NEW DELHI: With the 61st anniversary of the famed Kalashnikov AK-47 series around the corner, the Russian manufacturer of the world's best-known assault rifle announced that the latest AK-100 series will be manufactured in India.

The Russian arms company, Izhmash, will shortly issue a licence to an Indian private arms manufacturer with whom negotiations are at an advanced stage. Company spokesperson Alexander Xavarzin said assembling of the AK-103 will begin in a year's time and full-scale manufacturing would start once the technology transfer takes place.

The company hopes to sell the gun to various police and paramilitary forces in the country as well as the army. It will not be exported.

The popularity of the assault rifle can be gauged from the fact that originals account for only 8-12% of the total world sales of the Kalashnikov series - the rest are all Kalashnikov clones being manufactured in several countries, according to the Izhmash spokesperson.

Unlike the AK-47 rifle which has a wooden base, the new generation AK-100 series is much lighter and has a body made of plastic. Xavarzin said the plastic component makes it an all-weather rifle, well suited to Indian conditions where soldiers have to trek at high altitudes for a number of days at a stretch.

Any credibility in the above news item? If so then what does it mean for INSAS?

Anytime there is talk of licensed production, its for pretty large numbers..is the IA splitting the inventory between INSAS and the AK-100?

IA has placed no orders for the AK-100 series. The russians have given/are thinking of giving the contract to some private manufacturer. They are targetting the Police/Paramilitary forces along with the army. If the rifles are assembled here they'll come cheaper and maybe law enforcement agencies will find them attractive.

As for credibility, well TOI has mentioned the name of the russian company and its spokeperson. Whether to believe them or not is up to us.

IA migth not be going for the rifle, but if its manufactured here, we can use the knowledge gained to improve INSAS.

are you in the australian army? how did you get access to INSAS rifles?

the main reason of going 2wards AK-103 from INSAS is the reliability.During the Kargil conflict the rifle encountered some reliability problems in the very cold climate in which that conflict took place. Due to the cold weather, the rifle would jam occasionally and the polymer magazines would crack. There were also cases where the rifle would fire on full automatic, while in three-round burst fire mode.As the indian army is phasing out da unlicensed revrsed engineered copy of the famous Belgian FN FAL known as 1A SLR it needs a new service rifle.so whilst the INSAS is being improved they some punch rifle.in my point of view, the indian r just wasting money.try 2 improve ur indeginious INSAS instead of wstin money on others.insas can develop into a mature rifle and can prove it self like JF-17 has to.

Your Info on the INSAS rifle is almost a decade old, those problems have already and been fixed. kaargil was in 2000 your, this is 2009.

Army is now getting new Multi caliber rifles designed for the F-Insas program.

The AK-103 is for Para military and Police forces, who often patrol jungle areas, as well as combat insurgent forces. Also having a higher caliber rifle in stock can provide the troops with more options when fighting in different terrains

Stop Bashing Indian Gear every time you find the avenue and learn the facts, instead.

What about AK-74, The already version of Ak-47? Is AK-100 or AK-103 derivatives of AK-74? I know indirectly they will be of AK-47 but just wanna know it straight. Because in AK-47 and AK-74 some configration is totally different.

Would be glad to have an answer.

Excuse me please plz im not in anyway degrading or 'BASHING' Indian gear.India has made its first attempt for a domestically made rifle. It shud feel no shame if it hasnt lived upto their expectations.U must have heard the sayin "IF YOU WANT TO INCREASE YOUR SUCCESS RATE, DOUBLE YOUR DOUBLE RATE".

As of the AK-103,u claim that it will primarily use it for patrolin by para-military forces and police.Fine i agree with you.But ur army uses a very wide range of assault rifles(AK-101,AK-47,INSAS rifle,vz-58,AKM and Zittara).Plz elaborate.

INSAS rifle will be main weapon for the Indian army and ak will be use by mostly paramilitary or army in counter operation with insurgency .Having different arm have different choice for army to use for their convenient .:smitten:

Well, you are absolutely right, INSAS was the first domestic attempt.
and it did have problems. which came to light in the Kargil war.
But the Kargil war happened nearly a decade ago now.

Surely ,as the DRDO has reported someone has gotten around to correct what they did wrong. and the problems were fixed
Today Mk-2 versions of INSAS weapons have even been developed.

to your other question.

First of The AK-101, AK-47, VZ-58 AND AKM

Are all Kalashnikova's , and all of them use the 7.62x39mm. Which is a better round when combating militants, as well as dealing with guerrilla warfare.
older models lie the AK-47 and VZ-58, are still ther because they have never been replaced and lets face it AK's are very reliable.

The INSAS uses 5.56x45mm NATO round, which is more effective in conventional wars between nations. As it injures soldiers Instead of killing on the spot, forcing the enemy to commit its troops to healing or caring for its wounded, and also to retreat to save the lives of wounded comrades.

Insurgents dont care for Wounded and have used suicide tactics, using a kill on shot bullet like the 7.62 is more effective against them

The is the main reason for the F-INSAS program to use a Multi-caliber rifle, soldiers are being asked to go from frighting soldiers to fight two different types of enemy, and given the weapon that works best on only one.

(listen closely when he talks about the different Calibers)
(The weapon shown is most likely, a new Blup-up)

Para Military's primary task is to fight Insurgents making the AK the perfect choice for them.

Most armies have at least two different Caliber rifles in service. A Multi-Caliber replace the need to have different types of weapons.

The Zitarra is a Micro-travor used primarily by SPECIAL FORCES UNITS.
who prefer it for for its Small size and greater accuracy.
TRAVOR is considered one of the best rifles in the world.

AK-100 series are based upon the improvements made on the AK-74M.Folding synthetic stock, syntheticr furniture and other changes being the improvements on the AK-74M.AK-74 is a 5.45x39mm Assault Rifle while the AK-47/AKM is a 7.62x39mm assault rifle that's the main difference between them.

1)private arms manfuctarers wouldnt do this the OFB would govt. rules do not allow private arms manufacturers

2)i fired the AK 103 last month, great gun light ,more accurate than 47 and easy to add sights, red dot laser and torches, here in the US comapnies are selling out 5.56 AK's in polymer frame's
