Dassault Aviation of France is offering the Indian Navy (IN) its Rafale M carrier-borne fighter to operate off the Indigenous Aircraft Carrier-II (IAC-II) it plans to build from 2020-21.

In a presentation to the IN in New Delhi on 29 January, Dassault executives stressed the benefits of operating twin-engine Rafale Ms alongside the 36 Rafale Cs the Indian Air Force (IAF) is in advanced negotiations to acquire in flyaway condition. They emphasised that the ‘commonality factor’ in deploying Rafale Ms would operationally benefit the IN in sourcing spares and accessing the IAF’s maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) facilities for the French fighters, industry sources have told IHS Jane’s .

India signed a memorandum of understating (MoU) with France for the 36 Rafale Cs during French president François Hollande’s visit to Delhi in late January, with officials saying a more binding inter-governmental agreement (IGA) on the procurement was imminent.

Dassault is believed to have agreed to set up two MRO facilities for the IAF’s Rafales.

In around 2001-02 the IN opted for 45 single- and dual-seat Russian Mikoyan MiG-29K/KUB fighters for two of its two aircraft carriers for about USD2.8 billion, primarily because the IAF had been operating MiG-29s since 1985. It reasoned that this would provide the MiG 29Ks – deliveries of which will be completed by 2017 – with easy access to spares and MRO support from a wider user base.

The IN’s selection at the time had also revived Mikoyan’s flagging MiG-29 naval variant programme by ensuring that the aircraft carriers INSVikramaditya (ex-Admiral Gorshkov ) and INS Vikrant , which is scheduled to join IN service in late 2018, embarked only these fighters.

The IN is currently conceptualising IAC-II (likely to be called INS Vishal ), especially the complement of 50-55 fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft it will carry, before starting to build it around 2020-21 and commissioning it a decade later.

By 2030, Rafale will be near obsolete.
That is far from true. Many of its features today are cutting edge (sensor fusion, EW systems, radar, weapons etc) and trump those found even in 5th gen birds like the F-22. With continuous devlopment (F4+) the Rafale can continue to remain deadly.

The rest of the world also includes Europe, South America,Nato and Russia .
India has two 5th gen projects running and other than the F-22, none of the other 5th gen projects running right now are all that impressive- the F-35 is highly flawed and still a long way away from entereing service and the Chinese J-XXs well, the less said about them the better. You don't go from making the JF-17/J-10 and ripping off others' IPRs to making a world-beating 5th gen machine in the span of 10 years. China is still 15-20 years behind the West in many areas- they can't even make an AL-31P equivalent, forget about the very latest engines that feature higher thrust, TVC and Supercruise.

Well I know it, that's why I didn't mentioned China , but as we talk they have their ( not only China)5th gen aircrafts flying or in building. At least they have went ahead than the initial design phase.

But as i said, why worry about Rafale getting obsolete when we are thinking to fly 3rd gen aircrafts in an era when 4th gen are being retired.

Also talking frankly, the status of, AMCA is not better than plans of Dassault for the unmanned successor to Rafale.

Heck , forget about AMCA, where is MK1A?

We will keep flying Migs 10 year down the line and keep talking about our " PLANS ".

Only partly true, a lot of orders are coming in now for 4.5++ gen fighters.

AMCA has been funded by this GoI and work is on.

All MiG-21/27 will be gone one way or another by 2023/4, whether the IAF has replacments for them in service by them is the real issue.

23?
I wish someone on our side had some spine.

Not true.

The Rafale is a platform that will be constantly upgraded with the best available,a new version of it could see the light near the 2025s. So saying Rafale will be near obsolete by 2030 is false.

Here's some of the last improvments to the Rafale in the last version of it,the F3.R.

The new F3R standard Rafale will include a new-generation laser targeting pod and major software changes. The upgrades will complement the enhanced Thales RBE2 active electronically-scanned array (AESA) radar which will allow the aircraft to deploy the MBDA Meteor Beyond Visual Range Air-to-Air Missile (BVRAAM), along with improvements to the aircraft’s Thales SPECTRA self-defence system and Mode-5/Mode-S-compatible Identification Friend or Foe interrogator/transponder.

Can you give me the name of even 1 country In South America who at present has better fighter jets in its inventory then Indian Navy....

Did I say so?
My point was w.r.t 50% of our present fleet. (Our 3Rd gen fleet )
Do read the conversation and the point on which the comment was made.

By the way Chile does have a better inventory.

In current configurations Rafale M may not be the best choice available in the market, in fact the best is to upgrade Mig-29K to the Mig-35 level and buy them in large numbers.

Not going to happen.Mig 29K is the best choice for Naval aviation and judging by history of IN naval aviation they will surely go for a VTOL which is F 35 as a successor of Harrier.we've earned an valuable experience of operationg a VTOL aircraft from a AC.

Even the current Mig 29K is a true air superiority fighter which outclass F 16 blk 52.

With powerful radar, low RCS and long range BVR 90 - 120 km R 27 and R 77/RRV AE it can even shot down a su 30mki and J 11 (minus the jammers).
