Indian Navy Will Boost Kamov Fleet With New Carrier | Aviation International News

The Indian Navy is set to receive four additional Kamov Ka-28 anti-submarine warfare and five Ka-31 radar picket helicopters when its new Vikramaditya aircraft carrier is delivered, hopefully by the end of 2013. The new rotorcraft will supplement nine Ka-31s delivered between 1999 and 2004 and 16 Ka-28s that entered service in the late 1980s. The Indian Navy has been a good customer to the Russian helicopter manufacturer and has five Ka-25PLs that it inherited from the former Soviet navy in the 1980s. If India opts to order more Talwar-class frigates from Russia, this could lead to further contracts for Russian-made naval helicopters.

A small doubt, with radar this big under the belly, is landing going to be a problem for this Heli?? Or the radar is retractable?

Sir, if you see there is a pin in center of radar ( about whose axis the radar can swivel). This can be folded back before landing.
I hope the figure explains the solution

I am not a fan of Kamov birds at all- very crude looking to me.

Maybe so, but they are the most potent ship borne ASW platforms the IN has.

To an extent- the Seaking ASW fleet isn't too bad.

it will be a good day when the IN gets the latest AWS helo platoforms though- hopefully the deal is signed soon. I have been saying for quite some time that the rotary wing of the IN is increadibly neglected and it seems the IN top brass now agree as they are looking to replace pretty much every helo in the IN's inventory by 2018-20 and has layed out plans to spend $7-9BN on helos alone by 2020.
