Indonesia calls on Israel to stop military strikes in Gaza
JAKARTA, July 11 (Xinhua) -- Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on Friday asked the Israeli government to end military strikes against Gaza, which has claimed dozen of civilian lives.
President Yudhoyono called for international humanitarian assistance for the victims of the military attacks.
"The military strikes on Palestine are beyond the limit, un- proportional and killed many of innocent civilians," President Yudhoyono said at the State Palace.
President Yudhoyono reaffirmed that Indonesia strongly condemned the Israeli aggression against the people in Gaza.
"Therefore, aside from condemning the strike, Indonesia also undertakes diplomacy at the international level," Yudhoyono said.
The Indonesian government insists that a ceasefire has to be conducted under the supervision of the United Nations, he said, adding that both sides should avoid reciprocal action.
President Yudhoyono has also scheduled to communicate with Iranian President Hasan Rouhani.
Indonesia has long supported the Palestinian cause to set up an independent state and does not have diplomatic ties with Israel.
