NEW DELHI: India is the 19th largest exporter with a share of 1.7 per cent in the worldwide merchandise trade, Parliament was informed on Friday.

On the other hand, the country is the 12th largest importer with a share of 2.5 per cent in 2011.

"As per WTO's International Statistics, 2012, in merchandise trade, India is 19th largest exporter in the world with a share of 1.7 per cent and 12th largest importer with a share of 2.5 per cent in 2011," minister of state for finance Namo Narain Meena said in a written reply to the Lok Sabha.

In commercial services, the country is the eighth largest exporter in the world with a share of 3.3 per cent and the seventh largest importer with a share of 3.1 per cent, he said.

Due to the global demand slowdown, the country's overseas shipment during the April-January period of 2012-13 shrunk by 4.86 per cent to $239.6 billion.

The minister said that exports played an important role in the economic development of countries and the government has regularly undertaken various policy measures to boost exports.

Recently, the government has extended a 2 per cent interest subsidy scheme for labour intensive sectors till March 2014, he said.

"Increase in exports generates more employment in the country," he added.

A share of 1.7 per cent in the worldwide merchandise trade?? :undecided: Is that anything to be happy about? $239.6 billion in exports during Apr-Jan? This sucks! That's 1.7% world share for a country that holds 14% of the world's population! :what:

In contrast the Swiss are 0.1% of the world's population but had exports worth almost $300 billion during the same period!! :woot:

So what the fu@k are our great worthies dancing about? They should instead hang their heads in shame for their failed economic policies!!

Empty Chest thumping by Indian Government will damage their rib cages one day .

Second largest population and 19th biggest exporter :hang2:
Second biggest population so too much internal consumption. Demand is too high that we have to import.

Our economy is not yet manufacturing based.

Look at size of countries along with population. Always factor in all factors.

Look at the available size and money in the world and compare it with 1.2 billion people out of 7 billion total population of world with Independence just 65 years ago and centuries of looting that has created 450 million poor people.

I am not happy with these figures but I also consider other factors.

That is not a logical argument. In that way, China percentage should also be near ours, is it really that way ?

India is a third world backward country ruled by moronic vote bank bastards and cowards, accept it. :hang2:

Indian population is not productive, thanks to no government mechanism, idiotic red tape, super duper corruption, vote bank politics, inherent cowardice, lack of entrepreneurship, slave mindset. Its a combination of multiple factors as to why India is lagging behind.

Report by leading management consultants have said that such a condition will continue till the foreseeable future where the divide between the rich and poor will keep widening. The govt. will keep getting rich while the people will either remain where they are or keep or keep getting poor.

All country resources will keep getting looted and all Indian money will end up In the Swiss Alps, poor Indians will continue their slavery, others will pick up guns and become Maoists. Indian enemies will keep planting bombs in Indian cities and ordinary Indian will keep dying.

Gap between China and India will reach such a stage where India can beat China only in dreams.

Also, do not forget that the main markets, Europe and the US are in a recession !

I totally agree with you, Indian economic woes are a political problem, not an economic problem. Unless there is a drastic political change, don't expect its economy to change too much. Its up to the ordinary Indians to fix India now.
