""Petroleum and Natural Resources Ministry has proposed raising gas tariff by up to 100 percent.
Talking to reporters Wednesday, Minister for Petroleum and Natural Resources Dr Asim Hussain said the gas tariff for industrial and fertilizer sectors would be raised by 15 to 20 percent and 100 percent respectively from July 1. He said that a gaslaod management plan was being prepared in consultation with all stakeholders to effectively tackle gas shortage especially during winter season.
He said the KESC had demanded 239 mmfd gas while it would be provided 200 mmfd as part efforts to overcome gas shortages.
The Minister was of the opinion that gas supply should be cut by 50 percent to Independent Power Producers (IPPs) and they should run on diesel.
Regarding petrol shortage, he said the government was taking concrete steps to ensure adequate supply of fuel across the country and as many as 200,000 tonnes of petrol had been imported, which would help overcome fuel shortage.
Moreover, he said that licenses of six oil marketing companies had been suspended for not retaining required POL stocks.
Replying to a question, he said suspension of licence would not create further fuel shortage as these companies were too small to affect the situation.
Answering another question, the minister said that SSGC and SNGPL had recovered Rs 3 billion last month.
He suggested that SSGC and SNGPL needed to form own LPG marketing companies to maintain prices of the gas across the country. ""
