KARACHI:

Exhibitors in Pakistan will lift the self-imposed ban on the screening of Indian films today (Tuesday), owner of a leading cinema told The Express Tribune on the condition of anonymity.

Termed merely a ‘suspension’ and not a ban, since there was no government intervention, exhibitors had decided on their own to stop the screening of Indian films, following Indian Motion Pictures Producers’ Association (IMPPA) ban on Pakistani artists and technicians working in India earlier in October.

The decision to resume the screening of Indian films comes in the wake of Indian Army’s criticism of the MNS’ penalty of INR-50 million on Indian films featuring Pakistani actors.

Following the losses cinema owners faced post-Ashura coupled with the explosive situation between the two countries, exhibitors had gathered thrice since the suspension of Indian films to ponder over the possible consequences.

In the latest meeting, which took place on Sunday, followed by a brief discussion on Monday, all exhibitors agreed to resume the screening, effective from Tuesday.

“Indian Army’s statement is a good enough evidence for the change in perspective on the other side of the border. So is the release of Fawad Khan’s film in India,” said another cinema owner who attended the meeting.

Zuraiz Lashari, the chairman of Pakistan’s exhibitors association, will make a formal announcement in Lahore on Tuesday. Owner of a leading distribution company told The Express Tribune that the resumption of Indian films had to happen since cinemas relied heavily on Bollywood movies for their revenue.

In a related development, both Ae Dil Hai Mushkil and Ajay Devgn’s Shivay have been issued NoCs by the ministry of commerce and Shivay is set to be previewed by the censor boards.

“The govt has issued the NoC for Shivay. We are set to screen or tomorrow for certification,” the secretary of Sindh Board of Film Censors, Razzaq Khuhwar said.

“We will accept and preview Indian films, if and when they are submitted for certification,” Mobashir Hasan, the chairman of the Central Board of Film Certification said. (With Addition input by Rahul Aijaz in Karachi)

Told you this self imposed ban by patriotic cinemas was temporary. 90% of bollywood boxoffice is generated by 6-7 movies a year. Back then no big movie was around the corner but now there it is.

Now its up to Pakistan government to step in.

Lol... We just can't live without each other!!
We are permanent neighbor, It's our choice, we fight everyday or live with Peace.
I blame politicians on both sides, for not resolving issues through table talk. While, we have pro india Prime Minister which is perfect opportunity for dialogue and to all resolve issues. No wonder, we are asking for dialogue, dialogue everyday. This is best opportunity for India , instead of political scoring just for coming election, Let sit on table. And discuss all issues.
War only brings destruction, having both sides as nuclear armed, both countries have big responsibility for peace & for safety of civilians . Everyday border clashes, This madness need to end.
We should also avoid to support Kashmiris people, This is their fight, no need to poke nose there. Need to resolve Kashmir issues, let them leave as it is. Our pashtun brothers invaded there and we already got 1/3rd part of Land, While india got 2/3rd of land, that is reasonable according to population.
Forget political scoring, Settle the issue once for all.
Live with Peace :)

It's not so simple.

The status quo suits those in power.

Indian politicians need Kashmir to divert attention of the masses from problems like corruption and poverty.

Pakistani politicians need Kashmir to divert attention from same problems.

Pakistani army needs Kashmir to avoid peace to hold on to it's relevance.

Indian government doesn't know what to do with million plus army so Kashmir is best to occupy army's mind instead of Delhi.

Kashmir state government (in Indian side) doesn't want peace or Indian army to leave, as right now the army provides a parallel government with extortion income that state politicians get a commission out of.

Kashmiri state government (in Pakistani side) is too weak democratically to even have any say in the matter.

So in spite of 90% of the general population in both countries wishing for peace, Kashmir will never be resolved and peace will never be attained.

Only public pressure can force exhibitors to permanently ban Bollywood movies in Pakistan. Their lust for money must not trump national pride.
