Iran’s Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani has congratulated the leader of Pakistan’s Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Nawaz Sharif, on his party’s landmark victory in the country’s parliamentary elections.

In a Wednesday message to Sharif, set to become Pakistan's next prime minister, Larijani said the successful parliamentary elections in Pakistan and the legal transfer of power to the PML-N showed the Pakistani people’s confidence in the party and its leader.

“The massive presence and participation of the Pakistani people in this vote indicate the existence of great political will among the Pakistani people to determine their own fate, and is tantamount to a strong guarantee for regional peace and stability,” Larijani pointed out.

He expressed hope that parliamentary relations and interaction between Iran and Pakistan would improve in the future in line with the national interests of both nations.

The Iranian Majlis speaker also wished the Pakistani people and government success and prosperity.

Pakistan held elections for 272 directly elected seats of the National Assembly on May 11. An additional 70 seats - 60 for women and 10 for non-Muslims - will be allocated on the basis of a party’s share in the directly elected seats.

According to unofficial results, former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) won most of the seats in the National Assembly.

About 86 million people were eligible to vote in the May 11 elections.
