China's naval nationalism: Has A K Antony blinked?

Why is it all right for the Chinese Navy to operate in India's backyard and wrong, from the perspective of our Ministry of Defence, for the Indian Navy to conduct naval exercises in China's frontyard?

As Beijing revels in its newly minted naval nationalism, New Delhi seems determined to curb the Indian Navy's enthusiasm to raise the nation's maritime profile.

The MoD's decision, at the eleventh hour, to pull the services out of a multilateral naval exercise in the Western Pacific last week, begs some serious questions. Is the Minister of Defence, A K Antony, in sync with India's naval aspirations? Or has he begun to feel the heat from the Chinese pressures on our land borders?

Questions about his uncertain naval vision arose when he refused to let the Navy join the international operations against pirates in the Gulf of Aden last year. As Antony dithered for long before saying yes, Beijing used the international concerns on piracy to mount its first ever expeditionary naval operation into the Indian Ocean.

As it completes its year-long deployment in the Indian Ocean, Beijing is now eager to expand its maritime cooperation with the US and other western powers that have begun to acknowledge China's rise as a naval power.

The Indian Navy, which has a longer record of modern operations at sea and enjoys many maritime advantages over China, appears increasingly tied down by the terrible timidity of the MoD's political leadership.

In contrast, the Chinese Communist Party has embarked on a massive mobilisation of naval nationalism. CCP chairman Hu Jintao repeatedly talks of China's "manifest maritime destiny". Thanks to the CCP campaign, Chinese citizens are turning up in droves to offer personal donations to help Beijing build aircraft carriers

If Antony thinks he is being 'nice' to the Chinese by cancelling exercises in the Western Pacific, he has no inkling of how Beijing thinks. The Chinese respect those with the will to power, and they mount relentless pressure on those who wilt.

Recall the recent Chinese tease for a naval condominium with the US: Washington could stay in the Eastern Pacific and China would police the Western Pacific and Indian Oceans.

As it rises, China will inevitably build a powerful navy. It is also logical that China will protect its growing interests in the Indian Ocean. There is no way India can or should stop it. New Delhi must focus, instead, on consolidating its own position in the Indian Ocean and elevating its maritime profile in the Western Pacific.

It is that strategic parity that will provide the basis for a much needed maritime dialogue and cooperation with China. But if New Delhi is eager to offer unilateral naval concessions, why blame Beijing for turning up the heat?

in just 2 years, our annual defense budget is going to reach 100 billion USD, excluding hardware R&D and imports.

I doubt how india is going to do anything to stop us. indian ocean is never india's ocean.

try your muscles to be there, that will be the worst time in your history. Everything belongs to china, indian ocean, south china sea, or may be the pacific ocean after destroying some US carriers with some of the so called advanced cruise missiles. Or may be some day you will claim the Indian ocean as Far china sea .

Good luck. It is good to dream always.

Article is like only china is expanding. And india is doing nothing, we are not expanding and not building carriers. Whatever blah blah.

China wants to police indian ocean :) . Why ? to protect its cargo ships ?

Well not many pirates really in indian ocean except the somalis . I am interested to see how the chinese navy reacts when some bloody pirates fires on them with rpgs etc.

India has fought naval wars(very well fought indeed) ,has handled aircraft carriers since independence. Fired some bullets and foiled piracy attempts in anti piracy operations. Did disaster relief and evacuation during Tsunami and so on and on.

Dude, we are doing some real policing in indian ocean. Not escorting ships currently as bodyguards. It might be boring job to do for 24 hrs.

we took a break. thats it. Will be back to aden soon if requests. This time with Aircraft carrier as earlier declared by Anthony. And then lets get back and comment on this thread.

Which budget number are talking about? the official printed one or the real number. The official number for 08 was 30 billion, but no one really knows the true number. I am sure you are resourceful to get inside information which even enemy spies can't get :)

Don't kid around so much. Be factual rather than emotional. I dont know whether you are aware that China only has yellow water navy, whereas India has a blue water navy.

Probably, you live in China and so you dont know what world thinks about China. Chinese products never been known for quality, only quantity outside China.

So we have Walmart selling Chinese products not luxury retailers.

for the past 7 years, I live in Sydney. we change the image of China by holding those 800 billion US government bonds.

it is also interesting to know what do you mean by "we". do you really believe it is your Walmart? trust me, slums are yours, "we" is the word which you should use when talking about those 2 million/year dying children in indian.

sure, a lot of Chinese products are not luxury, the fact is most of those stuff can't be built in india.

刚b样西一边,苏北刚b。

So, you acknowledge China is El-Cheapo! It is a good step forward.

I am amazed even living outside for 7 years, you were not able to know GDP per capita of your country. You believe people who earn 3000$ / capital live in towers? So please dont kid yourself.

Just like you said cheapest products are not made in India, yes it is true. Similarly high tech things that are made in India cannot be made in China.

Your govt relies obedience of the people and controls the media and has election of one-party government. I cannot understand how can one elect some one in a one-party government. That is called human rights and I hope living for a couple of years outside hopefully would have given some insight of what I am telling you.

You are desperate to compare slums in India, and it is out there. But there is nothing to hide in India. We have it and we are poor country. But being Chinese and being born in China, you would have very well seen slums (unless ofcourse you were blind).

Another fact for you, if you can take anymore of it. China surpased per-capita of India only in 1991, till then China was behind India. So I am amazed how silly you become!

I am proud being an Indian that I am not afraid of the government. I have rights, a court system and thriving media. And regarding Indian movies, are you aware there are more movies made in India than rest of the world combined!

You boost about your per-capita, but did you forget you are only child of your parent. Why is that? Your govt decided that. in my country, the govt will get flipped over if it dares to do so.

Now some more hard facts for you, India's total population was 440 million+ in 1947 and now we have 1.2 billion of which about 25% are poor i.e. 300 million. That is inspite of adding 760 million in population, only 300 million are poor.

In case of China, China had a population of 1.1 billion in 1947 and now it is 1.3 million with about 10% poor people. ie. 110 million people are poor out of 200 million million added.

So, it is quite obvious, why per capita has to go down, when there are more young population than older population in early stages.

...

Let's get one thing straight: cheap goods is not the end of the world; holding 800 billions may be 无可奈何, but you - trash the image of anyone associated with you.

I suggest you drop your 江北人:blah::blah: pronto ...

Atleast schChinese had some form of logic in his communication. You naturally lack it I presume.

Have the ability to defend your say! In the long post I have written, you were unable to counter any arguments. So, should I assume truth is tougher than fiction. Don't be Chinese, have the ability to talk! :)
