A Chinese aircraft manufacturer has produced an attack version of the L-15 jet trainer. Normally, the L-15 just carries a trainee pilot and an instructor. But the attack version has a pilot and a weapons systems officer. The L-15 is a 9.5 ton aircraft with a max speed of 1,000 kilometers an hour and a combat radius of 550 kilometers. Since it first flew four years ago, the L-15 has been offered to the Chinese armed forces and foreign customers, without much success.

The problem is the K-8, which is a smaller, cheaper Chinese jet trainer. The K-8 is a 4.3 ton, two seat aircraft. The trainee and instructor are replaced by a pilot and observer on combat missions. Max speed is 800 kilometers an hour. The K-8 entered service in 1994, and over 500 have been built. The aircraft can be fitted with a 23mm cannon, and carry nearly a ton of missiles and bombs. Egypt and Pakistan also use the K-8. The aircraft sells for $4-5 million each. The L-15 sells for more than twice as much, but carries about the same amount of weapons. The L-15 is touted as a more suitable trainer for pilots headed for high performance (like the Su-30, F-16 or J-10) aircraft. But so far, air forces have found it more economical to buy the K-8.

I am on the side that PAF and PAC should look towards shifting 12 K-8s being received directly from China in 1994 to Sherdil Team and assemble about 50 K-8s and continue its development with China on K-8 Block-IIs with composites, improved design with landing gears like JF-17s and DSI, better avionics with Radar and FLIR and better engine with IFRP.

INSHA ALLAH this can be possible only by the Grace of Almighty ALLAH. Ameen.

AIRSHOW CHINA: CATIC signs deal for 12 L-15 trainers

Afterburner higher thrust engine delivers to China for L-15. That will gives L-15 advanced trainer a very good thrust to weight ratio. L-15 can never weight 9.5 tons. That will be near F-16 block 52 or J-10B fighter weight. Essentially making it a medium weight fighter jet. L-15 advance trainer shall weight around less than 7tons. 6.7 tons will be the precise weight.

Ukraine conveys first engines for L-15 trainer airplane to China

Finally, L-15 has a very good potential in export market. A lot of customers with limited fund for their small Airforce are eyeing this L-15 for their future use. The fact, L-15 havent even commission for PLAAF and has already bag an export shows how well it will fare in future.

1 May 10, 2011 , the Zambian Ministry of Defence Permanent Secretary the Rose-Salukatula , Air Force deputy commander Muliokela line CATIC Sun Zhiwei, deputy general manager, CATIC vice president of sales given Lee, accompanied by Bank of China Hongdu visit our company.

Rose-Salukatula his party visited the Hongdu L15 advanced trainer aircraft development and production site, and listened to the special report . During the visit, the party, who had a strong interest expressed L15 advanced trainer, asked in detail about the L15 Higher machine development and production as well as performance of the aircraft, some of the staff happily got into the cockpit and experience the cockpit environment. The Rose-Salukatula L15 Higher machine is a good aircraft, and through today's visit, she felt gain a lot, and hope that in the future development to strengthen cooperation with Hongdu . (Li Hui)

Yeah! It was better for PAC and CAC to introduce the Block-II version of this K-8.

L-15 bag its second international customer while JF-17 after introduced into service for almost 3 years still has not bag any foreign customer yet.

Venezuela adquirió aviones de entrenamiento de combate L15 - Venezuela Defensa

Because the problem is engine, and there is a price difference as well. Poorer nations can't afford JF-17 like aircraft and whatever stuff it comes with for them L-15 [dual variant] requirements could be sufficient. The current economic turmoil has engulfed entire world so 25m is costly from perspective of african and other poor nations compared to a 15m price even that is alot.

L-15 is an aircraft project fully supported and endorse by China and has no problem exporting it even the engine is from Ukraine. Even the turmoil occurring in Ukraine did not deter foreign buyer from buying it. As China fully assure the source of engine supply.

JF-17 is a 50/50 project between China and pakistan. I can be sure the red tape for getting 2 countries to agree on export is complicating.

I don't see any complications with the exports simply put african countries are not even considered 3rd world but 4th their economics are struggling, their military budgets are less than $600m how do you expect them to buy a squadron or even 14 Fierce Dragons. Ukrainian crisis is as bad that they can even shift the engine development to China as a cop production and get benefit. It sounds foolish though without home made engine selling a Major Product like FC-1 compared to a trainer like L-15. Both aircraft have a separate profile I don't think both can be compared it is simply a the less expensive aircraft making its way to the struggling poorer market customers. Had WS engine been ready and in use with better life cycle, FC-1 would have already been exported or deals penned down and not just interests shown.

Plus there is a boatload of competition

They are not comparable to L-15 advanced trainer. L-15 can pull 8.5+/- G, supersonic speed of at least 1.4 Mach after fitted with Afterburner AL-222 engine. None of those mention can do that. In fact, L-15 after fitted with combat avionics is able to carry out fighter/combat duties. While most of the aircraft in your list can carry out CAS only.
