SAN FRANCISCO – Federal authorities say fighter jets were scrambled to intercept a small plane that had lost contact with traffic controllers over California.
Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Mike Fergus says the Cessna 172 was flying from Santa Monica to Oakland on Sunday morning when it lost radio contact with air traffic controllers somewhere near Ventura.
It wasn't until the plane had reached the Monterey area, around 11:35 a.m., when traffic controllers were able to contact the pilot.
The plane landed without incident at Oakland International Airport.
Fergus wasn't sure if the jets, which had been scrambled from a base near Fresno had actually intercepted the Cessna, or if they had turned back once radio contact was established.
