The Modi government is planning to modernise the Indian Army’s artillery gun arsenal in a big way. Sources said the government could be considering acquisition of over 800 of the 155mm 52-calibre artillery guns at an estimated cost of Rs 15,750 crore.

The proposed acquisition could come up before the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) now headed by new defence minister Manohar Parrikar at Saturday’s crucial meeting.

Most of the guns are expected to be manufactured in India as part of the Modi government’s strong push for indigenisation. The Indian Army has not acquired any new artillery gun for over 25 years. The DAC could also consider a joint bid by Tata Sons and European manufacture Airbus to manufacture 56 transport aircraft to replace the Avro fleet of the Indian Air Force (IAF) at a possible cost of nearly Rs 12,000 crore.

The DAC could also consider acquisition of an additional 106 Swiss Pilatus basic trainer aircraft for the IAF at an estimated cost of about Rs 8,200 crore. The government could insist that most of these aircraft be manufactured in India after transfer of technology from the Swiss firm. The IAF is thrilled so far at the performance of the Pilatus aircraft which had been acquired earlier.

Great move. :welcome: If implemented, will boost.IA's capabilities in a big way. Artillery is one aspect IA had been legging behind. :coffee:

We should split it .. Half for dhanush to replace obsolete ones
and half for a cutting edge artillery as way for the future..

Nice..............

I wish we had something like this too

Bro, Dhanush doesn't even come into the picture. There are 3 separate artillery procurements ongoing:

Mounted Gun System (what this news relates to)
Towed gun system
Ultra Light Howitzer

The total guns the IA is looking for to buy within the next few years is in the 1000s such is the state of the neglect of the arty in the IA (thanks Congress/Bofors).

Dhanush is a towed gun so it can fulfil the second category's requirements to an extent.

The Caesar is likely to win- it is a very good system and fits in perfectly with the IA's combat doctrine. Whilst I really like the Archer, it is too heavy.

Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) headed by defence minister Manohar Parrikar has cleared long ending proposal to acquire 814 truck mounted 155 mm/52 calibre howitzer guns at the cost of 15000 Cr today giving major boost to Artillery’s modernisation plans of Indian Army .

Likely contenders are French Nexter Systems who have tied up with Larsen & Toubro to offer 155 mm/52-calibre gun Ceaser howitzer installed on Ashok leyland’s Super Stalion 6×6 truck . Tata Power Strategic Electronics Division (SED), has offered a derivative of the G5 from Denel Land Systems of the South Africa mounted on an eight-wheeled Tata truck . BAE Systems teamed with Mahindra Defence offering the FH-77BW L52 Archer,Yugoimport SDPR teamed with Punj Lloyd for Nora-B52K1 , Krauss Maffei-Wegmann has teamed with Ashok Leyland for AGM (on a 6 x 6 truck).

Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) after clearance will kick start Truck-Mounted 155mm Gun trials in India by Indian Army . Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) is currently spearheading the Advanced Towed Artillery Gun (ATAG) project to develop a 155-millimetre 52-calibre Towed Gun by 2016,India already has dropped plans to acquire M777 Ultra Light Howitzers (ULH) from US due to Higher Purchase cost . Plans to Procure 180 x 155mm/52 calibre wheeled self-propelled (SP) guns were also dropped due to the guns not meeting the technical requirements and certain infirmities in the trial process itself . Indian Army has placed orders for 114 ” Dhanush ” guns of 155-millimetre (mm), 45 calibre ” made by the Ordnance Factory Board (OFB), based on the design and manufacturing technology provided by Swedish gun maker Bofors AG in the late 1980s.

We need more self propelled tracked 155mm guns like the Paladin to keep up with the combat groups over varied terrain. Like this one...

The earth shakes as an M109A6 Paladin fires a gas propelled 155mm Howitzer round

Useless waste of Money.Having weapons is suited to first world countries.Third world countries should first concentrate on decreasing poverty rather then spending money on this junk.

Well a moot point considering many of these so-called "third world" nations( you should look up th true definition of that term by the way) don't enjoy the same levels of peace in their neighbourhoods as the "first world".
