WASHINGTON: Notwithstanding India's strong protest, the Obama administration on Saturday justified its move to sell eight F-16 fighters to Pakistan claiming that these jets were "critical" to the country's counter-terrorism operations.

"We support the proposed sale of eight F-16s to Pakistan to assist Pakistan's counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency operations. Pakistan's current F-16s have proven critical to the success of these operations to date," a State Department official told PTI.

He was responding when referred to the strong objection expressed by India which said it "disagrees" with the rationale presented by the Obama administration.

Earlier in the day, Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar summoned US Ambassador to India Richard Verma in New Delhi to convey India's "disappointment" over America's decision.

"We are disappointed at the decision of the Obama administration to notify the sale of F-16 aircraft to Pakistan. We disagree with their rationale that such arms transfers help to combat terrorism. The record of the last many years in this regard speaks for itself," the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement.

On February 11, the US state department notified the Congress of its decision to sell eight F-16 to Pakistan worth about US $700 million. Now all eyes are on the US Congress where there is stiff opposition to giving such military hardware to Pakistan.

Senator Bob Corker, who is the chairman of the Senate foreign relations committee, has already vowed to block the sale to the country that is acting as a "duplicitous partner" and providing safe havens to terror groups.

"F-16s are the right platform to support Pakistan's counter-terrorism and counterinsurgency operations, and have proven critical to the success of their past operations against militant groups," the state department official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

"These operations reduce the ability of militants to use Pakistani territory as a safe haven for terrorism and a base of support for the insurgency in Afghanistan. These operations are in the national interests of Pakistan, the United States, NATO, and in the interest of the region more broadly," the official said.
"As always, we are committed to working with Congress to deliver security assistance to our partners and allies that furthers US foreign policy interests by building capacity to meet shared security challenges," the official said.

The Obama administration's decision comes at a time when India is engaged in prodding Pakistan to take action against perpetrators of the Pathankot terror attack as well as 26/11 attacks in the wake of revelations made by Pakistani-American convict David Coleman Headley during his testimony before a Mumbai court via video link from the US.
In his testimony, Headley has stated that terror groups like Lashkar-e-Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammed get financial and military support from Pakistan's spy agency ISI.

Welcome Move, US and Pakistan has to work closely together to eradicate the menace of terrorism from this region. Pakistan has to step up its game and progress economically. US needs to give us at-least 36 F-16V to fight terrorism(if you know what I mean) :azn: and rest we can buy from our money.

Tbh if anyone is thinking about working together with the US against terrorism or anything, it will be their biggest mistake coz they aint good for shit all, all they give **** about is their own interest tbh!!!

Why we are going for just 8 birds? And what difference this tiny figure will make than bhartiies are going total d!ck over it? o_O
Coz they are dicks bro!!! Plus, these 8 birds can have 8 more M M ALAMS sitting in them, thats how they see it bro!!!

In the words of George Bush senior, despite the hot and cold relationship, US can not ignore Pakistan, this was the advise he passed on to Bush junior hence while the older F-16 were embargoed, newer and much more capable versions were released to Pakistan....the way American system works some hurdles are bound to come in the way add to that the butt hurt neighbour behaving like a bewildered divorcee....however, in the end things always go in Pakistan's favour.

Always told the neighbours that whatever you do and lobby, the show must go on and such deals aren't new for Pak. Though all the bribery and buttering by lobbeists gone in vain yet earned embarrassment.

Indeed these 8 F-16s wouldn't change the power balance at large but after all it's a win for Pakistan diplomacy and double slap to the lobbeists.

It's to bring No5 squadron up to it's full strength since it's also acting as the OCU for the Block-52....in capable hands even this tiny force can prove lethal.

Take the eight F-16 Obama is offering. May be the next president will offer more. Plus, plenty of used US F-16s will be available once the F-35s start replacing them. Some of Pakistan 1980s vintage F-16s will need to be replaced regardless.

India will complain about any military sale US makes to Pakistan; and Pakistan does the same. Believe me, Pakistan is no less of a whiner on this score.

Though India may have failed to convince the Obama Administration on selling the F-16s to Pakistan, it will try to convince Congress to block the deal, which is currently doing. The block will be removed, I just don't know when.

Haha before the is the Indians were supporting almost everything the US did.

The desperation in the comment section is OFF THE CHARTS lmao. Apparently Modi Ji isn't as influential as the bhartis thought :D. They over estimate their own abilities.

People who dont know what is lobby and diplomacy should not talk about them.

Because our lobby and diplomacy we got the nuclear agreement or can get most of the american equipment and some you guys can only dream off inspite of having relation with them for over half a century.

Lobbying is not about winning all the time, you are looking at it from a narrow point of view, you see it as Indians tried stoping it and you are getting it so we lost.thats a narrow way of looking at it.
As you agree 8 planes wont change anything between our two airforces.in all this there was no where your lobby or diplomacy.

Try getting 50 planes and you will see the difference in results.
