Calling America's ties with Pakistan a "sick relationship'' that "is becoming dangerously diseased,'' noted US columnist and author Christopher Hitchens says the US should recognize India as its "long-term ally in Asia.''

Writing in the Canadian daily Calgary Herald Wednesday, the author of best-selling "God is not Great'' hit out at Pakistan's duplicity in its war on the Taliban and al-Qaeda.

He said, "The United States made Pakistan a top-priority Cold War ally. It overlooked the regular interventions of its military into politics. It paid a lot of bills and didn't ask too many questions.

"It (the US) generally favoured Pakistan over India, which was regarded as dangerously 'neutralist' in those days, and during the Bangladesh war, it closed its eyes to a genocide against the Muslim population of East Bengal.

"During the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan, Washington fed the Pakistani military and intelligence services from an overflowing teat and allowed them to acquire nuclear weapons on the side.''

Despite all the preferential treatment it received from the US all these years, he asked: why the Pakistani elite hates the US.

"It hates it (the US) because it is dependent on it and is still being bought by it. It is a dislike that is also a form of self-hatred of the sort that often develops between client states and their paymasters. (You can often sense the same resentment in the Egyptian establishment, and sometimes among Israeli rightwingers, as well),'' Hitchens wrote.

"By way of overcompensation for their abject status as recipients of the American dole, such groups often make a big deal of flourishing their few remaining rags of pride. The safest outlet for this in the Pakistani case is an official culture that makes pious noises about Islamic solidarity while keeping the other hand extended for the next subsidy.

"Pakistani military officers now strike attitudes in public as if they were defending their national independence rather than trying to prolong their rule as a caste and to extend it across the border of their luckless Afghan neighbour,'' said Hitchens who is a columnist for Vogue and Slate.

Calling it a sick relationship which is becoming "dangerously'' diseased, he it is not possible to "found a working, trusting, fighting alliance on such a basis.

"Under communism, the factory workers of Eastern Europe had a joke: 'We pretend to work, and they pretend to pay us.' The Pakistanis don't even pretend that their main military thrust is directed against the common foe, but we do continue to pay them. If we only knew it, the true humiliation and indignity is ours, not theirs.''

This relationship will only "get nastier, more corrupt and degrading until we recognize that our long-term ally in Asia is India,'' he said.

"India,'' Hitchens said, "is not a country sizzling with self-pity and self-loathing, because it was never one of our colonies or clients. We don't have to send New Delhi 15 different envoys a month, partly to placate and partly to hector, because the relationship with India isn't based on hysteria and envy.

"Alas, though, we send hardly any envoys at all to the world's largest secular and multicultural democracy, and the country itself gets mentioned only as an afterthought. Nothing will change until this changes.''

Hitchens said the Pakistani army is "coddling'' the Taliban in Afghanistan because they have been told that the US will not be deploying there in strength for very much longer.

"Who can blame them (the Pakistani army) for basing their plans on this supposition and continuing to dig in for a war with India that we are helping them to prepare for?" the US columnist asked.

Why does Pakistan hate the United States? - By Christopher Hitchens - Slate Magazine

This piece of opinion is full of ambiguities and the above quotation illustrates this perfectly. First of all, it's not the elite that hates the US. The elite have actually sucked up to the US. Secondly, the Pakistani masses disagree with US foreign policy which is dubious and full of double standards. Does that imply that Pakistanis actually hate the US? The columnist is obviously angry, hateful and confused.

Don't need to go far...

If you read the comments by some Pakistani posters...here on this forum...you will have a fair Idea about Pakistan's hatred towards US...on one hand Pakistni posters rejoice US handing over F16s to Pakistan....and on the other hand they shout anti US slogans...

Wouldn't you shout anti-US slogans if your country was to be violated by drone attacks time and time again? Wouldn't you shout anti-US slogans when many innocent people and perhaps family died as a consequence of these drone attacks? Wouldn't you shout anti-US slogans when soldiers in your country were sacrificing their lives each day and a superpower threatened to do more? Wouldn't you shout anti-US slogans when your adversary is being showered with nuke tech and other toys whilst you're making the sacrifices? Wouldn't you despise the US for leaving your country high and dry after the Cold War? Wouldn't you be angry at the very least to have to deal with the aftermath as a consequence? That isn't hate, but exposing double standards. Differentiate between the two.

As "illuminatus" mentioned that Pakistan public doesn't agree with American Government Polices. Pakistani don't hate America or American People.
Christopher Hitchens obviously snorted some dry-crushed cow urine before writing this article.

Well ask your leadership....and your Army...why the hell are they cooperating with America...on their Anti Pakistan Agenda....

American government policies are simple...Protect American Interest anywhere on the face of this earth.....but can you say the same for Pakistan Government and Pakistan Army......

That meaningless rant at the end was pointless...just highlights your frustration..and your incapabilities.

Not at the expense of others interests though. People are resisting US demands (equals to US interest) because they know that at the end of the day it will be a one way street like during the Cold War. Do you blame them for that? That's not hatred, but placing question marks at dubious policies.

Fyki, we rejoice US as we have paid for the F-16s, it didn't come as charity and we shout anti US slogans because the so called WoT (US created mess) have been deliberately shifted to Pakistan.

Every country has to watch out for its interest ...while in a relationship....so its is Pakistan's loss...and Pakistan's incompetence that they have not been able to utilize their relationship with US......while other countries have been doing so successfully....

If you always want to receive in a relationship...that relationship is always going to become a one way street... Its Pakistans responsibility to make sure that they convert their relationship with America into a two way street.... You just can't get help from America....you will have to show them what you can do for them when they need you.......

Its a fair exchange...

I understand your point., BUT if you are so angry., and u believe US betrayed you., then why asking for more aid and military hardware, why dont you say..."guy's party is over and get the hell out" you cant say this...a

when GOP was under tremendous money problem., it was US, which helped and still giving lot of money (i am talking about welfare money..not WoT or army related)., as long as you are receiving those money, you cant complain them....

fair exchange? what are you talking about? what has this war on terror brought us since US entrance in afghanistan? 10 thousand civilian casualties of our brothers, sisters and mothers and even more army casualties in the name of war on terror in exchange of some billions of dollars? even a single life is priceless even if you give us trillions of dollars.. our economy completely dismantled, we are forced to go for IMF, but that is the US strategy. it buys the most currupt and coward leader of muslim countries and starts its genocide in the name of a false accusation. what better example there is than iraq and afghanistan? and now Pakistan is its main target.. and then you ask us why we hate US?

Ofcourse..Pak army is doing ..."protecting its national and its own interests" remember Afghanistan., who supported and kept the Taliban regime there???, even though., the whole world is not recognized taliban., Pak., happily supported because it gains from that deal., its what called protecting and acting on their own interest., look what taliban manage to do the Afghanistan., after decade of its rule in Afghanistan., do u see any development, education, agriculture...nothing., but still Pak supported this regime... because., they are much more suitable for Pak.,... same goes for every country..be it US, china or India., so dont think PaK is innocent victim., it has ..its own share of blame to share in this mess

Don't be emotional here..International relations are not based on emotions...its about what can two countries do for each other....US can offer money....what can Pakistan offer to US........

Well haven't Pakistan enjoyed the money given by US as aid....in Billlions....Pakistan can only refuse to US ..if Pakistan refuses to accept Aid from US......but thats highly unlikely....

Pakistan is in this situation because of the shortsightedness of Pakistani leadership...that does not allow them to look beyond Eastern Border.....Practically each and everything was focussed towards that.....nothing else....so now you find yourself on a sticky ground .......

People can buy you only if you are willing to sell yourself....so why blame anyone for buying your leadership.....even your top brass army is ready for sale...depending on the price that is on offer.

thats the problem. our country is still being run by a single sick head. when kerry lugar bill (US 1.5 bullion aid package) was brought in parliament, the whole nation and parliament rose up against it and said that we will eat grass and die of hunger but wont accept this kerry ***** from US to feed our stomach..but our most corrupt president (who unfortunately has the powers) accepted this bill to fill his own account. even 10% of this amount wont go for the people anyway. as i said earlier, that is the US strategy. it buys the corrupt leaders of different countries and black mails the people of that nation through that leader by putting disgraceful conditions

Fair question., but you should ask it...on YOUR ARMY (who first allowed US into this)...and then corrupt politicians... aren't you guys elected them...by democractic elections???? then why blame US., try to bring people movement ..and bring good leaders., strong and talented..but rather., you guys vent your anger on US (again i am not saying US is angel..but merely...Pak is responsible for their own future....dont blame on others)
