India is in talks to export natural gas to Pakistan through a pipeline from Punjab to help the country overcome crippling energy shortage.

State gas utility GAIL has proposed to lay a 110-km pipeline from Jalandhar to Wagah border via Amritsar to supply natural gas to Pakistan, company Chairman and Managing Director B C Tripathi told reporters here.

Gas in its liquid form (liquefied natural gas or LNG) will be imported at ports in Gujarat and moved through GAIL's existing pipeline network till Jalandhar. It will then be moved through the proposed line.

"Pakistan has evinced interest in taking LNG from us to meet its energy demand," he said. "The export is techno-commercially feasible. We can do that subject to Government of India approval and arriving of commercial agreement."

Initially, Pakistan wants to take 1-1.5 million tonnes of LNG. "Pricing and other commercial negotiations are going on," he said, refusing to elaborate.

LNG imports into India are currently in the range of USD 13-14 per million British thermal unit and after including customs or import duty, pipeline transportation charges and local taxes, the delivered price will be close to USD 21.

Pakistan, which does not have an LNG import facility at present, is willing to buy LNG from GAIL provided India exempts it from taxes to bring down the cost.

Tripathi said pipeline exports to Pakistan are viable and should be looked at in the context of India looking at importing gas through a cross-country Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India pipeline.

WTF is wrong with our guies :undecided:
Why in the world we will be exporting something that we import and our domestic need is NOT fulfilled ???
Second question is that going to change Pakistan's mind ???
Let them do that from Iran or may be from the new port Chinese developing.
Just stay away from them !!!!!!!

They pay for transportation from GAIL's pipelines and LNG import facilities.

The price should be fair ... and this works because cost transporting LNG from Karachi to Lahore via road or rail will costlier to them.

Good for both India and Pakistan.

I'm willing to bet this photo is not from India... any engineer who have worked with Indians, before 9-11 can swear on this.

Why no comments from pro Pakistani members? How do they compare it with more costly Iranian gas?

Or central asian gas ... its all about costs !!

India doesn't produce gas (in surplus) to export.

Iran exports LNG, and so does Oman .. so Pakistan is actually going to pay them for their gas.

The discussion is about transporting that gas to northern Pakistan .... Lahore etc.

All India has is surplus pipeline capacity .. otherwise, Pakistan could transport its imported gas by road or rail, if feasible. Developing pipelines takes many years. That's why.

Already India is in energy crisis and almost all the southern states are suffering a lot. We are in no position to export gas/energy to any other country, still if we does then it'll be the most stupidest move.

As I said, we are not exporting our gas !!!

Just providing transportation.

India herself imports natural resources i dont think this will happen.

You shouldn't post without reading above.

India is not going to export gas to Pakistan... the proposal is only about "transportation".

So, your comment about "India imports natural resources", while true, is irrelevant.

If it comes for transportation then Pakistan should transport that to u not u to us as we share the borders with Middle East not u.

Yes, so lay down the pipleline infrastructure ... and fast.

Because the gas is needed for the already built power stations in Pakistan to produce electricity now.

In fact, you don't start digging the well when your house is on fire .. but use the water from your neighbour's well.

Whether we do or not who r u tell us what to do and what not to?

We r going to import gas from iran which is more realistic then this indian stunt.

India isn't telling Pakistan to get the gas via India.

India isn't telling Pakistan to get electricity from India ... for its industries, which are facing huge power shortage.

It's for Pakistan to source these things, from where ever it feels best and cheapest.

Pakistani Ambassabdor Salman Bashir said this:

If Pakistan starts laying down the pipleline now .. when will the power reach the Pakistani Industry?

If Pakistan's gas based power plants don't produce electricity now .... when will the power reach Pakistani Industry?
