The U.S. government has agreed to sell a 5000 km range early warning radar to Qatar. The news was announced by U.S. Defence Secretary Ashton Carter on Dec. 10 during his visit to Bahrein.

"We reached an agreement for Qatar to purchase a 5,000 km [range] early warning radar to enhance its missile defences," Carter said.

It was announced in July 2013 that Qatar had requested a Raytheon AN/FPS-132 Block 5 long-range early warning radar at an estimated cost of USD1.1 billion

The United States Defence Secretary has announced that an agreement has been reached to allow Qatar to purchase a long range early warning radar (EWR) from Raytheon last week.

Secretary Ashton Carter told an audience at the International Institute of Strategic Studies (IISS) regional security conference in Manama, Bahrain, that the two sides had reached a deal for Qatar to purchase a 5,000km range EWR to enhance its missile defences.

‘Qatar is another Gulf country where our partnership has accelerated over the last several years. It hosts our Combined Air Operations Centre, which is critical to managing the coalition air campaigns over Iraq, Syria, and Afghanistan and our militaries are increasingly interoperable in air, land, and ballistic missile defence,’ he added.

In July 2013 Qatar announced its intent to purchase the A/N FPS-132 Block 5 EWR and associated equipment, parts, training and logistical support for an estimated cost of $1.1 billion.

The principal contractor, Raytheon, describe the AN/FPS-132 system as designed to detect missile launches that take place thousands of miles away to provide advanced warning time to alert command and control centres and cue fire control systems.

‘This highly reliable radar requires very low manning, yet will operate 365 days a year, 24 hours a day, providing up to 360 degrees of coverage out to 5,000km,’ said Steve Sparagna, chief engineer for the AN/FPS-132 EWR. ‘It is the ideal sensor to deter and detect hostile missile launches.’

According to Michael Elleman, a senior fellow for missile defence with IISS, the system in future can provide not only Qatar but a unified GCC ballistic missile defence system an early warning capability against any Iranian ballistic missile launches.

Qatar currently has requested in 2012 Qatar 11 Patriot PAC-3 launchers and 246 Patriot MIM-104E guidance enhanced missiles in addition to a 2014 order of 12 THAAD launchers, 150 THAAD missiles, two THAAD fire control and communications units and two AN/TPY-2 THAAD radars to complement the EWR.

Qatari long-range radar procurement moves forward

Qatar and the United States have reached an agreement on the former's acquisition of a long-range early warning radar, Defence Secretary Ashton Carton announced in Bahrain on 10 December.

"Just this week, we reached an agreement for Qatar to purchase a 5,000 km [range] early warning radar to enhance its missile defences," Carter said when listing examples of US military co-operation with various Middle East states.

Carter said the plan is for Qatar's radar to be integrated into a regional air defence network that would mitigate the threat from Iranian ballistic missiles.

"The progress we've made in improving ballistic missile defence is also important as Iran continues to test and field such missiles in defiance of the UN Security Council," he said. "That's why we are working together to develop a blueprint for a regional ballistic missile defence architecture that would help integrate capabilities across the region, from the Patriot batteries deployed in several countries, to the Terminal High-Altitude Air Defense [THAAD] system in the [United Arab Emirates] UAE, to Qatar's future early warning radar, and to more systems yet to come."

It was announced in July 2013 that Qatar had requested a Raytheon AN/FPS-132 Block 5 long-range early warning radar at an estimated cost of USD1.1 billion.

Raytheon was awarded a USD2.4 billion contract in December 2014 to build Qatar an Air and Missile Defence Operations Centre (ADOC) that it said will "integrate US air defence systems - including Patriot, the Early Warning Radar, and THAAD - with European air defence systems and radars, and Qatar's Air Operation Centre".

The US Department of Defense announced in December 2014 that it had awarded a USD2.4 billion contract to deliver 10 Patriot fire units to Qatar, with an expected completion date by 30 April 2019.

Lockheed Martin had been awarded contracts to produce PAC-3 missiles for Qatar's Patriot systems, but has not as yet received a contract for the THAAD systems that Doha is expected to order.

this seems like a pretty big deal. covers all the Persian gulf and well into Iranian territory, but seems like a easy target for ballistic missiles and cruise missiles. Qatar will need a missile system to shoot these threats down once detected.

They have Patriot 3, there are around 30 batteries in GCC and THAAD is coming to UAE, they work as a team..

I'm just carious why they need a system that coves such a vast area. They could have easily gone for a system that is more mobile and stays within their defense umbrella . Also the operating cost for such an expensive system has to be pretty significant. I understand that they can afford it but to me it seems like this system is overkill

Well , Usrael has long range radars of 1000 km covering a big Area including the GCC, Iran has the long range radar Nibu with 3000 km coverage, so this is no surprise in the Area....

A 5000 km range is significant. Excellent for the GCC and its defensive capabilities.

BREAKING: Raytheon awarded contract to provide the State of Qatar with Early Warning Radar system: http://rtn.co/2l8OW24

3:24 AM - 25 Feb 2017

Qatar first put in a request to purchase the radar system in 2013. The contract has since been awaiting lawmaker approval.

Regional stability
At the time, the order package included an A/N FPS-132 Block 5 Early Warning Radar. Additional parts and equipment, training and technical support were also part of the deal.

The system is capable of detecting “sea-launched or intercontinental ballistic missiles” at a range of up to 3,000 miles (4,828 km) and is capable of tracking them in real time, US Defense documents show.

When notifying Congress about the contract, the United States Defense Security Cooperation Agency said that the sale would “promote regional stability by enhancing regional defense to a key U.S. ally.”

It continued:

“The acquisition of this air defense system would provide a permanent defensive capability to the Qatar Peninsula as well as protection of the economic infrastructure and well-being of Qatar.”

Defense
Qatar has spent billions of dollars shoring up its defenses in the past few years amid growing regional instability.

In December, it placed a $29.5 million order with US firm Lockheed Martin for an unspecified number of Patriot Advanced Capability-3 (PAC3) missiles and PAC-3 MSE interceptors.

And last fall, the government signed a deal to install a defense system along its coast to help stop hostile ships from entering its waters.

Qatar is also investing in new aircraft as it expands its air defense capability. For example, US lawmakers recently approved Qatar’s purchase of 36 F-15 fighter jets from Boeing.

pakistani missiles are in range of being detected.
note this radar is linked to nato and American early warning systems.

Either I missed on you this or couldn't get you but I am sure, we are not firing our Missiles to Qatar at all. Would you like to explain in detail? :-)

:woot: or it was if we fire towards anywhere, will be detected by this system?

its not about firing it at qatar or anyone. its about about knowing its flight pattern.

TBH, yet I am unaware if it is going to be like this though almost 3000 Miles is a huge range though our planners would have something in mind. How do you analyse it?

cant do nothing but sit with your tail between your legs. arabs dont care about opinions and honestly never needed it. wont be suprised if its aimed at pakistan then iran really.

Well Qatar will not be the only one with It.. few others will follow around GCC

Geniuses like you should stick to watching cartoons on TV instead of writing nonsense left and right. This radar is not aimed at anyone in particular but part of the defence capabilities of the entire GCC region. Seems very difficult to understand for some.
