Gujarat wants NCC Navy wing in state

The state government has written to the Centre asking it to start a naval wing of the National Cadet Corps (NCC) in Gujarat, given the state’s long coastline in the state.
In a letter to the central government, state’s Fisheries Minister Dilip Sanghani has also requested to make NCC training compulsory in schools for better fitness and discipline among students.

“Gujarat has the longest coastline (1600-km) in the country and there are special security and welfare needs in these areas. Navy wing of NCC can help the state government in recruiting trained staff for its newly created marine police and commandos. It can also help the Indian Navy in attracting good talent from Gujarat,” Sanghani said.

“NCC can also help students from the fishing community and coastal areas in getting essential training of rescue and security as well as in getting suitable jobs in Navy, marine police and in private and government ports. We are ready to provide all required facilities to start NCC’s Navy wing in state,” Sanghani added.

NCC, a tri-services organisation, provides volunteers in schools and colleges semi-military and basic arms training.

The state fisheries department is also starting industrial training institutes in the state to train students from the fishing community in repairing and maintenance of boats, marine equipment and in port-related engineering.

One such institute was recently opened by the state government in Jafrabad taluka in Amreli district.
