K-4 submarine-launched ballistic missile test on January 31
Published January 23, 2017
SOURCE: ENS

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is readying for a fresh trial of its long range nuke-capable submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) K-4 from an underwater platform in the last week of this month.

If things go as per the programme, defence sources said the indigenously built most powerful underwater missile having a strike range of around 3,500 km will be test fired from a submerged pontoon, which is almost identical to a submarine, on January 31. Though the missile has been designed to be launched from a depth of 50 metres, this time the scientists are planning to fire it from the undersea platform nearly 20-30 metre deep in the Bay of Bengal.

A defence official said while the preparation for the test is going on in full swing, tracking equipment has been moved in ships to be placed at test location and point of impact. Having a length of 12 metres and diameter of 1.3 metres, K-4 missile weighs around 17 tonne and is capable of carrying a warhead of around two tonne. Basically a ballistic missile, the K-4 combines the aspects of both cruise and ballistic missile, which use multiple-stage rockets to exit the atmosphere and re-enter in a parabolic trajectory.

The country’s first indigenous nuclear submarine INS Arihant has already been inducted in the Indian Navy and this submarine will be equipped with the K-series missiles. Apart from the 700-km range K-15, renamed as B-05, which has been successfully test fired several times and K-4, India has one more missile in the series. SLBM K-5 having a striking capability of over 5,000 km is under development. All the K-series missiles are faster, lighter and stealthier. The missiles are far more difficult to tackle as they skulk clandestinely undersea and manoeuvrable thus minimising the chance to be shot down by the enemy.

Apart from the K-series missiles, India has the submarine version of BrahMos supersonic cruise missile in its arsenal to boost its second-strike capabilities. The DRDO is also developing the air version of K-series missiles which can be fitted with fighter aircraft. The DRDO is expecting a successful trial of the missile as it would strengthen the country’s position in the exclusive club of six nations including Russia, USA, France, Britain and China which have the capability of firing missiles from air, land and undersea.

Looks like you don't read. It says it's a pontoon this time.

Where is pontoon mentioned in the article? However, Its always been a pontoon as a launch platform when it comes to Indian tests of past. When are they going to actually mate the missile with the sub, like Pakistan have demonstrated?

So Indian claims of K-4 being already deployed on Arihant have been proven wrong.

There.
They will mate it when they think they have validated all parameters as it's a newer missile.

These pontoon based tests have been going on for a while now. How about the other K-series which have been tested with pontoons, are they now cleared to be integrated with Subs? Its bit strange that India keeps on testing these missiles from static pontoons where the real purpose is to be launched at deep sea from a sub to achieve a credible second strike.

The K15s are in Arihant now and have been test fired from it. Search google there is a video too.

And just to clear any confusion the tests from a pontoon is identical to a sub as the technology used in both cases to propel the missile out of water is same.

K4 has been tested before and will be tested now from pontoon. Once all the parameters are achieved then the missile will be tested from Arihant. That's when it will enter into the hands of strategic forces command and they will conduct active user trails and tests from a sub.

So Indian claims of K-4 being already deployed on Arihant have been proven wrong.

Is your sub now on active deployment with Babur 3 missile?

There is no video of K-4 or any Missile being fired from Arihant.
Infact there is no video of Arihant being actually sailing in the sea.

I said K 15 not K 4. There won't be any video of Arihant in sea. None have. Your best bet is pictures. I have not seen a Virginia class in sea video that too in active duty.

I have raised this many times over on this forum. There are no videos available on youtube. Please link us if you have any, where the missile, of any K series have been fired from Arihant or any Indian subs.

For the other bold part. Its a wrong assumption. Pontoons are used to test the actual missile and other parameters associated with it. BUT to mate the missile with sub and launch it, is completely different ball game. Consider this same as having land based missiles on TEL and test them using TEL. This is also an area where India critically lags behind, the TELs for its Agni series.

So you think a cruise missile launch to be same as ballistic missile?.

I mean, yea, both goes whoooosh.

Infact there is no video of Arihant being actually sailing in the sea.

Glad that India still knows how to keep secrets.

where is the video of babur being fired from pakistani submarine ?
