NEW DELHI: Pakistan has lost almost half of its sophisticated long-range maritime snooping and strike capabilities in just one well-targeted jihadi attack on naval base PNS Mehran in Karachi that ended on Monday after a 15-hour gun-battle which left 10 security persons and four attackers dead. At least two of the five P-3C Orion long-range patrol aircraft, supplied to Pakistan Navy by the US, were destroyed in the attack.

The irony is stark. Pakistan got the P-3C Orions, packed with radars and weapons like the E-2C Hawkeye 2000 airborne early-warning suites and anti-ship Harpoon missiles, from the US as part of the around $15 billion military aid in the name of the global war on terrorism over the last decade.

India cried foul, holding that Orions as well as other weapons like F-16s were clearly meant for conventional warfare, not counter-terrorism. Al-Qaida or the Taliban, after all, did not have an air force or a navy. And now, in a role reversal, the Pakistan Taliban has destroyed at least two, if not more, of the four-engine turboprop Orions, probably seeing them "as legitimate targets".

"It's quite a significant loss for Pakistan Navy...almost 50% of its long-range maritime patrol capabilities has suddenly been taken out," said an Indian Navy officer. As per Pakistan-watchers here, Pakistan is slated to get a total of 10 upgraded Orions, with eight of them supposed to arrive by 2012.

"They had five as of now, two older ones which were upgraded and three newer ones. If the two destroyed in the attack are the newer platforms, the loss will be even more significant," said another officer.

India, of course, has been wary of the Orions for quite some time. With "a loiter time" extendable to over 10 hours, they pose a significant threat to Indian warships in the entire Arabian Sea due to their long radius of operations. An Orion, which can cost well upwards of $100 million depending on its configuration, incidentally can also carry nuclear weapons in its internal bomb bay under the front fuselage.

Indian Navy, in fact, had pushed for installation of the Israeli Barak anti-missile defence systems on 14 of its frontline warships like aircraft carrier INS Viraat, destroyer INS Mysore and stealth frigate INS Shivalik to counter the Harpoon and Exocet missiles acquired by Pakistan.

There are lessons for India to also learn from the jihadi attack to ensure its precious air and naval assets are protected in a much better manner. IAF, incidentally, came up with its own version of special forces, the Garuds, in 2004-2005 after facing fidayeen (suicide) attacks on its crucial airbases like Srinagar and Awantipora. "Security of our airbases should be further upgraded," said an officer.

The US had also offered to sell eight P-3C Orions, manufactured by Lockheed Martin, to India under the foreign military sales programme some years ago but the deal did not materialize.

Instead, India is now going for 12 Boeing-manufactured P-8I long-range maritime reconnaissance aircraft for around $3.1 billion, with the first slated to arrive in early-2013.

At present, the Navy is making do with five Russian-origin upgraded Ilyushin-38s and eight ageing Tupolev-142M maritime patrol aircraft, backed by a fleet of Dornier-228s, to keep tabs on the entire Indian Ocean region.
i got this in times of india newspaper . can any body confirm it that pakistan navy on the way to acquire 10 more upgraded p3c orione craft in coming 2012 ?

man if it is true than it is Good news I also read Pakistan is also going to ask for 2 more PC 3 Orions so it can replace the destroyed and also these upgraded ones I also have a question that does China make these kind of Aircrafts I mean similar to these type of planes

means like if it is whatever written on TOI article ,or claimmed by itself indian navy official,,seems like true and great for pak navy.. because it has lot of weightage ,ofcourse claimed by indian navy ,who has always keeping on eye on pak navy and their future devlopment

i dont know abt wt we have or not or may be they might be running such type plane progr.... .but yes ofcourse we r more vulnaberal than ur sea regione.so might be we have ..but can any navy officer related member confirm this news thank u

Pakistan had ordered 7 Orions in 2006.

One was delivered in 2007..another in Novemeber 2009 and another two were delivered in Jan 2010...taking the total to 4.
These aircrafts delivered were not new ones but older P-3Bs upgraded to P3C/hawkeye status.

Out of these four.. two were destroyed day before yesterday.

Pakistan already had 3 P-3 Orions from before(acquired in 90s..older models)..out if these one had crashed 1999 in Balochiatan.

Hences as of now Pakistan has 4 P3 orions(2 recently acquired and two old) left in its inventory ..while 3 more are on order

Doesn't matter... We lost good men and equipment that is scarce

Yes PN will buy more and instead of using them to safe guard sea frontiers, let the terrorists destroy them.
It was absolute shameless what happened on PNS Mehran. 2 terrorists got away two terrorists blew them self up and 2 were shot down by hundreds of commandos.

U mean to say that there were only 6 terrorists who did all that damage and withstood the pak assault for 16 hrs
Who were they actually ,
were they local recruits of US Navy Seal team 6 looking at the level of training they had

Balony, the P3Cs are fitted standards for use as Maritime Patrol Aircraft for ASW/ASuW i.e. no E2C Hawkeye 2000 AEWC equipment .

In addition to the MPA version, in December 2006, the Pakistan Navy did request three excess P-3 Orion aircraft equipped with Hawkeye 2000 AEW systems from the US
Pakistan offered AEW Lockheed Martin P-3C Orions -18/12/2006-Washington DC-Flight International

However, this post-dates the order/request for the 8 P-3C Orion MPA's by 2 years and as far as I know none of the P-3C based AEWC aircraft have been delivered to Pakistan yet.

You may never know that some of them were actually captured alive and are being kept away from the media for interogation purposes. Remember, initially, twelve to fifteen armed men reported by media. Can anyone believe that with Malir river side cordoned off from the outside by rangers and police backed up by helo's that anyone could have escaped????

Let us wait and see how it pans out -- I have a hunch that intelligence has six or seven terr. in their custody alive or injured.

ya but in that article its written like by 2012 pakistan navy will get 10 upgraded ones if its right ,like from that article its seems like to much weightage abt the information of that 10 p3c orione so its good for pak navy ,as well its not the offensive weapone .and americans like to give to much defensive weapons to any part of the world to keep both side in the game under us umbrella so called pentagon policy .

PAKISTAN should cancel the all its pending and future military deals with US and direct all its energy and effort towards Chinese equipment and share all the technologies pakistan have from all over the world with china to make much more sophisticated weaponary.

If thats true than its a bad move by GOP.It will end the creditability of suspect, what is the guarantee that he is capture during operation.

This is indeed a serious dent in our naval capability and will affect in particular our anti-submarine operations in Pakistani territorial water, losing US$72 million in one night is indeed a huge loss but some of the posts above wooing the terrorists for their ability to stand against hundreds of commandos compels me to make some much needed corrections.

In an ambush situation, surprise and cover are force multipliers, the terrorists had both. They had already done their damage to the P-3C before the QRF responded, 3 minutes after the first explosion. Then they split up into groups of two and took over buildings, and everyone knows for the troops outside, clearing a building is a dangerous task. A single man with an assault rifle in a building, particularly a multi-story building is as effective as a fortress because he has cover but when you make a move for the building, your in the open. Anybody remember Taj hotel in mumbai attacks ?(That's for you Archie). Robert Taber in his book "War of the flea" accurately describes guerrilla warfare as follow:
"The insurgents act as the flee and the state as a dog, the flea uses it's smaller size to it's advantage, biting where it hurts most and getting it's blood, it moves before the dog can scratch, only to bite somewhere else".

P-3C is probably one of our most important naval assets, it would be pure foolishness to under-estimate it's importance as you did.
