Airshow is not just looking at aircraft and missiles, a variety of cutting-edge radar is also very eye-catching, the current China Air Show, China Electronics Technology Group Corporation 14 Institute has brought 7 new radar, not only In the fighters of the "longan" radar, compact and high performance airborne fire control radar - made KLJ-7A airborne active phased array radar is also the first public appearance.

KLJ-7A is a development of KLJ-7 mechanical scanning radar, which eliminates the former antenna and transmitter, preserves the latter's control system and display system, and upgrades the processor.

This improvement and the United States APG-63V2 active phased array radar is the same, the purpose is to maximize the existing radar with the versatility, simplify logistics, reduce costs and costs, from this perspective, KLJ-7A goal should be Domestic FC-1 Xiaolong fighter jets and Pakistan JF-17 fighter jets and the future development of type.

Phased array radar does not exist this problem. As the phased array radar emission source has many components, as long as the control of their phase, you can control the emitted electromagnetic wave to scan in all directions, and even can be divided into a number of firing unit group, composed of multiple directions of electromagnetic waves in different directions Scan to continuously track multiple targets. Like a group of people working together to find a thing, it is clear that more than a person looking to come much easier and faster.

Active phased array radar has been developed for two generations, the first generation of the use of relatively bulky brick T / R module, the system size and weight too large, F-15C modified APG-63V-2, the empty weight increased Nearly 500 kg, which for the FC-1 / JF-17 such a light fighter is almost unacceptable.

A new generation of active phased array radar uses a tile T / R module, 14 introduced KLJ-7A technical level and F-35's APG-81 radar equivalent, so it should be a tile T / R module , The system weight and volume to be effective control, more suitable for FC-1 / JF-17 such a light fighter.

According to fourteen experts, KLJ-7A air detection range of 170 km, which is a very surprising figure, to know KLJ-7A antenna aperture of about 600 mm, can be arranged T / R module should Not more than 1000, to achieve such a detection distance that the domestic T / R module in power, sensitivity, etc. have a greater breakthrough, it also means that JF-17 in the facelift of the KLJ-7A, its detection The distance has exceeded the Indian Air Force Su-30MKI.

According to relevant information, Su-30MKI equipped with BARS radar on the air target maximum detection distance of about 130 km, so JF-17 can rely on their smaller RCS, farther detection radar, the Soviet -30MKI achieve the first to find, take the lead Lock, the first attack.

In addition, KLJ-7A in addition to excellent air mode, but also have more ground mode, including Doppler beam sharpening, synthetic aperture imaging, etc., can support fighter with more ground attack capabilities, such as Fighters can detect targets in synthetic aperture mode, and then enter the target coordinates into the airborne satellite-guided bombs, to combat it.
In short, KLJ-7A display, indicating that the relevant Chinese units have mastered the airborne active phased array radar technology, not only enhance the combat capability of domestic combat aircraft, but also improve the domestic fighter in the international market competitiveness.

The Second Article on KLJ-7A
For the first time in 20 years, active antenna radar (AESA) for fighter aircraft is presented at the Zhuhai Air Show by a Chinese manufacturer.

Its reference, the KLJ-7A. Some of you will find it familiar and this is normal, since the Pakistan Air Force FC-1 / JF-17, designed by the 611 Institute in Chengdu, is equipped with A mechanical scanning radar known as KLJ-7 V2.

In a press conference organized by the NETET Institute of the CETC group on 31 October, its deputy director touched on this radar at AESA for fighter aircraft and several radars capable of tracing stealth aircraft.

"The KLJ-7A, which makes its first public appearance in this show, has a combat range of 170 kilometers," said WANG Hongzhe (王宏哲), "This range is equivalent to (that of the radar of) F-35, Is mainly carried out on a radar having a much smaller volume in comparison. "

When questioned as to whether the AESA radar of the last Chinese J-20 fighter aircraft is performing better than this one, the deputy director of NRIET smiled: "In your opinion ...? "

It should be noted that the figure of 170 kilometers in range of KLJ-7A should be obtained in Air-Air mode, on a standard target of a SER of 5 m².

Given its small size (~ Ø600 mm) and its official reference, it is more than likely that the KLJ-7A is developed for the Block III version of JF-17, which plans to replace its current radar with a radar at AESA . This information was later confirmed by another NRIET technical officer in an interview.

The KLJ-7A will thus offer approximately 55% additional detection distance to the upgraded Pakistani plane, giving a very interesting tactical advantage and will allow it to use other types of long range munitions.

Little is known about the new AESA radar, such as its weight, the average emission power, the MTBF or the type of materials (GaAs or GaN) used for MMICs, for example.

On the other hand, according to the same technical manager of NRIET quoted above, the AESA antenna of KLJ-7A includes "more than 1,000" T / R, which performs electronic scanning on 2 dimensions. It is also known that the radar can follow 15 targets and engage at least 4 simultaneously, against 10 and 2 for its predecessor with mechanical scanning. The radar also has at least 11 modes of operation including SAR imagery, Air-Sol and Air-Sea mode.

On these photographs previewed at the NRIET stand, there are three modules at the back of the radar - the power supply, the computer and the cooling cell. The antenna and computer module are liquid-cooled, as marked on the housing.

Most of the embedded radars in China, whether for fighter aircraft or AWACS, are developed by Institute 14 (NRIET), Institute 38 or Institute 607. The first two are subsidiaries of the Chinese electronics group ECCC, while the latter is a subsidiary of the aviation group AVIC.

The radars of J-10, J-11B and J-15 for example are designed by NRIET, and that of J-16 by Institute 607. If the rumors say true and the new radar of J-20 is actually developed The NRIET, we can probably learn more during this Salon of Zhuhai, where the presence of J-20 is now confirmed by the Chinese Air Force.

Yes it Will..
Now If we put this radar aside for a while...Block 3 will have definately an edge over Sukhoi MKI (until not upgraded to Super Sukhoi Standards).
All of the avionics, engine and the airframe will be new and superior to MKI.
And for the Radar it is "Soone PE Suhaga" It will boost JFT more.
Payload of Block three will be Increased and what I am seeing is will turn from a LIGHT fighter to MEDIUM weight fighter.
AESA, IRST, ASELSAN TP, HMD, EJ2000/WS-13A/RD93M, More fuel capcity all are the possible upgrades on block 3..
So Hope for the best.

Important point

if only radar is what makes the difference , why not install that in j -7

O.K than you detached the AESA Radar from su-30MKI
the difference is the Range of KLJ-7A is 170KM vs SU-30MKI radar130 KM.

Su30 mki will also progressively be upgraded with most modern AESA radar, new and better A2A missiles. This aircraft is a very good platform for future upgrades.
You will see these sukhois flying in the iaf for many decades to come.

guys we got a really good radar but we need an a2a missile which ranges from 120-150km atleast, with just sd10a or b nothing is a game changer even if jf17 got a very good radar

Will the KLJ-7A be built by PAC under licence?
