Kashmiri leadership, trade bodies boycott meeting with Rajnath Singh

Major trade bodies of Kashmir and prominent leaders of the Kashmir freedom movement have boycotted a meeting with Indian Home Minister Rajnath Singh who arrived here on a two-day visit on Saturday, sixteen days after the killing of a freedom fighter sparked large-scale violence in the valley.

Singh, who will hold a series of meetings with government officials and pro India leaders, is expected to try to soothe frayed nerves in the valley where at least 55 people have been killed in clashes between security forces and civilians protesting the killing of militant leader Burhan Wani.

Around 2,000 people, including children have been injured, most of them by pellet guns, fanning strong resentment against security forces.

The trade body officials said they decided to boycott as a number of such meetings have yielded no results in the past and “killings of Kashmiris have continued”.

Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industry President Mushtaq Ahmad Wani accused security forces of human rights violation.

He said the trade bodies have demanded that security officials should be made accountable for the killing of civilians and pellet guns banned.

Calling Burhan Wani anything but a freedom fighter who believed in violence and killing of innocents (including Kashmiri village sarpaches, teachers) is an insult to those who were real freedom fighters like Gandhi, Jinnah and Mandela.

Good going Pakistani Media.
