see if he can translate his words into action.

Learn from the Chinese, says Siddaramaiah

Learn from the Chinese, says CM

“There is not even a single pothole in Dalian,” Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said.

After six days of China tour, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah returned here on Sunday, after attending a World Economic Forum, held in China. The CM had led a 20-member team, including senior officials, during his visit.

The Chief Minister, during his stay in China, had an interaction with the entrepreneurs and invited them to participate in the third Global Investors’ Meet, to be organised by the State government in 2014.

Addressing members of the Karnataka Engineers Forum (KEF) at the valedictory function of the two-day state-level meet on Sunday, Siddaramaiah said he spent half a day in Dalian checking roads there. “In Dalian and Shanghai, there are no potholes on the roads. We must appreciate their quality and we need to learn from it,” he added.

Siddaramaiah, who visited China to participate in the World Economic Forum meet, also praised the high-speed Shanghai Maglev Train, which is known as the world’s fastest commercial train. “I boarded the Maglev train to reach the Shanghai airport, which was more than 50 km away. This magnetic train took me to the airport in just six minutes, clocking a speed of 450 km per hour. People are able to save so much time,” he said.

The Chinese have surpassed Indians in science and technology, Siddaramaiah said, attributing it to their time-bound work practice and maintenance of quality.

“The World Economic Forum meeting was held at a convention centre constructed specifically in Dalian. They took just ten months to build it. Here, most of our time goes in the tender process. Then, once the construction time is exceeded, we spend more time on revision of estimates, finding contractors and all that,” he remarked.

“We are not inferior to anybody in the world. But we need will power to work like the Chinese,” Siddaramaiah said. He added that the quality of engineering has depreciated since Sir M M Visvesvaraya’s time.

KEF president M Nagaraj presented a memorandum, comprising their various demands like establishment of a technical training school at Visvesvaraya’s birthplace Muddenahalli, making his birthday a state government function, mandatory internships for engineering students and a school for training contractors and labourers, to the Chief Minister.

Rural development and panchayat raj minister H K Patil, urban development minister Vinay Kumar Sorake and water resources minister M B Patil were present.

Sought investments in infrastructure during China visit: Siddaramaiah

Karnataka sought overseas investments in the infrastructure sector and latest technology to improve productivity in the farm sector, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said Monday after returning from a week-long visit to China.

"As we need huge investments in infrastructure projects to grow our economy in double digit, we held a road show Sep 13 at Dalian on the investment opportunities in the state and policy initiatives to attract global investors," Siddaramaiah told reporters here.

Siddaramaiah, who returned Sunday, participated in the three-day annual meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF) from Sep 11 at Dalian in the northeastern Liaoning province.

"About 150 global firms from diverse sectors participated in our road show. Many of them evinced interest in investing in the state.

"We have invited them to attend the third Global Investors' Meet (GIM) here (Bangalore) in October 2014 to explore investments in infrastructure, manufacturing, healthcare, education, transportation, food processing and tourism," the chief minister said.

In a separate meeting with Israeli chief scientist Avi Hasson, Siddaramaiah sought Israeli expertise in drip irrigation and farming techniques to improve productivity in the state's farm sector.

"Israel has domain expertise in drip irrigation and developed advanced technologies to increase yields of many crops by making optimal utilisation of its limited land and other resources. I am glad to inform you that Hasson expressed keen interest in engaging with our state in research and development activities," Siddaramaiah said.

The state government has recently signed an agreement with the Israeli research and development (R&D) agency Matimop to share technology in diverse fields, especially agriculture.

"The visit provided an opportunity to meet top government and business leaders of other countries. It also helped us in gathering information on various development issues in China, which has experienced high growth during the last three decades since it embarked on the reform process in the early eighties," the chief minister pointed out.

In his meeting with WEF executive chairman Klaus Schwab, the chief minister highlighted the state's potential in the knowledge economy in view of the high growth in IT, aerospace and automobile sectors.

"Schwab has expressed interest to involve the state in the forum's various activities, which bring together business, industry, academia and policy makers in finding solutions to global problems," Siddaramaiah noted.

WEF managing director Robert Green Hill offered to facilitate investments in the state's farm sector from global firms under the forum's 'New Vision for Agriculture'.

A 14-member business delegation and a nine-member official team accompanied the chief minister for the China visit.

Among the global leaders and prospective investors the chief minister met included Finnish Prime Minister Jyrki Katianen, Maltese Prime Minister Joseph Muscat, Japanese Science and Technology Minister Hakubun Shimomura, Malaysia's multinational Q1 group chairman Vijay Eshwaran and Spanish wind energy major's chief international officer Carmen Becerril.

Impressed by China, Karnataka CM talks bullet train

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has returned impressed by the China growth story after a three-day tour of the country to attend a World Economic Forum (WEF) summit last week. He is asking engineers to build roads just like they do in China — that do not develop potholes.

An eight-minute, 50-km high-speed ride from Shanghai Central to Pudong International Airport in an electromagnetic train has got him thinking of a Bangalore-Mysore bullet train.

Siddaramaiah, who had earlier visited China in 2001, assessed at a press conference Monday the change the socialist country has undergone in the past 12 years.

"I will not say I was completely floored by what I saw but there is no doubt they have progressed fast. I have told engineers to look at how roads are built in China. Projects are time-bound, there is a vision. We also need that kind of vision. Saving time is saving money," said the Chief Minister who led a 25-member team to the Dalian WEF summit between September 11 and 13 .

"Nowhere did I see a pothole. It is not that we are not strong in government but we have to learn to execute projects like they do. We have to maintain high quality."

Comparing the Shanghai he saw in 2001 with the Shanghai of today, Siddaramaiah said the city had transformed dramatically.

Siddaramaiah said he had invited a Japanese delegation to study the prospect of building a high-speed rail link between Bangalore and Mysore.

He seems like a clever man.

Even if we don't like the USA, we do learn from them, whenever we can.

But the attitude of a lot of Indians regarding China, is to simply put their fingers in their ears, and repeat "India is more advanced than China in all fields".

Like this:

India is doing very well in advanced technologies... in 2 decades India would the technological powerhouse of world...

India will be the technological superpower of future.

CHina is 2 Generation or maybe even 3 generations behind India.

That is overstating the case. Forum debates which are necessarily adversarial for the most part are not the correct barometer of opinion. Most Indians I know remain very impressed by China & its achievements. There is plenty of admiration for what China has achieved in so short a time. However, the border issue being what it is and the differences on strategic imperatives of the two countries being what it is, you will get more combative replies. Not the full picture.
