ISLAMABAD: Is the MQM a political group or a gang of terrorists, questions a joint investigation report prepared by intelligence and security agencies of the country into the targeted killings and lawlessness in Karachi.

The report framed by the ISI, Interior Ministry, IB, Sindh Police, Special Branch and Pakistan Rangers in May 2009 was formally presented to the Senate chairman on Tuesday by ANP Information Secretary Zahid Khan.

“Who are these deserting rats, what do they want, how do they treat places like Kashmir, Pakistan and Karachi, why do they kill, why do they promise to send dead bodies, whom do they serve by heightening linguistic feelings, why do they target transformers and leave people to roast in heat, why do they burn transport facilities, why do they target security personnel, why do they torture people and pump bullets into public servants,” questions the 64-page report.

“Why did their (MQM) bullets take lives of SHOs Bahadur Ali and Imdad Khatian, DSP Bashir Ahmed Noorani, five relatives of DSP Nisar Khawaja, DSP Tanoli, SDM Muhammad Nawaz Khushk, journalist Muhammad Salahuddin, Azim Ahmed Tariq, Zohair Akram Nadeem, Pir Pagaro’s son-in-law Salim Malik, KESC Chairman Malik Shahid Hamid? And how a renowned scholar, chairman of the Hamdard Foundation and ex-Sindh governor Hakim Muhammad Saeed was killed,” the report further asks.

“It is a destructive instrument in the hands of its highly whimsical supremo, the one and only Altaf Hussain,” says the fact sheet on the MQM.

Exclusive property: The report said the government was obligated to explain who had turned Karachi, its citizens, its hospitals, parks, roads and avenues, storage houses, police stations and assembly houses into exclusive property; who were the people who never started a single development project in Karachi but did every thing to destroy the Karachi Municipal Corporation by controlling it during 1987-92 and the provincial government during 1990-92.

The report also mentions terrorism in Karachi on “Hitler’s footsteps”, “anti-state and anti-media activities of the MQM”, “its Indian connection” and the economical damage due to the party’s forced strikes. “But all this will require a review of the thoughts propagated by Hitler 65 years ago and the resemblance that Altaf has with the Nazi leader,” it added.

“The party’s first major action against political rivals came in the Pakistan Steel Mills in 1990 when a number of its men were kidnapped. They were taken to torture cells in Landhi and Korangi. Since then torture and murder of army officers, navy functionaries and a whole range of other people has become a routine,” said the report.

It added that the government has repeatedly asked the MQM to close its training camps in India and call back Javed Langhra and others to the country. “Altaf and his party responded that levelling such allegations against the party was not only a crime but also a violation of the security of the country,” the report added.

MQM spokesman Wasay Jalil was unavailable for comment when Daily Times tried to contact him.

MQM is just not involved in target killing, all parties whether it be PPP, ANP or MQM are all ganging up on each other. we see loses on both sides, in 90s there was gang war between PPP and MQM. it was not MQM it was ANP who brought the weapon culture to karachi in the first place, it was ANP and PPP that started ethnic divisions in karachi, PPP in karachi doesnt want any urdu speaker to become the member in its party, MQM just came into being as a result of those ethnic isolation to safeguard the targetted majority in karachi.

i am not siding any party and i must say all political parties should go to hell.

if you call MQM terrorists, PPP respect can be more elevated then just being labelled robbers, thaggas, sharabis..

you people post every now and then the threat karachi has due to talibans, to engage with militants u need to be properly armed.

Have you ever read the history of demographic change of Karachi and how it created insecure parties? Not surprising that amnesia - which affects most people - makes you define the problem only in the short term and forget how Karachi bred the MQM.

A group - identifying itself as an ethnic one - claimed to be marginalized even though it was economically powerful than Sindhis in the city (remember Sindhis were always mad since Fed had earlier taken Karachi without any compensation to provincial govt). Post '71 and Sindhi-ization of Karachi, middle class migrants feel they're being marginalized and take up arms. This is long before a ANP-MQM rivalry heats up. Pathans move in only after '84 and the ANP-MQM game heats up only in this decade. The '80s and '90s were about MQM monopolizing the city and fighting against the state.

Now, the same group which fought against marginalization and denial of rights, keeps yammering about another ethnic group taking over the city. Forgotten when you were the victims?

MQM is the most insecure party in the country by any margin. Violence, both organized and unorganized, is its way of seeking security. We've seen plenty of that. I'd tolerate their existence in the political game if the MQM stops its monopolization of Karachi and realizes that a progressive political ideology is not about maintaining control over a city. But it has to maintain control over a city since that is the bargaining chip it has. Close down the city, burn the shops and cripple trade and finance over the country. Won't you include us in the govts?

The apathy and the lack of courage of Karachiites is appalling. Operation Clean-ups are not the answer. Karachi must be taken out of their hands carefully by political maneuvering and making people realize that tolerating criminal gangs and mafias is not in their interest and their apathy only strengthens the hands of do-no-gooders.

Short term-ism and lack of intellectual rigour plagues your judgmental - besides the lack of rationality. There's no point in arguing with "educated" types who for once cannot see the reality.

I am by no means an MQM-hater but blind "educated" Altaf worshipers are irksome and worthy of an intellectual beating every once in a while.

MQM is a party of thugs and criminals which is abusing the history and honourable sacrifices of Muslims who choose to cross the broder in !947. This is evident that MQM has ruthlessly killed thousands of Mohajirs in false flag operations for nothing but opposing its so-called agenda which as turned life hell for mohjirs and made them an outcast of societ. These so called MQM members are thugs of UP who colonised our economic heart. Those who keep a close eye on Indian gang wars will see similar tactics used in Mumbai by same thugs giving rise to the Mumbai gang war and its notrious encounter squad.

The MQM is reasonably linked to RAW and its a remote arm for sabotage. Its loyalities lies with India and is populated by very pro-India fake mohajirs! Think of Altaf as Mujeeb, black tigers (MQM millitant arm) as Mukti Bahini and MQM party as AL and the story becomes evident very clearly. History is being repeated once again.

They can always use the city and it's residents as hostages to their demands.

As of now, I happen to have found out that these words are from a fact sheet published on the Federation of American Scientists (FAS) written by one Dr Q T Butt (links to FAS website are dead. However archived image of page can be seen here http://bit.ly/dBRZu2).

Either the ISI, IB and SB copied that fact sheet verbatim or DT has published a nonfactual report (but that would require that the Senator would be presenting an nonfactual report).
