PressTV - Iran Navy rescues Pakistani vessel
The Iranian Naval forces have rescued a Pakistani vessel after receiving a distress signal from the troubled boat in the Sea of Oman.
An Iranian Navy's special operation team was on an escort mission for a commercial ship when it received a request for help from the Pakistani vessel, IRNA reported Saturday.
The team then rushed to the help of the vessel once it ensured the safety of the ship being escorted.
The United Arab Emirates-bound Pakistani vessel had encountered an emergency situation following engine failure and bad weather conditions, and was wandering in the Sea of Oman approximately 76 kilometers (47 miles) from the southern Iranian port city of Jask.
The Iranian Naval forces tugged to safety the Pakistani vessel with 24 people onboard -- including 23 Pakistanis and an Iranian.
According to the Maritime Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC) in Iran's port city of Bandar Abbas, a US carrier was also sailing near the same spot at the time, but left the area despite having noticed the urgent condition of the Pakistani vessel.
The Iranian Navy is also involved in anti-piracy missions in the Gulf of Aden, guarding Iranian and foreign vessels sailing in international waters.
The Gulf of Aden -- which links the Indian Ocean with the Suez Canal and the Mediterranean Sea -- is an important energy corridor, particularly because Persian Gulf oil is shipped to the West through the Suez Canal.
In May, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) hailed Iran's anti-piracy efforts as effective.
