Indus Water Treaty now ineffective: int'l water expert

why you people waste 1/3 water of Indus river into Arabian Sea.

That is unfortunate. however this argument does not grant any right to Indians to block and release water in Pakistan at will.

Where as the subject matter is why Pakistan govt. is not complaining and who is this guy named 'Wilayat Ali Shah'! who appointed him?

Problem is even the water Pakistan gets alot of it is wasted that is not the fault of India.

Indus Water Treaty now ineffective: int'l water expert Pakistan Business

KARACHI: The Indus Water Treaty has now become ineffective as India is continuously violating all clauses of the treaty and Pakistan is not challenging them at any international forum by tacit approbation.

.......
The Senate Committee on Food and Agriculture said underground water in Punjab province was going down due to provision of free electricity to Indian Punjab for tube wells. The farmers were taking excessive water through tube wells, which resulted in downward trend of water in Pakistan's Punjab. The underground water level went down from about 70-100 feet to up to 1,000 feet and has been termed as a worsening situation.

Is it our fault that we provide continuous Electricity to our Farmers?

Who said it is your fault? You can go ahead to provide free electricity to beyond Punjab farmers as well.

This proves that you guys have enough water but don't have capacity to manage it and w.r.t this point you can't demand more water because you are not able to manage what you have.
We are building 50+ dams all started after 2000 and most of them are near to finish and you guys are still fighting for Kalabagh and trying to get finance for other ..

According this link http://centralasiaonline.com/en_GB/articles/caii/features/pakistan/2010/09/25/feature-01 (authored by Pakistani experts on Water management)
major issue are
“Wasteful farming techniques, leakages in the irrigation network, climate change and the over-exploitation or pollution of natural aquifers and other water bodies also rank among major culprits,” said coastal ecosystem scientist Muhammad Tahir Quryshi of the July floods.

and according to this link Deforestation rate alarming: Report
Pakistan is having the world's second highest rate of deforestation, leading to the wholesale disappearance of trees, shrubs and ground flora together with the vertebrate and invertebrate fauna they normally support.

Now if you join all this factors , you will get clear picture. Without forests land lose capacity to hold water for long time and excess rain get converted into flood and under ground water don't get re-charge.

And according to International Law, no country is allowed to alter its rivers if some other country is getting damaged due to it. So, practically, there should have been no need to sign IWT if India was so sincere in peace keeping :)
So far there is no work to divert the Indus water down south into INDIAN territory. All we do is to construct run off dams to generate power and now as we have a effective way of producing electricity from the water that is flowing to PAKISTAN, some fanatics do not want that power to benifit INDIANs.

International law? Can you show where it is written down?

There are treaty's and conventions and you have to a signatory. India is nto part of any ocnvention. there is treaty called IWT and the sponsor, world bank, hasn't decided that india violates the treaty. come back and talk to us when they do.

Unfortunately ppl in Pakistan understand language of those who hates India , not spoken by some same international organisation which have one of the best minds working on matters

Well Pakistan is setting a precedent by continuously breaking cease fire and sending murders across the border India is only taking her lead.

+ anyway why has no outside organisation got involved or even commented? India is developing much faster than Pakistan that is all these fools are upset about. Thanks to such projects blackouts will be a thing of the past in the next 5-7 years.

in case of another Pakistani backed terror attack or ceasefire violation we should consider the fact that we can turn Pakistan into a barren desert by diverting the Indus which is arguably the lifeline of the Pakistani economy. But hopefully peace prevails if not then tit for tat doesn't seem like a bad option imho

Indus Water Treaty is the most generous water sharing treaty in the world. India has allocated 80% of Indus Water system to Pakistan, yet we are the bad guys

Are you ill informed or uneducated. India is not blocking water. Constructing run-of river dams is there in the treaty. The WB has said India has adhered to the treaty and in spite of the trror caused by Pak in india. Do not parrot what zaid hamid and hafiz saeed say

You are missing the point! which is, Zardari's Pakistan is not complaining at all!
we think zardari's pak is more legitimate than kayani's pak or hafizsaeed's pak.

When we are doing nothing we are continuously blamed I think there is no reason why we should not not really divert the water? Indus after going through Pakistan has started entering Katch region why don't we take it directly there..

Or another solution, India fund via soft loan, a dam to be built on Pakistani side, so that they can stop wasting water..
