Israel Shipyards is expanding the SAAR class of missile boats, extending the range from missile boats into ‘Mini Corvette’ class vessels. The new class is addressing the growing requirements of Israel and other nations in extending maritime control and sovereignty far from their territorial waters. Defense-Update reports from IMDEX 2013.

Visit IAI at IMDEX 2013
The Israel Navy is required to expand the security and responsibility over much larger area while doing that with an ageing fleet of Saar 4, 4.5 missile boats and 5 corvettes. If only to maintain the numbers of boats in service, the Israel Navy will require several new vessels in the coming years. Many of these vessels are becoming obsolete – some of the oldest missile boats in service – INS Atzmaut (Independence) and INS Nitzahon (Victory) are reaching 35 years in service – an age considered the end of service life for such boats. Therefore, new platforms will be required in the near future. Through the years the Navy acquired 20 Saar 4/4.5 vessels, but the cash-strapped service could not afford to buy larger vessels, and, therefore limited the procurement of the larger Saar 5 corvettes to the three vessels built in the U.S. funded by Washington’s Foreign Military Sales (FMS).

The new Saar S-72 unveiled by Israel Shipyard at the recent IMDEX event in Singapore fits between the Navy’s existing Saar 4.5 missile boats, and Saar 5 corvettes. Through the years Israel Shipyards have built 33 Saar 4 and 4.5 class missile boats; 20 were delivered to the Israel Navy over the years. With the new Mini Corvette the shipyard hopes to expand it’s offering to meet the evolving requirements, of the Israel Navy, as well as of international customers overseas.

For Coast Guards and non-military operations the S-72 is a new platform that better fits the category of Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV). For naval applications the same 800-ton vessel can be finished as a versatile ‘Mini Corvette’. Both are highly applicable to asymmetric warfare at sea, providing sufficient space for command and control, accommodation for special task forces on military or counter terror missions, or supporting rapid response or rescue operations. The large hangar stores a medium size helicopter and UAVs. The adjacent 15 meter long flight deck supports medium size helicopters up to AW139 class. The vessel is configured with loading crane, storage and berth deploying rubber boats / RHIB’s or unmanned surface vessels.

The military version of SAAR S-72 corvette will be able to carry the latest weaponry required for a modern navy

In the military configuration the Saar-72 will offer a significant upgrade over the current Saar 4.5 – in performance and combat capabilities. Applied with a slanted stealth finish, recessed exhausts, and radar integrated mast, designed to host both emitters (radar, EW) and passive sensors (ESM) without interference. The vessel can accommodate the IAI Elta EL/M-2258 Advanced lightweight Phased Array (ALPHA) multi-mission naval radar, designed for blue water and littoral warfare support. This radar was selected by the Israel Navy for the upgrading of existing vessels as well as for its new combatants. The vessel can carry different weapons, including IAI’s Barak 8 type missiles, various anti-ship missiles and precision surface attack weapons. The naval configuration is also fitted with an advanced naval gun.

Saar 72 type vessels are designed with spacious accommodation to 50 crewmembers plus 20 additional accommodations for passengers or special troops. It is equipped to sail on a 21 day missions, with mission range above 3000 NM.

Sources at the Israeli shipyard said they can complete the design and construction of the lead S-72/Saar-72 ship within a period of 30 months, and produce follow-on vessels in eight months. The shipyard can build the 72m’ vessel with its current facilities, but to accommodate the 85 meter version some expansions will be necessary.

Rafael presents :Controlled weapon stations for launching long range Spike Missiles

Rafael will unveil its controlled weapon ststions that enable the launch of its long range Spike missile.

This will happen at the Maritime Combat Systems Exhibition in Singapore

Rafael Advanced Combat Systems will present this week at the IMDEX exhibition in Singapore a variety of systems and capabilities in the fields of attack, location and control of naval systems.

For the first time Rafael will display in this exhibition several new weapon positions, from the Typhoon Weapon Positions family:

Integrated Weapon Position with Spike (Tamuz) NLOS missiles for range up to 25 km,
Integrated Weapon Position with Spike (ER) missiles range up to 8 km,
30 mm Typhoon Weapon Position
About Rafael Spike Missiles family: These are precise tactical missiles with electro-optic homing head, that can be launched from land, sea and air platforms. These missiles are used by IDF and many countries in the world.

About Controlled Launch Positions: These are stabilized and lightweight systems, that can be installed on various sea platforms. These systems are an extension of the existing variety of remotely controlled sea and land weapon positions, enabling execution of various actions without exposing the combat soldiers.

Rafael will also present at the Singapore Exhibition the following systems:

SPOTLIGHT N System - an advanced maritime electro-optic system for locating sources of fire.
TOPLIGHT HD System - an advanced HD-quality electro-optic payload system.
Singapore is an important market for the Israeli security industries. It does not disclose details about its defense deals, but several years ago there were news on purchase of early warning and intelligence airplanes from Israeli Aircraft Industries. The systems were installed on the G-550 executive aircraft like the ones serving for similar missions of Israeli Air Force.

According to foreign sources Singapore bought in the past other weapon systems from Israel, including fast boats for shores control.

Many visitors are expected at the exhibition from all over Asia and other areas of the world. This emphasizes the importance of this exhibition in times of defense market competition at its peak.

Typhoon Expanding into Multi-Role Weapon Stations

TYPHOON-MLS-NLOS.jpg

RAFAEL is unveiling at IMDEX 2013 a new missile-carrying variants of the Typhoon marine stabilized weapon system. Defense-Update reports from IMDEX 2013.

Two systems – MLS-ER and MLS-NLOS represent two modular evolutions of the combat proven Typhoon, enhancing the operational capabilities of small and medium naval crafts, responding to evolving requirements of navies facing new asymmetric threats.

The MLS utilizes the standard Typhoon pedestal, electronics and control systems providing a complete naval missile and gun system.

//
RAFAEL’s latest variant of Typhoon Stabilized Naval Gun carries the ATK Mk 44 Bushmaster II automatic cannon, which is currently considered the optimal weapon for small boats. Over 350 such systems have been delivered and are operational with 15 navies worldwide. This design features well over 90% commonality with the U.S. Navy’s fielded Mk 38 incorporating the same electronics and man-machine interfaces. The Typhoon adds significant capability for shipboard defense against small, fast, and agile surface threats.

The company has recently launched an upgrade program, enabling Typhoon operators, using the M242 Bushmaster cannon to upgrade their Typhoon mounts to the more powerful Mk44 cannon. This cannon fires all 30mm x 173mm NATO Standard ammunition and is also capable of firing the new programmable airburst munitions (ABM). The mount also features two options for a Coaxial Mounted Machine Gun – either the M2HB 0.5 caliber or a 7.62mm machine gun with remote charging capability built-in. The new mount has a magazine capacity of over 400 ready 30mm rounds, compared 200x25mm rounds in the current configuration. Retaining the M242, the new mount will more than double ammunition capacity to 500 rounds.

is this anything with syria acquiring anti ship Russian missiles?

is this anything with syria acquiring anti ship Russian missiles?

No. The Israeli navy has been already looking for some new ships before Syria acquired new ASM's.

It looks like a small scale of s'aar 5 ship

The problem with the Saar 5 was top weight / instability cause by packing too much onto a small hull (i.e. 16 SSM, 2x32 Barak, Phalanx CIWS or 76mm gun, several radars and 3 gun/missile directors as well as ECM gear and a helicopter with hanger and ASW tubes and sonar). This new designs seems to take that lesson well.

A new generation of the SAAR Class - The "SAAR S-72" Corvette

The new design of the modern SAAR S-72 is available now.
This new generation of the famous SAAR class Fast Attack Mini Corvettes, is a larger vessel.

It is a multipurpose vessel at the length of 72 meter and full displacement of about 800 tons.

As the existing Naval vessels of Israel Shipyards, the new corvette will also reach the speed of above 30kn with an extended endurance.
The SAAR S - 72 can operate a medium size marine helicopter.
It also supports unique possibilities of utilizing Special Forces units.

The main improvements of the SAAR S - 72 include:
Significant upgrade of the SAAR 4.5 combat capabilities
Major improvement of signatures
State-Of-The-Art weapon and electronic systems (can be tailor-made to customer specific requirements)
The SAAR S-72 is offered as a missile corvette or it can be proposed in an OPV version.

Storm, Tempest.

So Israel has yet to transition from "Corvettes" to the accepted Naval designation of Frigates?

No, they simply don't have frigates (yet).

The largest is Sa'ar 5 (Hebrew: tempest‎ סער), which is a class of corvette
Displacement: 1,227 tonnes (full load), 1,075 tonnes (standard)

Sa'ar 4.5 (Hebrew: סער 4.5‎) is a class of Israeli Sea Corps missile boats designed and built by Israel Shipyards Ltd. as an improved and stretched Sa'ar 4-class missile boat.
Displacement:
498 tonnes (full load - Aliya subclass)
488 tonnes (full load - Hetz subclass)
430 tonnes (common standard)

The Sa'ar 4 or Reshef class missile boats were built at the Israel Shipyards and based on Israeli Navy designs grounded in accumulated experience derived in the operation of "Cherbourg" (Sa'ar 3) class.
Displacement: 415 tons (450 tons loaded)

Sa'ar 3 class ("Cherbourg") is a class of missile boats built in France at the Cherbourg shipyard based on Israeli Navy modification of the German Navy's Jaguar class fast attack craft.
Displacement: 210 tons (250 tons loaded)

The 12 Cherbourg boats reached Israel unarmed in late 1969 and at first were only armed with 40-mm cannon and machine guns in Israel. In this configuration they became later retroactively the the Sa'ar 1 class.
At the beginning of the 1970s took place a re-armament with Gabriel rockets and partly with 76-mm Oto Melara cannon on the foredeck as well as four torpedo tubes, re-equipment to the Sa'ar-2 class.
Beginning in the 1980s the Gabriel rockets were replaced totally or partly by Harpoon missiles. Apparent thereby also a torpedo tube was removed. Half of the boats became so reequipped to the Sa'ar 3 class.

Compare Omani corvette Qahir, Singapore's Victory class corvette, Turkey's Kılıç-class FAC

well looks gooood to me but it is not as deadly as europen ships

Why not? I see 76mm gun, 2x4 Harpoon, 2x8 Barak SAM, chaff/decoy launcher, helicopter+hanger (and it probably can take ASW tubes and a few small caliber remote HMG or cannon)
