Energy imports, net (% of energy use) | Data | Graph - World Bank
Chart from the World Bank website:
It's interesting to note that China's energy imports are only 10% of our overall energy usage. Which is by far the lowest among the other countries in the chart.
Apart from coal, gas and renewable energy, we also produce a lot of oil domestically (the 5th largest producer of oil in the world).
So it's not TOO far fetched to think that China might return to being an energy exporter one day (like we were a few decades ago), especially once our Shale boom gets into full swing. Especially considering that we have the number 1 largest reserves of Shale gas in the world.
Also interesting to note that America is producing more of their own oil (Shale) and importing less.
