The main opposition BNP is set to announce fresh anti-government agitation programmes including hartal today from a protest rally against a recent hike in fuel prices and increase in transport fares.

The party will stage the demonstration in front of its central office at Nayapaltan. Senior leaders are expected to address the meeting.

Chairperson Khaleda Zia last night sat with her senior party colleagues to chalk out the agitation programme. They were considering to call hartal for sometime in next week, party insiders said.

Against the backdrop of placement of a bill in the House for the fifteenth amendment to the constitution, BNP decided to resist the move by any means. The bill recommended abolishment of the caretaker government (CG) system.

Tougher agitation programmes will be announced today against the government's “conspiracy to drop the caretaker government system,” said Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, acting secretary general of BNP.

Party policymakers believe conviction of Khaleda's younger son Arafat Rahman Koko in a money laundering case and the parliament's move to drop the CG system from the constitution are nothing but a challenge to BNP thrown by the government.

According to them, the common people and most of the political parties are in favour of the CG system. BNP's stance for continuing with the system will be very popular and ultimately would force the government to meet its demand.

“An anti-government movement will be forged step by step under the leadership of Khaleda Zia to ensure the system stays in the charter,” a member of the party's standing committee told The Daily Star last night, seeking anonymity.

The chairperson herself will take decision regarding the agitation programmes, he added.

The leader of the opposition in parliament already demanded the House keep the provision unchanged in the constitution. She also maintained talks can be held on who will lead the next caretaker government.

She insisted her party would not participate in the next national election under any political government.

The CG system is a form of government system in which the country is ruled by a selected government for an interim period during transition from one government to another, after the completion of tenure of the former.

No BNP backing

BNP has not lent support to today's half-day hartal as it is still in the dark about the content of the gas exploration deal with American energy company ConocoPhillips.....

“People will resist if the government tries to make any new plot against Tarique Rahman to defame him,” warned Fakhrul adding, a portion of the media is also conducting propaganda against Tarique, which would not be acceptable to the nation......

e brought the allegation against the authorities just a day before filing of charge sheets by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in the cases. The incumbent Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina narrowly escaped the attack in 2004 that left 24 AL leaders and activists killed.

The government brought changes to the constitution to implement its secret agenda and is now plotting against Zia family to ensure none could protest, complained Fakhrul. .....

Apparently everything is personality based!

Police should practice a bit more meditation.
What sort of code is that to harass senior
personnels like that, no mater what the order was.

Jolly good!

A holiday well deserved after so much of squabbling!

Nice theme song.

Let the Games begin!

even a fart and a sneeze seem to be a valid reason for a hartal here.Hope they declare war on india for some silly reason

BGMEA fears export fall due to hartal

Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) on Tuesday apprehended that the textile exports might face a setback due to continuous hartals called by opposition parties.

In a statement on the eve of a 48-hour hartal that begins Wednesday morning, the BGMEA said the hartal of July 6 and 7 as well as July 10 and 11 would hamper positive trend of economic progress, although the garment industries have been kept out of the purview of hartal.

"Buyers may switch over to other countries due to political unrest, while 'lead time' for exports will go up as the garment sector will face disruption in production," said the statement signed by BGMEA Secretary Mohammad Mustafizur Rahman.

It said the hartal has been called at a time when the workers are supposed to get their monthly wages. So, it would be difficult for employers to pay salaries to workers and it might lead to labour unrest in the readymade garment industry (RMG), the biggest export earner.
BGMEA fears export fall due to hartal

Bangladesh's lifeline will be seriously affected.

The greater fear is that with the uncertain environment importers will switch to other more dependable nations and then this otherwise success story and a foreign exchange earner will die out leading to fall in national earning, lead to unemployment, will cause labour unrest and general decline in the pace of progress of Bangaldesh!

BNP, Jamaat stage demos Saturday
They extend support to 30-hour hartal

Friday, July 8, 2011

The BNP and its key ally Jamaat-e-Islami have simultaneously declared a two-day agitation including staging countrywide demonstrations on Saturday.

The opposition parties have also extended their support to the 30-hour hartal starting Sunday morning. An alliance of 12 parties comprised of mostly Islamist groups called the hartal on June 30 in protest against the dropping of the phrase “absolute faith in Allah” from the country's charter.

The parties protesting the scrapping of caretaker government system from the constitution announced the programme separately on Friday.

Speaking at a press briefing at its Nayapaltan central office in the afternoon, BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said they will stage countrywide demonstrations on Saturday and launch mass hunger strike at 10:00am on Wednesday in front of the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh in the capital.

He said the BNP will hold the programmes protesting the “attempt on the life” of Opposition Chief Whip Zainul Abdin Farroque who was injured seriously in police action on Wednesday, the first day of its 48-hour non-stop nationwide hartal. .......
