India target 12 medals at London Olympics 2012

its good to set targets :) hope we are providing proper and adequate facilities to our athletes. we have very hard working athletes. but their hard work goes in vain cause of outdated training equipment and no modern coaching methodology. a lot of potential yet to be harnessed.
.

.we got our first bronze medal (in an individual event) from karnam malleshwari who practised weight lifting in a gym without any coach.

Now most of them have foreign coaches. Facilities have improved too. Our boxers are performing well under the guidence of their Cuban coach. Our athletes were sent to Ukraine for training. You can see the difference in their performance in CWG and Asian games...

Government has to look at ground levels to seek out promising talents. Our performance in Olympics and CWGs is a shame for us, we have a population of 1.21 billion and yet we get satisfied with our meager performances.

this small successes are very important as they motivate the new generation of sports persons. Otherwise sponsorship, infrastructure etc would be of no use..... And you can go on top in single day.

that's only selective isn't it its only for the ones who have performed well. its good to best the better that's called perfection, meanwhile please take other areas of athletics like swimming, short putt,0hammer throw, discuss etc etc. how good is the training infrastructur all over India? not every one can go to Delhi to practice.

only three medals...where are the other 9 ?

True...we need to improve infrastructure from school level, only then we can have a pool of talents. India's victory in 1983 world cup cricket increased popularity of the game and cricket has become a religion in india.....situation is much better there in comparing to other sports. if mary Kom, Saina nehwal, Aswini or Vijendra Kumar succeed, we can see same thing in other sports too...

heck if Chinese can beat the Americans with sheer determination, then even we can do it, just need enough sponsorship and government backing for the sports infrastructure.

That is right.

If India hosts the next Olympics, I'm sure they could pull it off as well. There is a huge talent pool.

will be bagged by the upcoming champions. they may not be that prominent but might just surprise us like the two women who won medals in athletics in commonwealth GAMES, that was a surprise.

I think you have missed out the most secured medal.....Magnificent Mary....5 times world champion in her own category. This event is going to be included first time in Olympic.

You must check recent performance of India shooters and Archers. You can be confident of some medals frome there. Couple of golds very much possible.

Though on paper Aswini Akkunji has to improve her timing for an Olympic medal , my heart says she is capable of cutting her timing by 3 seconds which is equired.

very good point there bro, we need to create awareness about the benefits of sports we have to make people realise that they can take sports as a career and they can make a good living out of it, why always aim to be a doctor or an engineer? can't we aim at a bit higher and tougher target and make our nation proud!

So you want to credit your last Olympic success to the home crowd support ? so you are sure that this time US will surpass you again? just because its not held in China?
.
.
its your determination that you won't let the Americans win on your land, you took it as a challenge, your athletes had that confidence, your government harnessed their potential, and you guys did it :) beating US in Olympics is a gigantic task. I yar so happy to see the medals tally China being at #1

I was so proud of your achievement :)

China believes the young talented athletes, if they can rake almost 200 gold medals in their first time playing in a major sport event, then they will have the chance to outperform again in the London Olympics.

Kolkata, Dec 17 (Agencies): The two sporting events—Commonwealth Games and Asian Games—have witnessed emergence of Indian archers ahead of the London Olympics in two years time.

Deepika Kumari, the 16-year-old Ranchi girl and daughter of an autorickshaw driver, was the best performer in the Commonwealth Games.

Deepika, Tarundeep Rai have been seen as the future of Indian archery.
Targetting a rich haul of medals in the Commonwealth Games, Archery Association India in association with Sports Authority of India had provided comprehensive training about two years in advance and appointed Limba Ram as the national coach.

The result was though just eight medals— three gold, one silver and four bronze—of the 24 up for grabs with the World Cup champions men's team returning duds with a bronze finish, as Limba, whose contract expired after the Asian Games, termed Commonwealth Games campaign a disappointment.

There were no South Koreans in the Commonwealth Games, but Indians had to fight it out against the world champions in the Asian Games and they proved a point or two.

Capping his comeback in style, Tarundeep inflicted one of the rare defeats on a South Korean when the Sikkim archer stunned second-seeded Oh Jin Hyek en route to the semifinals in the Asian Games.

Tarundeep proved his worth again beating Sung Chai Chun of Chinese Taipei in the semifinals before going down to world record holder Kim Woo Jin in the final to return with a first ever silver from the Asiad.
