Eshchi Urges Ghani To Put Pressure On Dostum

Eshchi said he is happy with the AGO’s investigation, but stressed the issue can only be resolved through legal channels.

Ahmad Eshchi, former governor of Jawzjan province who accused First Vice President General Abdul Rashid Dostum of ordering a sexual assault against him, on Saturday urged President Ashraf Ghani to put pressure on Dostum to respond to the Attorney General’s Office (AGO) which has twice summoned him to appear regarding the investigation.

Eshchi says he is happy with the AGO’s investigation, but stressed the issue can only be resolved through legal channels.

“As now Dostum has come to Kabul, I urge the president to put him under pressure to go to the AGO and respond about the allegations against him,” he said.

Dostum reportedly returned to Kabul on Thursday but has still not presented himself to the AGO as requested.

The AGO however has not commented on the progress in the case but says the accusations made against Dostum will be investigated transparently.

“The team appointed by the AGO will investigate the Dostum-Eshchi issue transparently. Results will be shared with the public after the investigation is completed,” Jamshid Rasuli, AGO spokesman said.

Sources have told TOLOnews that Dostum discussed the matter with his aides on Saturday afternoon. However, the Junbish-e-Milli party spokesman refused to comment.

“No one will obey the law if government does not implement it on everyone – regardless of their position,” said Ainuddin Bahaduri, secretary general of Afghanistan's Lawyers Union.

Eshchi earlier said if the issue is not investigated properly, he will call on the International Criminal Court to investigate the case.
